Future of Xbox set-top box uncertain, report claims

WSJ also says next-gen Xbox will launch this holiday

Microsoft hasn't yet decided whether it'll introduce the previously rumoured (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/379959/xbox-tv-device-to-take-on-apple-tv-in-2013-report/) Xbox set-top box, according to Wall Street Journal (http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323744604578473174039768406.html) sources.

http://cdn.medialib.computerandvideogames.com/screens/dir_2970/image_297092_thumb_wide300.jpg (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/viewer.php?mode=article&id=297092)

It has previously been reported that Microsoft is developing a low-cost alternative to its next-gen Xbox designed to provide streamed access to core entertainment services.

It has been claimed that the device would run on the core components of Windows 8 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/pc/games/11860/windows-8/) and support casual games rather than full Xbox ones. WSJ sources said recent prototypes integrated Kinect (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/xbox-360/platformer/11038/kinect/) functionality.

The site also claims that the next-generation Xbox (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/402932/next-xbox-event-on-may-21-microsoft-confirms/), which is set to be revealed on May 21, will be released in time for the holiday season in time to go head-to-head with PS4 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/392496/ps4-release-date-is-holiday-2013/).

Eh.. I'm excited because of the curiosity. There have been a ton of rumors surrounding the system. ( some I wish would be true--Because I want Sony to pull through this year) I believe the name may have been confirmed as he infinite. Which I guess is cool I guess. Other than that, meh. I don't care. My console of choice has been and probably always will be Playstation.

I know Xbox will have a big focus on making the box the center of the room for entertainment and all your needs.

I feel like the focus of these consoles now has gone too PC and not game based anymore. Can we just play an awesome game? I don't want to get on twitter and facebook through my console. Really? That's why I use my phone or laptop for. oh well just a small rant.

Also, with the Playstation 3 you have saved over £100 on its online if I am correct?
PSN = £0.
Xbox = £40 per year x 7 = £280?
I don't even know if that is correct but you have saved more money on PSN than on Xbox. :P

poptartz20
05-11-2013, 09:42 AM
Well... it can anywhere it can cost anywhere from £32 - £40 which is $50 - $60 here. not to mention the money that you spent on the console. which was probably a good $300 or £195 then you had to buy the wireless adapter then games. Or I'm sure some just upgraded the system and bought a new one another chunk of money gone. yeaahh... not to mention the whole Red Ring of Death thing. which I personally have a friend that has bought 3 xboxes for various reasons to my one ps3. Haha. True dedication I guess.

The only thing I ever had to replace was my HDD it was going bad (sound skipping) which was a cheap fix. Also I made it better by upgrading the size. So.. win win? Haha. I'm sorry xbox is a joke to me. not that it's a bad system I just feel they are looking to make more money.

Not to mention I'VE NEVER HAD TO BUY BATTERIES! :) Hahah.

Bought a PS3 in 2007 and a 360 in 2011 because PS3 multiplats suck. Getting a PS4 though, kinda curious to see what Microsoft do but not that bothered about the live conference. If I miss it I will only be missing Fable, CoD, Gears, Forza, Halo and other crap.

I hope rumours that the Nextbox will be more of an entertainment console rather than a gaming console. The reason being is that I would like to see Sony have an even larger audience this time. (In terms of the launch.)

Yeah thats what I said in another thread. Whenever Microsoft say best seller console for the 278thmillion month running, thats US only. But like you and I have said, PS3 has sold more units globally than Xbox anyway.

I've had my Xbox 360 since June 2008 and overall I am very pleased with my online gaming experience. I have had 1 instance of "Red Ring Of Death" but after calling Microsoft Technical support I was able to have it replaced free-of-charge and resume my gaming in a matter of 3 weeks. The Xbox 360 exclusive titles I fell in love with were Halo and Gears of War and I own every single game in both of the respective series. My only gripe with the Xbox 360 though if anything is that SONY tends to take more risks with the exclusives that they produce and this means that many amazing games such as Journey, Heavy Rain, The Last Of Us, and Beyond: Two Souls are ONLY PS3 exclusives. For the next generation of Microsoft gaming hardware, I hope at least 3 new exclusive IP's are added to the Xbox roster in order to better compete with PS4 exclusives and that the console itself is catered towards core gamers such as myself.

