Since escorts are rare and fighters able to hang around the slow ship through a mission even rarer, I try to suggest to the il-2 pilots on the server to stick together and protect eachother (and when it happens they often do a good job) ( when it dont work reds go blue fighter too).

With an altitude of 2000m even a heavy twoseater is capable of some dogfighting, but low on the deck u just havent energy to do anything but wait and hope for the best.

Once in a group of 4 doubleseater il-2's and one yak7, we shot down 6 of the 14 FW190 and 109's hovering above the target area. The kills were made by the il-2's but the yak7 did a good job distracting the enemy and could have gotten some kills aswell, A few times we shot a foe from his tail.
I had to bail but I got 2 fw190. The yak7 and 2 of the il-2's made it back wich is quite unusual with such opposition.( we could only do it because we had some altitude IMO )
Had the il-2's gone by them selves on the deck they had been easy pickings at the target area.

Even two il-2's can function well, going after eachothers chasers.
If Il-2's stayd in groups like the opposing fighters often do it surely would become interesting.

Lol, yeah.. You can really surprise those FW190 and BF109 pilots if you can fool them into TnBing with your IL2s at low altitude... Your wing can take the punishment while you sneak up behind with those powerful cannons... I've gotten more than a few kills on unsuspecting fighters in an IL2..

Hey is it just me, or does it seem that every time more planes are added on, they have less and less detail in the damage and flight characteristics modelling? I don't mean to complain or anything, but take my picture of the IL2 above... I dont think it's possible to put that many visible holes in any other plane in the game.. And take some of the latest additions, such as the jets, for example... You could be riddled with bullets but still "appear" fine on the outside... This is part of the reason why I like to fly the IL-2 so much.. It feels "complete".. Its fun to see how much damage I can take and still land the thing..

Hi Macel....

I have tested "actual" and "visual" damage
on all flyable planes quite thoroughly, and yes there are a few planes with less detailed skin-damage.
On most planes the skindamage is quite detailed but u can still shot down a plane with little or no skindamage......This relation is in my opinion a bit unfortunate even for the developers because many complain about that weapons dont do enough damage or that some planes can take to many hits...wich from my perspective is incorrect.

The actual damage to engine and other internal damage is very detailed , but it dont always look like that since it may not show on the skin.
The other problem is "edge-hits" where a cannonround hits the edge of a wing, elevator or rudder causing the explosion go of outside the plane with no hits on vital parts.
I wrote a post about this and my own tests in olegs readyroom recently.
