Hi Guys

Since the AEP has come out, IL2Skins.com has been flooded with traffic, so much in fact that the site has slowed to a crawl. The last time this happened the site crashed, but Sharx was around and managed to sort it out quite quickly.

This time could be different. Sharx does not has the time to spend on the site at the moment due to other commitments. If the site crashes now, it could be down for weeks...even months!!

So how can you help?? Simple. Please restrict yourself to downloading only 1 skin per day. Skinners, same thing applies...please do not upload more than 1 skin per day and please do not hot link to screenshots on the site.

All this is only short term and for the good of the site, so please help us by sticking to these simple rules and keep IL2Skins.com up and running for everyone to enjoy http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Thanks

EDIT: Some more info from CanonUK:

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>
With the release of the Aces Expansion pack, there has been a flurry of skinning activity with lots of excellent skins being uploaded to il2skins.com. However, Sharx hasn't yet found time to update the aircraft list with the new additions. As a result, the new skins are not classified correctly. Once Sharx has added the new planes, it will be necessary to go through the archive and correct the entries. This will be quite difficult for the skin moderators if the skins are scattered in various categories.

So if you upload an AEP skin to www.il2skins.com, (http://www.il2skins.com,) can you please classify it as '0-select aircraft' as plane type (the default entry) so it will be easier to find when it comes to correcting them.

Thankyou for your cooperation!

If you've already uploaded skins, and they are classified incorrectly, you can fix it yourself if you want. If you go to 'Manage Skins' when you're logged in, you can change the aircraft type to '0-select aircraft'. It's near the bottom of the list.

Of course, once the list is updated with the actual new planes, you can use the 'manage skins' tool to correct all aircraft types to the actual things (i.e P80), and save us some work

They'll be added when time allows, but it'll be a while still.

Traffic seems to have doubled or more since AEP's release, and we'd really appreciate community cooperation here. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Is there a way to donate some money to Sharx to keep that excellent site alive?

I bet, there are a LOT of people who download skins from that site daily, including me, willing to pay for it...or support it!

I would also like to add, if you start downloading megga loads of skins for FB Aces PLEASE BEWARE, you may be dissapointed, A lot of these will not be up to the standards you expect at the moment...

Quite a few people have jumped on the bandwagon trying to get skins out before others for some reason, whilst not having ACES to test them on and THESE MAY WELL NOT MAP correctly on the skins and will get corrected and updated,

I have found to my chargrine on the Spitfire i am doing that it stretches and distorts badly at the rear, this i will correct and fix before i post a skin, but there where/are Spitfire Skins posted online before the Aces add on Game came out that are incorrect and do not line up.
SO Please give it time till everyone has the game worldwide and the skins are sorted and in place.............

On a personal note on behalf of myself and all of the skinners that post on IL2 skins, I am flattered and pleased for all of my fellow skinners that this has become such a huge success and is as popular as it is, but remember one person is Paying for this, Namely Sharxs, he has asked people to help out by donating via paypal on the site, remember you could be paying $30 dollars plus for some of the add ons that offer you "new Aircraft" so please donate a bit , no matter how small if you can, none of the skinners benefit, we do it for the love of it, but it helps Sharks with the cost he incures running the site, and believe me it isn't cheap............... Thanks for listening to me.

Thanks Tully http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif I must stress though guys, no-one is asking you to stop downloading skins or stay away. Just to go easy. A good yardstick is the number of people online. If its over 100 then its busy and it might be an idea to come back later. Last night, it nearly hit the 200 mark which is the most i have ever seen there http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Thanks for the offer Pingu. The problem is that I do not have any admin rights at the site so cannot transfer files or anything like that. Its Sharx's site and only he has the power to that. And that is the problem....he is tied up with other commitments at the moment so if the site does crash, he might not even realise until he next visits it, and he aint there much these days http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Will Comply.

Il2 skins is a favorite site... I think it is also time to send a few more bucks,,, when the fever abates. I will wait a few days even for a look-see.

Meanwhile, I have discovered ship battles and how to get the Catalinas to take off and land on water.

Every day this sim amazes me.

Not that I'm trying to re-open the downloading floodgates, but checking the site, the download and view icons are up again (thanks BTW, that helps me avoid eating bandwidth with wasteful repeat downloads/views) and total users are down. Has Sharx been in for some maintenance?

Hi All!

WOW it's so nice to see so much support. Special thanks for the staff, they are doing awesome stuff for the site http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I've spent almost all the night working on code optimization. When Il2Skins.com was first coded by me, i never expected so much traffic, so i coded everything to be "Dynamic". That mean that about everything is done in real time. And that is putting a real load on the MySQL server, which is responsible for when the site is slow. What i did today, is to optimize most of the queries and using SQL caching.

I'm done with phase 1, which basically made the site enjoyable again, the speed is now very good i think. But it will not be enough on peak time. So basically, what i'm doing right now are Daemons (scripts), that will create static page for the intro page, every 10 minutes except of the page being generated on-the-fly everytime someone goes to the main page. That should help a lot as well.

Phase 3 will be to port everything to modperl/apachehttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifBI instead of regular CGI/Perl that is currently being used. I'm trying to make the site to stay at all the time under a 2.0 server load, which is not the case currently. In the last weeks, i've seen horrible slow times with server loads as high as 35. I also upgraded the memory to 1 gig. The disks are doing fine, they are RAID-1 10,000 RPM SCSI disks.

I expect to finish the phase 2 optimization later this night and i'll keep everyone informed on Il2Skins boards.

Thanks to everyone for supporting the site.

Best regards,

Sharx