A core gamer will buy $60 games and DLC evey month or so/ A casual gamer will buy an Arcade or mobile game every week or so for $1 and if gutsy for $5......Who spends more money?

Same. I've had pretty minimal problems with it and a friend who has a PS3 had his break. Also, I had a couple of non-shooter exclusive games here and there. Honestly I could never find any of the PS3 exclusive games interesting no matter how great they turned out, but I'd have really hated to miss out on some of the Xbox ones. Apart from that all the games I actually gave a **** about were multiplatform.

I'm not interested in any of the new consoles from what I've heard so far, but I'll have to look in on the official info to see how they actually turn out.

What I've always done and will be continuing is too switch every different generation so that I can play the exclusives for the console that I missed out on. So I had a PS2, then I went to 360 so I could play games exclusive to the original Xbox, then this gen I will buy PS4 so I can buy PS3 exclusives even though they said that backwards compatibility has to be through emulation and not just inserting a PS3 disc, which I'm not quite sure what that means.

I guess you'd have to download an emulator onto your system or copy one via burned CD like I did with the 360's compatibility update. It's interesting that they'd mention that actually. If it turns out they plan to make emulators available in the future for all consoles, that could solve the problem of backwards compatibility quite nicely, even if you have to buy the emulators (if you have a lot of games for that emulator, it'd be a very good deal.)

Same..

my only "fear" is they change the pad too much, the 360's pad is pretty much prefect - even use one on my PC, sticks are nice, buttons in a good layout and triggers are really good..

I know it's sad, but I just want them to stick a new logo on the pad and leave it be..

I fear change.. (Well in the control pad anyway!)

hardware wise - rip it all out and start again..

DX11 gpu
quad core CPU (2.8)
6gb ram (min)
blu ray
1tb drive option.

updated dash and I'm happy ;)

Well from what i have heard the control pad will be pretty much the same ( though this is a rumor through the internet ) because the design for the 360 pad was efficient and comftable which i have to admit i do like the 360 pad because its very user friendly and i am familier with the button configuration.

According to sources there is an upadate coming to the existing dash next month but i am 100% agreed with you that its whats inside that counts ( obviously the cosmetic architecture does have to be eye catching ) but thats a minimal thing for me. Microsoft being Microsoft i am anticipating a very powerfull console and i am really hoping the new XBOX gets released alongside ACBF !! because i will be purchasing both simultaneously ! god my AMEX will be taking a battering lol !

Xbox 360 successor is called… “Xbox”? (http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=560444)

The name of Microsoft’s new home console may have leaked out a bit early.

At the end of a Call of Duty: Ghosts commercial hosted on GameSpot’s live-stream for the system’s announcement event, an image appears with the name “Xbox” and the words “A new generation begins.”

We should be finding out if “Xbox” is indeed the final name in about a half hour or so…

3d glasses? That's odd as it depends on what TV/screen you have rather than the computer hardware (or so I thought).
Hmm dunno...

if they are active 3D glasss - a 60hz TV can produce 30hz video in 3D - in theory.. Just one frame for left eye - next is right eye.. 30fps is enough for video and maybe games..

just need something to control the glasses and processing the image ;)

time will tell though ;)

Getting close!

I have never heard that idea before, sounds very doable actually. That would be a killer-app to sell a "3D-converter" with the console. Interesting

Think some people have got it working it the past - but not marketed it.. Wasn't easy to mass market it, since it depended on the tv being a certain hz etc, You could use a 50hz TV even - 25fps - if the player / trigger device is scalable.. I suppose.. Not great for games - good for blu ray though...

tbh I doubt it will have it, since some people would still complain.. LOL

Confirmed: Xbox One isn’t always-online (http://www.vg247.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-does-not-require-always-on-connection/)

There’s no need to panic anymore: Xbox One will not be always-online as initially rumored.
Following Microsoft’s unveiling announcement, GameTrailers spoke with Don Mattrick, who confirmed that an Internet connection isn’t required to use the console.

