View Full Version : TELO Climb Jackpot Challenge - August 29th (Play DoC, Discuss, and Win Seals!)

08-28-2013, 09:18 PM

What is The Jackpot Challenge?

Competing in the Road to Paris (http://road2paris.com/) tournament and want to experiment, but don't want it to count against your score? We're now hosting weekly tournaments for some competitive gaming outside of Road to Paris (http://road2paris.com/) to experiment, have fun, and WIN! The Jackpot Challenge is a weekly event that encourages players to experiment with new decks/heroes and discuss the possible strategies they create.

Your goal is to place as high as you can in the Jackpot tournament using your own version of our Deck of the Week. We highly encourage you to stream your experimenting using our new integrated Twitch.TV SDK feature! Additionally, share your results here in this thread. Did you find an awesome combination of cards that helped you place in Tier 1? Let us know!

Since this challenge is played entirely in the Jackpot tournament, this will not hurt your chances of qualifying for Road to Paris (http://road2paris.com/)! Our August online qualifier only has a few days left but you still have time to sign up! Make sure to sign up for that here as well: http://road2paris.com/register/

Are there prizes to be won?

Of course! On top of the prizes already included in playing Jackpot, we will be awarding seals to players that participate here in the Jackpot Challenge. To become eligible for extra rewards, share your experiences with the Jackpot Challenge Deck of the Week here in this thread. Here are a few examples of ways to qualify:

Make an awesome play during one of your games? Explain how you were able to pull it off. The more detail the better!
Stream your Jackpot Challenge matches and post the replays here for us to see.
Theorycraft the Deck of the Week, come up with a sound strategy for victory, and share your results with us.

Our three favorite submissions based on decks, streams, or discussion will all earn prizes. The first place prize will be 200 Seals while the second and third place winners will both earn 100 seals each.

Will participating in The Jackpot Challenge hurt my chances of qualifying for Road to Paris?

Not at all! If anything, this could even help you out. You will be gaining practice and game knowledge by experimenting with new decks and card mixtures. Remember that jackpot tournament finishes are not counted towards your Road to Paris (http://road2paris.com/) online qualifier, so grind out some jackpot games and share your triumphs with the community!

Deck of the Week:

Our Deck of the Week will be using any hero that your heart desires. Your goal this week is to build a deck around obtaining the highest possible TELO and to climb as high as possible in our Jackpot tournament on Thursday, August 29th.

** The three players that post screenshots in this thread with the highest overall TELOs will win seals! **

Remember, post your experience, decks, and stream replays here in this thread for a chance to win seals! Because this Jackpot Challenge is slightly different, there will be more winners than normal. Players can still theorycraft their theoretical "highest TELO" decks for a chance to win. At least one extra entry will be selected to win seals. If enough people enter, this number will increase. Good luck and have fun!

You are an evil one, Jason.

Why thank you, trupiciel! I take that as a compliment :)

Hello, i currently have 267 Tournament-Elo and I wont try to go higher since I already feel kind of lucky I got so far :D I also got the archievement for 10 Jackpotwins a a row.

I used an aggressive version of "Rancords Seria".

My playstyle was pretty simple, I just went for the Hp of my enemy without caring to much about my own, I played against a lot of Maliks and i knew i had the far superior early game and can finish them easily with Shadowimage and Paos once i got him below ~~10 Hp, which wasnt really the problem with Dark Assasins, Sots, Bridges etc..Another card i want to mention is the Moonsilk-Skeleton, its a really nice early game card cause not many people bother dealing with it cause of the cripple and it can easily deal around 6 damage before i gets taken care of.

Good Job, need to try this deck at another time :)

307 telo with Phrias. The deck: http://www.mmdoc.net/show_deck/9709/

I started the jackpot with Jezziel reached 90 Telo highest, then switch to Kieran 180Telo Highest, Then Switch to Phrias.

08-29-2013, 11:17 PM
At first i played random Garant and Seria. After i failed i played Phrias.

My last Enemy was a Dhamiria Lock. I dealt some dmg at the beginning and then he Throned me and killed some Creatures. After that he played a Wasteland which i "minor"recalled". After that i played 2 Creatures. A Hellfire Imp and a Maniac. He played Stoneshiled which i dispelled. Then i buffed my Pao with Inner Fire and dealt dmg with the other two.. Thats how i reached 251 with my last game.

