So, in case anyone has missed it, the main page has been updated.
http://might-and-magic.ubi.com/mightandmagicx-legacy/en-GB/world/index.aspx

What we've finally been shown is the world map.

Now, we don't know if it's a WIP or just a simple version created solely for display on the game's website... Nevertheless, I've stumbled upon some pretty unfavourable opinions about it on various forums, and ito be honest, it's hard not to agree. While it's understandable that the devs probably don't want to show/spoil too much, the fact remains this map doesn't feel like a Might and Magic one at this stage.

So, assuming the developers do plan on including a nice map with the game (printed with a Collector's Edition or in a pdf form), let's show some nice examples of what the MM fans are familiar with.

This is probably the best example, the art is so beatiful and imagination-sparking, not to mention all points of interest are clearly visible and wonderfully presented.

These guys have no artistic talent or inspiration. I thought they were supposed to be French?

It's a bit minimalist, but I think that's the intention right now. The one location of note on the map is the one area that has been previewed so far.

I mean, it's not like a paper map that we're being given with the game, like the other examples you noted. It's just part of the promotion, which will probably get filled in with more areas of note as more information comes out.

This is not the final map. Towns, dungeons etc. are still to be added.

That's what I'm hoping for, but I also hope the art style is changed COMPLETELY. It looks like a quick Photoshop job and doesn't compare well at all to the beautifully hand-drawn maps of old MMs.

Does the art style remind anyone else of Zelda: Wind Waker?

yeah the new world map is unimpressive, but they are saying the maps are supposed to be twice as big as the old games. and its probably not the final version of the world map, given the details are missing from it.

I haven't heard this; can you link us to the interview where a developer or representative explicitly says this?

this is what i feared when i saw the first legacy footage ... the same as in warhammer mark of chaos (ok there the map was even worse), i don't understand why they make classic games so childish looking these days, i hate this style so damn much.
i would rather play a new might and magic with the graphics from part 8 than this crap.

Of course the world map cannot compete with the originals', due to the devs' (more likely the Ubi suits', actually) decision to place it on a smallish peninsula of their current HoMM setting. Unfortunalely, that world is a bit generic and far less suited for an M&M game. Also, as a small part of a far larger world, they are simply able to attain the sheer scope and variety of the original games' maps, even if they were to redraw it from scratch.

I really hope that this is just a part of the world! As the location map it would be ok, but as a world map it is inefficient.

World map in almost every RPG is suposed to consist a few different climates. Just a little bit of desert in the south and a little bit of snow in the mountains would give the map that "feeling of completeness" which players lack when looking at this.

Atmosphere could be also changed just by adding one or two islands with different climate to which a player could travel by boat during some of the quest (not necessarily all the time). Being all the time stuck in mild climate actually really sucks, for people want to have that feeling of exploring something different than that forest next to your own town...

Glad to see a familiar face that is 10 years ago.

There is nothing in that new map that makes me want to explore it.

Where are the deserts? Where are the volcanic areas?

Not even a "here be dragons".

Very uninspired!

"Whereas the eastern part of the Peninsula is civilized, the western part remains an inhospitable land, with dark forests, thick bogs, perilous mountains and desolate barrens, roamed by wild animals, brigands and other dangers, while pirates terrorize its coastline."

The description itself is more attractive and give a glimpse to the variety of environments we can expect but indeed I hope it is not the final map as it is a bit too "smooth" and lacks color variations.

I once did a complete handdrawn worldmap for M&M2, including every bit of information, obtained through the game...those were the days, my friend,... :D

True, the description sounds promising. It'd be great if the world map was equally imagination sparking, unfortunately, the one we've been shown thus far is not. It's incredibly bland compared to older ones.
Here's hoping the team is secretely working on something new that will "wow" us.

Hi guys,

Thank you for discussing the world map of MMX within this thread! I just wanted to let you know, that we have seen your worries and that you'll find a first reply to them (and others) on the blog (click (https://mightandmagicx-legacy.ubi.com/opendev/blog/post/view/51dc2a63888ef64b39000003) to the answer):

Julien (Marzhin93): “Although it is true that the story and therefore the environment in which MMX is placed is not a whole world like there was in MM1-5, we'll still have different environments like plains, barren lands, forests, jungles, mountains etc. We’ll just not have so drastic climate changes like an ice field being located near a desert. The peninsula explored in MMX is more "realistic" in that regard.”

Stephan (LE-Stephan): “I believe that there is not such a huge difference when comparing the size of the MMX world map with the one from Clouds of Xeen.”

Thomas (LE-Thomas): “True, the grid size (x*y) of the world from MMX is actually a little larger.”.

I have written that in a couple of postings on the forums now already, however incase you've missed it, there will be an Open Dev Chat (https://mightandmagicx-legacy.ubi.com/opendev/blog/post/view/51d58c26888ef61902000000) available tomorrow (6 pm GMT+2), in which we'll discuss the world map worries and other questions/concerns you might have.

Thanks,
Anna (LE-Larissa)