He said:

“No, you don’t always have to be connected. But for a lot of things like multiplayer gaming, for streaming content from the Internet, you’re gonna need an Internet connection. That’s the world we live in.”

I expect they assumed people would know the games will be great, so focused on the bonus things it can do.

so while Sony didn't show the hardware, but really focused on games (even if running on PC) - MS showed the console and the bonus stuff, rather than games at all (maybe due to them not wanting PC games shown?)

Either way, E3 should be "interesting" - don't think there will be much difference in terms of games tbh..

-Not compatible with Xbox 360 game discs
- Xbox Live Arcade games won’t transfer
- Gamerscore will transfer
- x86 architecture doesn’t make backwards-compatibility possible
- “The decision wasn’t ‘we need a gamebox’” – Xbox executive Marc Whitten
- Installation seems mandatory
- Statement: “On the new Xbox, all game discs are installed to the HDD to play.”
- If a disc was used with a second account, that owner would be given the option to pay a fee and install the game from the disc, which would then mean that the new account would also own the game and could play it without the disc
- Microsoft wouldn’t discuss “traditional” used-games – as in, if a second person simply wanted to put the disc in and play the game without installing – and without paying extra
- Xbox One will give game developers the ability to create games that use Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing service
- This means that they might be able to offload certain computing tasks to the cloud rather than process them on the Xbox One hardware itself
- This would necessitate the game requiring a connection
- Not forced to make games that have these online features

So Ubisoft released a Press statement about Xbox 1

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — May 21, 2013 —

Today, following the announcement of Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, Ubisoft revealed that two of its most highly-anticipated titles – Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Watch Dogs – will be available on the platform later this year. Ubisoft also announced that these titles will be among at least six next-gen games released for Xbox One in the system’s first year.

“The next generation of consoles will reinvigorate our industry and make it possible for us to deliver incredible new entertainment to gamers,” said Yves Guillemot, co-founder and chief executive officer, Ubisoft. “Our teams are using the innovations in connectivity, immersion and social gaming included in Xbox One to create original and memorable next-gen gaming experiences.”

In addition to Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag and Watch Dogs, Ubisoft will deliver a mix of new episodes of existing franchises, new IPs and digital titles for Xbox One within the system’s first 12 months on the market. More information about the lineup of games planned for the new system will be available during Ubisoft’s press conference at E3.

Some more Details :-

Xbox One was designed from the ground up to be the centerpiece of every living room with modern hardware, and it features the all-new Kinect, the new Xbox One Wireless Controller, a 500GB hard drive,3 an eight-core, x86 processor, wireless networking connectivity, HDMI®, three super-speed USB 3.0 ports, and a high-speed Blu-ray disc player. Features include the following:

Xbox One console. Designed with the 21st century living room in mind, the Xbox One console features a premium design with a gloss black finish, horizontal orientation and a slot-loading Blu-ray™ disc player.

Updated wireless controller. Enhanced with more than 40 technical and design innovations, the new impulse triggers offer precise haptic fingertip feedback and a newly engineered D-pad delivers greater responsiveness and control.4 An infrared LED on the front of the controller allows Kinect to automatically recognize you, making it easier to pick up and play.

All-new, active-infrared capabilities increase precision, allowing it to work in nearly any lighting condition and expanding field of view to accommodate a greater variety of room sizes. The PS4 has 4K support. Also X1 won't function without Kinect attatched.

So if you break the connector for your Kinect... well HAHA

PS4 will win greatly this gen last time as xbox launched 1 year yearly and got some selling yet overall selling is still low compared to PS3.

This time almost same time both consoles are being launched ,so definitely PS4 will sale more then Xbox 1.

Xbox 1 might sale more in US.

Truthfully...., that was the 1 hour in my life that I would want a refund on. The non backwards compatibilty turned me off right out of the gate. The graphic are cool, but I'm old enough an expirenced in gaming to know that graphics aren't everything, sure they look all purdy, but they don't run the game. I will say though that it's about time that they jumped on the blu-ray bandwagon (better late than never eh microsoft ). The biggest let down to me today was they never gave a clue as to the cost, though I'm sure given it's un-godly size it will easily reach the $600 mark (an that's out the door estimates on my part), an speaking on it size, good golly...., can you make it any bigger. Basically, I'll stick to my trusty 360, an later invest in the PS4 when the time comes.