Oh and sry for my bad english :)

Today I played Ariana mill (max arround 120 t-elo with 9 wins and 5 loses) and then I played Dhamiria arbiter (max 268 t-elo with 8 wins and 2 loses).

With my arbiter deck I managed to win every game against the popular random Garant / Phrias deck but somehow lost against the strong Nergal slowpoke deck (did 1 huge mistake that cost me the game).

Here are the two decks :

- Ariana mill : http://www.mmdoc.net/show_deck/9712/
- Dhamiria arbiter : http://www.mmdoc.net/show_deck/9713/

For the Dhamiria arbiter deck one change can be made : +1 arbiter and -1 peddler; I tested both and I am still not sure which one is the best :)

I decided to participate in this one even though I have not yet made T1, mostly I am a T3 finisher with the occasional T2 finish. So here were my expectations & theory-crafting given that limited knowledge of over 200 telo play:
I expect to see a fairly large number of random Garant variants as that is a cheap/easy deck to build and has been successful recently.
I expect to see essentially a "band" of necro from about 100-200 telo. I do not expect to see a lot of Necro past 200, but as I said I don't have a lot of experience above 200 yet. If there is necro above 200 I would expect it to be Seria or some other necro with way to handle control/OTK decks.
I do, however, expect to see a good number of control/OTK decks above 200 telo.

I have no thrones so no control decks really possible for me to play.
I could play Garant myself, I have hit T2 with it in the past and stopped without trying for T1. I have struggled with this deck vs some of the Necro decks I expect to see at the mid-band. (Trees/high toughness/incorporeal creatures can cause the tempo to slow down too much.)
I could play Dhamiria creatures, but again it can struggle vs Necro with all the removal/puppet masters/etc.
I need to play a deck that does well vs the control/OTK decks which typically means some combination of Dhamiria's ability, early pressure, dispells, etc.

Given these constraints I decided to play Sandalphon. I think I probably have a better shot with Garant as I am missing a few cards with Sandalphon but Sandalphon is a new deck for me to try out, plus it should be less random...hopefully. :)
I can put on good early pressure with the deck which should help vs the high toughness Necro decks I expect to see.
I have removal which should help vs other rush decks.
I have SoTS for OTK decks plus some good early pressure.
I also have monsoon which should be useful in most games. Most of the control decks use earth magic to wipe the board and monsoon significantly reduces their effectiveness. Adar-Malik and Dhamiria make use of fire magic as removal, etc.
Here is the listing I went with: http://www.mmdoc.net/show_deck/9717/
I worried about the missing WC and geysers but figured what the heck. I basically copied it from cucu's posted listing with changes for my cards. I played against him a few jackpot's ago and loved what I saw in his deck. Any positive feedback is due him, any negative is due me. :)

My games went as follows:
1-Dhamiria W 1-0 30 telo. New player, lots of bad neutral creatures, huge deck, etc. nothing really to report.

2-Xorm W 2-0 60 telo. Close game, he got out an early ravager that I had no answer for. If he had a firebolt to nuke my sacrificial blockers for either of 2 turns I likely would have lost.

3-Kelthor L 2-1 29 telo. I just screwed up and did simple math wrong in my head...no excuse. :(

At this point I was bummed about a loss I shouldn't have had, especially this early, and still concerned about having "missing" cards. So after plenty of theory-crafting I scrapped it all and went random Garant on a whim. :)
Here is the Garant listing I went with: http://www.mmdoc.net/show_deck/9718/
Any credit for this deck is due to L4m4 and Rancord. I believe that L4m4 was the original creator and watching Rancord's stream definitely helped my decision making. (Highly recommend his stream...Rancord if you read this please stream more and hopefully at times conducive to my US time zone watching. :)) Changes were all a result, again, of my lack of some cards.

4-Sandalphon W 3-1 59 telo. I have no notes from this match, it was not really close though as I recall.

5-Xorm W 4-1 89 telo. Another rush deck, no spells just fortunes which let me stack my creatures up. Town portal + altar's brought the win home.

6-Sandalphon W 5-1 119 telo. This Sandal got several Holy Praetorians out early and things looked very bad for me. I managed to come back with a timely Forbidden Flame when he way over-extended and won in a close game.

At this point I had played the first 6 games on my lunch break so back to work I went. After getting home tonight I continued with some more games:

7-Ariana W 6-1 150 telo. This was a creature/spell Ariana 5/6/1 most likely. Lots of puppet masters and shadow images with one Spell Twister. Close win but I managed to slow him down enough to whittle him down. Amusingly enough (to me) I ran into a guy on the ladder last night playing a similar deck twice. I actually built it and fiddled with it some so I felt like I had a good understanding of how it worked.

