If so I wont wast anymore of your time getting settled in. Where can I get info and how to get started online and how it works? Thanks to anyone who can help

First things first-

Let's get you playing the game.

What is the problem with the joystick exactly? What type is it? USB connection? New drivers? What's your Operating system?

Do not worry about "wasting" anyone's time with questions

well its a usb joystick. All the other sims I've played thus far, the throttle just worked automatically. I installed IL2 2 days ago and have been trying to get the feel of it but this whole throttle with the keyboard just wont do. I've tried to change it in the Input menu, but it doesnt seem to reconize joystick movements for key inputs.

What model joystick is it? Have you tried to use the "HOTAS" throttle as your throttle? Go all the way down the command list and it's at the very bottom. Try to map your throttle to the HOTAS throttle input and see if that works.

I'll give that a try, I appreciate your help. I got the Saitek Cyborg EVO joystick. Would you recommend joining a squad or going in solo to get introduced to the online play?

Welcome! We like newbies around here. Its great to see new people finding out about this great sim.

To set up your joystick:

1) Go into the controls menu to set up your joystick or change any of the keyboard commands. HOTAS functions (throttle and other joystick functions) are at the very bottom of the control screen.

2) set your throttle to zero.

3) click on the area to the right of the word throttle, under the words for the the other joystick inputs, like "joystick X" or whatever. (sorry, don't remember exactly what it says and I am at work so can't look it up).

4) Once the box opens up, move your throttle from zero to maximum.

5) Apply or Save settings or whatever it says. Your done.

To assign any axis or key to a function, start the game and go into "Controls".
Click right of the command you wish to re-define, then press the key/button you want that command to be assigned to...

At the bottom you will find the HOTAS section... here you can define throttle/sliders... To do so, just click at the right again, then move the slider to "increase" said command (throttle, flaps etc).

I find it usefull to start a Quick mission - then press Esc and go into the Controls... that way you can define, then return to game and check if its allright http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Also you can define a "profile" for your joystick main axis under "Hardware" then "Input"... use the sliders to get more/less reaction from the joystick (remember there are several axis there in the drop down box). Make sure the red and green dots to the left (where you can see the joystick response) overlap on Zero and Max (first / last slider)...

To start online, run Setup.exe in main FB folder, Under the "Network" tab set IP to NOT be the "Default", but one of the numbers there (at least one should work).
If you have a dynamic IP - do this everytime you log onto the Internet...
If there are no numbers there it should work...
Also make sure that port 21000 is enabled - select skin d/l OFF...
Also make sure your fire-wall is letting port 21000 through - if you use window's firewall turn it off and get www.kerio.com (http://www.kerio.com) or another free one...

Then join UBI online to test (Play Online at UBI link)...

Goto FB then Dogfight or Cooperative rooms http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif - the ACE links...

If you are behind a router you CAN'T HOST http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif on UBI... It's a UBI quirck and they still haven't solved it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif(((