Sounds like we agree on the graphics thing. I'm not even bothering with the PS4. It doesn't have backwards compatibility either apparently, and most of the games I'd think of getting for it would be older ones. Heard the WiiU isn't backwards compatible either, so I might be better off getting a Wii. Hope the next 'next gen' will be less disappointing.

WiiU actually has backwards compatibility. What it has is that you need to run Virtual Console content on "Wii mode" (not being able to use the tablet or pro controllers, pretty much emulating the Wii as it is) unless the game has been brought over the the WiiU vc, where you pay $1 for getting the WiiU features for the games that are there. Off-screen gamepad usage, for example.

The Xbox One already bombed for me. I already knew that Microsoft wasn't doing the best choices lately but man, this takes the cake. Probably gonna stick Wii U and PS4 this gen. I'm still not sold on the PS4 on launch and I probably won't be (probably will wait a few years for a price drop) but it definitely looks tons better than this for me already. And I went Wii-Xbox360 last gen.

Some Q&A

Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?

A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Q: How do consumers benefit by being connected to the cloud?

A: The cloud makes every experience better and more accessible. Because Xbox One is powered by the cloud:

• Your games have more power available to create new gameplay, persistent worlds, and deeper experiences.

• Your system and games can update automatically, so you shouldn’t have to wait for downloads or updates.

• Your games and entertainment are stored and saved in the cloud, so you can access them anytime, from any Xbox One. • Start a game, movie, or TV show on one console and finish exactly where you left off on another.

• You can play multiplayer games with your friends, stream movies or TV shows right away, and enjoy the community and social features of Xbox Live.

• Xbox One can recognize you, log you in and tailor your home screen just for you.

You can discover what your friends are playing, watching and listening to if they choose to share. These are just a few examples of how customers benefit from our platform being connected to the Internet. It brings the future of TV and games to our consumers—and it’s designed for today and the decade ahead.

Q: When will Xbox One launch and in what markets?

A: Xbox One will launch in markets around the world later this year. We’ll have more to share later.

Q: Can I use my current gamertag on Xbox One and will my Gamerscore and Achievements transfer?

A: Yes. Your current Xbox Live Gamertag will stay with you on Xbox One if you choose to keep it, and your hard-earned Gamerscore and Achievements will indeed carry over from Xbox 360.

Q: Will Xbox One be backward compatible with my existing games?

A: Xbox One hardware is not compatible with Xbox 360 games. We designed Xbox One to play an entirely new generation of games—games that are architected to take full advantage of state-of-the-art processors and the infinite power of the cloud. We care very much about the investment you have made in Xbox 360 and will continue to support it with a pipeline of new games and new apps well into the future.

Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?

A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

Q: Will my current Xbox Live Gold membership work with Xbox One or will I have to buy a new one?

A: You do not need to buy a new Xbox Live Gold membership. Your current membership will work on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Q: Why require Kinect with every Xbox One?

A: The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform. By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you.

Q: Do I need to have a specific cable or satellite TV provider to watch live TV on Xbox?

A: Our goal is to enable live TV through Xbox One in every way that it is delivered throughout the world, whether that’s television service providers, over the air or over the Internet, or HDMI-in via a set top box (as is the case with many providers in the US). The delivery of TV is complex and we are working through the many technologies and policies around the world to make live TV available where Xbox One is available.

Q: Xbox One is a more powerful product compared to Xbox 360, but does it also use more power?

A: No. By providing multiple power states in Xbox One, we’ve balanced energy efficiency with functionality. We’ve taken a completely different approach to how Xbox One consumes power. It only uses the power it needs at that particular moment for the task at hand.

I've always been a playstation gamer and I made the switch to the master race a couple years ago so a new console really didn't interest me much (if at all). However, I watched the reveal and the new box seems pretty cool. Those quick switch and voice activation features seem pretty cool.