8-Dhamiria W 7-1 178 telo. This was against Ssslock whose name I recognized from the top 16 list on the r2p standings. He was playing Dhamiria fatties and I drew an opening hand of garbage and mulliganed into a worse hand, Forbidden Flame and 2 Altars on the draw...great just great. That is a huge hit when he starts using his Hero power. I started off pretty fast and he ended up with, I believe it was 3 bloaters early, which I had to kill 2 with creatures, sacrificing what I felt were weaker creatures to save him from killing what I felt were stronger ones with Week of the Dead. In the end he got both my Altars with his Hero power and I got lucky getting his Forbidden Flame with a Chaos Lacerator death/discard. I believe this was the game that I won with Pao + Portal + Pao and a top decked Altar.

9-Sandalphon W 8-1 197 telo. I don't have any notes for this one but as I recall, at the end of the game I was holding enough for the win in my hand plus extra. I top decked something else as a win condition and when I won he bitterly called me lucky. I'll take a win any way I can get it, but it amuses me that this was probably the least lucky game I have played so far and it is the one I get accused of being lucky in.

10-Nergal W 9-1 223 telo. Creature based nergal not control or OTK. Also only my second Necro deck and well past my expected "band" of Necro...shows what I know, sheesh. Close game but twice I over-committed and he made me pay with earth removal spells. It looked like I was dead when he Seria's Legioned up a handful of spitters and cleared my side of the board a second time. I managed to top deck a Pao to go with my Town Portal for the win.
So at this point in any other jackpot I would just top and hope that is enough for T2. I can really use the gold so T2 is always welcome. However, because of this challenge and also on a 7 game win streak I said screw it and tried another.

11-Adar-Malik W 10-1 250 telo. I drew a less than average hand and mulliganed into what may be the worst hand I have ever drawn with this deck. 1 creature, a hellfire imp, which I cannot cast first turn because of the 2 might and 2 magic requirements. UGH. First draw, however, I get a Succubus and keep drawing creatures. Nothing really exciting, he kept putting down creatures and I kept killing with creatures + damage. I depleted my hand perilously low but managed to pull out the win in the end.

So here is my standing at 250 telo:
So my quandry at this point is two-fold. First do I keep pushing in jackpot? I am on an 8 game streak and getting 2 more wins would be a great achievement. However, losing and dropping out of my first T1 would suck pretty badly. Second, my regular Elo has risen up to 1457 and I am riding a 20 game streak in ladder games. I think playing jackpot would be better for pushing to 1500 than ladder because losing to someone 200 elo below you is such a huge hit and I am much more likely to face higher elo players in the jackpot T1 level.

I know I won't win anything entering as there are already 4 people with higher telo's posted but what the heck I might as well share my streak. I really would like the 10 game streak jackpot achievement, but I also really really do not want to drop out of T1, so at this point I am undecided if I will play more or rest here.

I failed so hard this time.... seems I can't figure out to play any hero challenge.... First Jezziel failed,.... then Shaar failed.... the Fleshbane failed.... then Seria won a bit before failing.... so I ended up with dear reliable Sandalphon. So I kinda gave up in the end. :)

Here is the deck. Don't want to say much, most people know how it is doing - nothing new: http://www.mmdoc.net/show_deck/9723/

Wow nicely done CuCu!

08-30-2013, 05:16 PM
It seems that the ultimate deck for TELO rising isn't a deck but a couple or more decks, depending on the range you're actually facing.
Though, I'm not quite sure the field is stable from one day to another.

08-30-2013, 05:24 PM
I got T1 for the first time in a long time using Sandalhon Wombo Combo.
Highest I got was 9th place I think.

Was this the last jackpot challenge or will there be more ?

09-03-2013, 04:33 PM
Cool, thanks for the runner up! :)

Was this the last jackpot challenge or will there be more ?

Yet to be decided. The community has loved it, so I'd like to keep it going. They were originally created to have fun with during Road to Paris qualifiers.

I guess this all comes down to if people want to keep playing in them :)

09-03-2013, 05:44 PM
I would love the challenges to continue

09-03-2013, 08:37 PM
Having just discovered them, I too would enjoy seeing them continue.
