Sorry mate, it sounds painful, but if you still have your left arm you can use that for the joystick and hit the keybopard with your nose.

You are addicted and sevearly obsessed with AEP. I strongly suggest that you visit the FBAA meeting that is in progress right now. (forgotten Battles Addiction Anonymous).

Pfft. I've seen people play the guitar with their feet.

I hear lots of people say that playing flight sims hurts their shoulders and back.

I feel the problem is the desktop height. It's simply too high for comfortable use of a joystick. I use my keyboard tray (made sure I got a desk with one, specifically for a comfortable joystick height) and I play for hours, no pain ever.
Physical pain, I mean. Not the crippling emotional kind http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

When you're paralyzed, you go into a sort of spinal shock, so your back doesn't hurt at all for a good while. Its very strange, be sure.

You might consider having a special joystick made so you can still play. For instance, you could have a mouthpiece put on the top of the joystick, and have the buttons relocated for toungue operation. There are therapists that can help with such a project.

Just spend a few days "tweaking" CFS3 to look good and play well.

That should turn you off combat flight sims for a while.

All joking aside...I pinched a nerve in my shoulder by playing too much FB. My fingertips went all numb and stuff for like 2 months. The good news: My physiotherapist was HOT!

But you can after BoB France/Poland addon CD and after MED/Pacific and after SPAIN and after the next Easter Front sim--about 7 years from now according to the Plan (more likely 14 years). Then you can find some relief. Better idea--go out and buy 3FSC real quick and say you were brought down by Microsoft. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I busted a small toe last week running to record CLEO on time early in the morning and she is high maintenence but she is worth it.

the nerve that runs between the elbow joint can get pinched and cause discomfort, even a lost of feeling in the fingers over a period of tyme. it is especially occurant in the arm that is used for joystick control. as such, it is imperative that one periodically re-adjusts the point to which the elbow rests upon one's desk.

i call it "joystick armitis". no joke...it could happen to you.

I usually fly with elbow up, and that is only when I really need the stick. Mostly--in cruise flight including cruise climb/dive--I don't even touch stick and fly by the trims and lay arm down next to stick...except for the Polikarpovs with no trim. They are alot harder for me--but also more fun.

The need for decent ergonomics is truly great for the addicted. I'm on a business trip right now, and yesterday I found myself using the hotel's complementary ironing board as a joystick table because the desk in my room is too high. I had been shopping around for one of those laptop supports, but Office Depot wants $70US for what amounts to a TV tray with wheels!

The ironing board was a little wobbly at times, but it was adjustable to the perfect height, and it was free.

cheers

Ya lost me here, pal. I haven't seen a recent episode of South Park for a number of years, and I don't know of any friends of mine that bat for that team.

However I do know of a prescription drug that numbs nerve pain, and unlike morphine, you even get to keep your mind! However, you probably shouldn't play FB when you're on it, because it can cause epilleptic siezures. Still, it makes nerve pain in your back just disappear!

The queston is, how much time does one have to spend playing with joysticks to end up like this? Two hours a day? That's the most I get these days, usually less than an hour daily.

Jasko

Don't put your joystick too high! I mean not on table you'll be better off with puting it on your lap or on special PC low level table.

Altitude, speed, manoeuvre and.... CRASH!

Hmmm - back pain?
Think about your whole set-up - and taylor it to suit you.

Seat, joy-stick location, throttle (if you have one).

I use the X-45 - which has large bases and a large joy-stick (too big for my hands - in 'normal' use).

I've placed the throttle on a low surface - two cheap, but sturdy, cardboard boxes. About 5 for 10 boxes in an office supply shop.

The JS even lower - on three inverted waste bins. The waste bins were sold in pairs at 1.99 a pair - from a DIY shop.

I can now grip the JS base with my knees.
If I ever get round to using rudder pedals, I'm going to have to bolt that stick down.

Total cost - less than 10

Two days ago, i had a severy painfull CTS episode (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome).

On my right hand, i couldn't move my index finger without beeing in excruciating pain, and the same happened on the left hand, but for the middle finger.
Overall, both my forearms were hurting like a sonuvab!tch at the tendons.

Today i'm feeling good as new, but once in a while this is bound to happen, alltough it never happened like it did two days ago.

I strongly suggest that if you spend long hours in front of your PC, that you don't neglect under no circustance, your confort.

I wonder what it was like for real pilots in the old days. Don't know where, but I read IL~4 had no pilot assist and flying it long missions was all muscle and all brain. Very bad.