That said, I was intrigued but I just know the thing will be way too expensive and have too many greed induced, money grubbing systems for me to even consider purchasing one.

Beside all preowned issues and mandatory connection/product registration my main question is why should i pay more for a product than US citizen if i won't be able to use more than a half functions? In my country Xbox Lie is not supported too.

Don't know about heartbeat my blonde friend :D(that was on purpose) but...

The Xbox One controller contains an infrared LED that will allow Kinect to automatically recognise the player, it's been revealed.

The new wireless controller, which will ship with the console later this year, has been "enhanced with more than 40 technical and design innovations", Microsoft states, and includes "new impulse" technology that sends vibrations directly through the triggers.

Also MS showed they level of professionality after the sow when their representatives told completely different stories in interviews. One representative says one thing, other representative says that is not true, third says it is possible but it is not final decision etc. Basically they are trying to hide as many as they can because some features are huge deal breakers. I am only sorry for gamers because Xbox One will sell like hot cakes in US because MS will pay extreme amount of money for advertisement and non gamer population will buy it most.

My TV set-up does similar stuff , wave , talk , Scan / recognise ............................. It's fun ( for 20 minutes )

multiple activation /installation game fees & lots of interactive TV features (NBA, Superbowl - Sport ).....................only available to USA initially on launch .
( Good use of 20 mins promo - A feature unavailable to 2 thirds of the Gobe )

New App to interact with tablets & smartphone tech .......

And a quick skip over the inclusion of Blu-ray drive ;).....................The format Microsoft were convinced would Bomb, & tried to rival with HD-DVD .

Comes across as a list of PS4 specs / features with a Kinnect attached to be honest .

All topped off with - Big 10 mins + reveal of C.O.D DLC maps :nonchalance:

Next-gen Kinect will release for Windows (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/408132/next-gen-kinect-will-release-for-windows/)

PC compatible version forthcoming.

Thief New pic in Reveal of X1 (http://www.computerandvideogames.com/408175/thief-confirmed-for-xbox-one-with-new-screenshot/)

Behind the scene X1 (http://www.gametrailers.com/full-episodes/1x6o6u/gt-tv-behind-the-scenes-of-xbox-one)

So here some issues summarized for X1

"Confirmed" Issues:
- Forced online activation for all games
- Massive emphasis on TV, services and non game related focus
- Live TV services available in US only at launch, requires separate device
- No self publishing for indie devs
- No headset included
- Over emphasis on Kinect interface
- Xbox One not being backwards compatible with the 360 games or accessories.
- Microsoft's failed attempts to correct PR with contradicting FAQ's, vague responses, misinformation.

Hardware:
- DDR3 confirmed instead of GDDR5
- Potentially Only 5GB of the 8GB ram available for games
- Only HDMI for output.
- 3 OS's? At best, confusing, at worst, a nightmare.
- Kinect needed to be plugged in for Xbox One to function
- Non-replaceable Hard Drive (though not as much an issue, as external drives are supported similar to other consoles)
- Console uses a large external power brick (Conflirmed by DF/Wired)

Problems with the announcement itself:
- EA games prerendered using in game assets
- COD looked less than stellar
- Quantum break reveal was confusing

Unconfirmed issues that still need clarification:
- How much is this gonna cost?
- Complex used games system that is anti consumer?
- How the hell does game borrowing work?
- Charged fee for playing used games on non linked profile?
- Console that needs to be connected to internet every 24 hrs to play games? (Phil Harrison says one thing, ms backtracked a bit later)

Wow, this creeps me out. And it also reminds me of that one cluster from ACB.

Yes, another gimmick. Why would a games console need to look at your face to sign in? What was wrong with turning your Xbox 360 on and clicking your profile? Why do you need to be a lazy **** and say "Xbox music", when you can just scroll to the right for 2 seconds to get there? Most of the conference was gimicks using kinect. I mean come on, skype? Whats wrong with using your laptop, not to mention you will need gold or whatever to probably use it, as well as needing to pay to use Xbox One's youtube or IE which you pay for anyway. When watching TV, why would you want to know about your fantasy team getting points? When you are watching a movie, why would you want to snap IE into the corner to distract you from the movie?!

