View Full Version : Excessive dumbing down of AI in latest patch?

I have not noticed other posts on this. Over the past several of days when I have fired up FB I have noticed that wingmen and other units (both Russian and German) are much more reluctant to attack. Shades of CFS2!!!!!!!

F.E. I was in an FB quick mission last night (it was a german ground attack mission flying a late bf 109 equipped with 108 cannon pods and accompanied by HS 129s.) Despite numerous orders to attack the ground columns all other planes circled aimlessly for most of the time and in most cases did not even seem to fire a shot before turning away and heading back towards base.

Same when I substituted ME262 armed with bombs. Most returned to base still with their bomb loads intact despite repeated orders to attack.

What's happening guys. One of the appeals of this sim is that wingmen in the past actually obeyed commands rather than just being there for apprearances as in CFS2.

Sorry but I have normally viewed complaining posts with distain but this has to be a major negative for an otherwise fine sim and progressively better add ons.

Its just a bug. Some types of planes won't respond to ground attack orders.

This used to work ok in original FB (the only problem was that planes wouldn't attack ships). In recent patches, it appears to have have gotten more buggy concerning ground units.

I have been pointing out AI flaws for the past few months, as someone else did, too. Even sent the bug reports during the beta, with no signs of life from developers and no traces of them in the readme.

We are few, caring about AI: here you will find mainly people discussing about planes performance.

I think it's safe to assume that if we are getting something new in this regard (AI), it will be with the next sim. On the other hand, nothing about it has been said in the official announcement, only hints at the new flight model and graphics, so probably we shouldn't expect much.

If you're looking for a mean AI, give a look at Homeworld2 (which is a space-themed RTS).

I've experienced the similar problem. During La5 campaign, IL2s escorted by fighters didn't drop their bombs on the target factory and returned to base with bomb loads. Although enemy fighters are all shot down and it's situation was very safe, they didn't attack the target. I don't understand why. I'm not sure it's a bug. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif ???

Sad, but true /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-sad.gif .

I find that with the 262s the AIs seem to work fine. You will need to be very close to the target in order for your 2-dimensional pixelated wingmen to see and attack them. Four 262s will shoot up a vehicle column in a single pass, quite a sight! That's not to say AI is perfect, though, some planes just won't attack no matter what.

Lousy as the AI are now...they're still the best in any WW2 Combat Flight Simulator I'm aware.

If you can't get the AI to attack with commands. Go into the FMB and SET WAYPOINT on the targets. That works for me usually.

Forgot to mention

you can also SET WAYPOINT on other fighters, bombers, etc.

Could the Gunners in the Bombers be made just a little bit better? Right now they are green horns. I have seen a 111 tail gun miss a plane 100m straight behind him!

I just found recently that gunner effectivness is strongly related to the AI skill level you set for them. Same with bombing accuracey (at least for bomb carrying Ju~87s.) Set to Vet and above they will pilot-kill you quick if you attack them from their behinds.
