Found a funny GG track where I shoot at a Yak1 with bf109g2 and recorded at least 25 hits on the yak and it refused to go down until the engine stopped from fuelstarvation.

I think I hit with the 20mm cannon atleast 4 times and ran out of those and then had only the peashooters left (21 hits...hehe)

I stopped shooting as soon as the wheels came out and watched him crashland at the edge of an airfield. I noted another "live" one.

Wonder what the pilot thought being hit so many times without going down.

The damage dont look to serious....here is a pic.

Guess none of the bullets hit any vital parts...

Mind you, I have managed to land with my plane shot up much worse than that... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Yak can be pretty tough. Also was this on AEP? MG151/20 is missing its right hook at the moment.

Peashooters do almost nothing http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Based on a book "Triumph and Tragedy", written by Soviet and Czech author I read, Yakovlev fighters were very fragile and dangerous to own pilots.. having weak construction and lacking pilot protection. The mortality of Soviet pilots was the highest in obsolete I-16s and Hurricanes, closely followed by Yakovlev fighters. Only way later there were P40s, LaGGs, Las and P-39s. Smetimes it happened that single 20mm cannon round disintegrated the plane in midair. After the water cooler was penetrated, the cabin filled with hot steam, causing its pilots to call Yaks "samovars" (samovar= self-cooker, typical Russian pot for preparing tea) and the VK-105PF engine was nicknamed "Pylyauchiy Fakel" what means smoking/burning torch due to its poor quality and often oil leaks and malfunctions.
Any experienced pilot having seen the pic of the Yak aftr som many hits would smile. Few hits should change the plane to burning torch. If you compare the vulnerability of let´s say P-39 to Yak, P-39 readily catches fire after few 20mm hits, despite Soviet pilots were very happy changing Yaks for P-39, since they "felt safe in that plane" (quoted from Soviet P-39 ace interview). Yaks DM is the most unrealistic one in FB. Did you also notice, how many hits the VK-105P engine can bear without any sign of damage from the rear bomber gunner without any effect? Compare it with Allison/Merlin/Packard/Daimler-Benz. I reported it lately to 1C with plenty of screenshots made in arcade mode.

Another fun thing in this fight was that it took a while.
Sometimes the yakpilot tried to outstall my 109 , but I saw it coming and hung on his tail. a few times the speed was only 150-110 km/h on top of maneuvers.
I thought of disengaging him, but he had turn on me the first time I did that, and to have a stubborn yak spraying on your tailfeathers isnt healthy, so I just keept going after him waiting for a better moment to get out.

Well this was before aep and perhaps they have fixed the damage model on the yaks now? I hit the wings several times without any visible damage...so those tiny holes was the result of that.

And I collect these kinds of tracks where my opponent survives by landing, bellylanding or crashlanding. I call them "lives" instead of "kills". Watching them always make me feel good.

If I see the wheels come out I stop shooting, but a few times they have tricked me tried to continue the fight...then ofcourse I have popped them.