So..

Now the dust has settled a little - what are peoples thoughts?

I am happy.. why? I'll explain..

The console seems to be OK to me.. yes I know some of you have some very vocal thoughts - so let me explain..

You need Kinect to use the Xbox One
I'm ok with that - why?

I use Kinect as other owners do - for the odd game - otherwise it sits there for when I am too lazy to find my pad - I don't use it 24/7 to control the console, however it's handy.. the new console 'needs' it connected - so it's nothing new to me.. I can still use my pad to control the dashboard - MS have not said you can't, so I'm not assuming you can't- unlike some - would be very silly if you can't since som epeople are unable to use it due to health conditions etc.

Yeah space is an issue for some, and some simply don't want to use it at all - so don't? - stick it behind the console and forget about it - it's in the box, the console is going to be expensive either way, so optional that way if you want to use it - you will miss out on the use of it, but that's a choice.

Much like the PS4's video share options - I'm not interested in that at all - so won't use it = same with the game sharing - nope, I don't want people playing MY games for me.

One use codes for games

OK - not ideal - but I'm a PC gamer to = so have been used to it for the past 10 years..

If I want to play round a friends house, I can sign in with my profile, same as now and access MY content on their console..

Buying second hand - much like the current passports, I expect retailers will adjust the prices, well some will.... or I'll wait for the sales.

If I want to try a game before I buy - I expect, MS will have demos available - these has not been said yet, but I expect digital copies to release at the same time as retail - possibly with a trial version, or something.. time will tell

[Important thing to remember]

Have Sony said they are not using the same system?

I know they have said they are 'Not blocking used games' - however have they said the games don't have a one use code?

I can't find that anywhere - plenty of 'used games can be used' - but that's about it = used games can be used on the Xbox too... hmmm?

TV 'Stuff'

Bonus - there to use if I want - I have Sky [one of Xboxes Partners] - so I expect it could be a service supported - so IF/When it is - I can plug in my sky box into the console and away we go - no extra cost, bonus features.

Hardware Spec

Seems OK to me.

DX11 - 8GB ram - blu ray

That should produce some great looking games at 720p [target for PS4 also]

Some have posted saying the memory is slower - yeah MS use DDR3 and Sony use GDDR5 - tbh, I don't think it will make much of a difference, but E3 will show - I find it odd people who have no understanding of PCs etc or hardware see the 5 and jump in to say 'it's better' - not always..

The hardware - much like a PC depends on many things, other hardware, OS etc : - after all many said the Wii U was 'naff' not as good as PS3/Xbox - Need for speed most wanted - begs to differ ;)

I personally think - you will be hard pushed to tell the difference in the games.. which is great for everyone - means no 'best' version - get the one you want :)

E3 is the decider for me, see the games in action then I will decide...

Both consoles have some things which I won't be using, neither are purely games consoles now [if they have ever been?] - and that PS4 pad still needs to be tried..

BUT, I have an open mind - till E3 ;)

And no, I'm not a fan boy - just a gamer wanting a console to play games...

E3 is Judgement Day :P

Microsoft teases “huge” E3 announcement for Xbox 360, still has a lot of life

Microsoft will be spending most of its E3 conference time next month on the Xbox One. The company isn’t forgetting about its other console, however.
While speaking with GameSpot, Microsoft Game Studios executive Phil Spencer teased a “huge” announcement for the Xbox 360 that will be made during the company’s presser next month.

Harrison also said that the system still holds “a lot of life”.

Spencer said:

“I think the [Xbox 360] is going to be very vibrant for many years. In fact, we have a huge, I think it’s huge, [Xbox 360] announcement for E3 that I keep wanting to talk about, but I can’t. I think it will surprise people. I loved what we did last year with Minecraft; bring Minecraft to the box; six million units later it’s kind of a beast. I think there’s a lot of life in the [Xbox 360] for years to come.”

Xbox One doesn’t allow for self-publishing

Sony will allow for self-publishing on the PlayStation 4. Nintendo already allows for self-publishing on the Wii U. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of Microsoft and the Xbox One.Matt Booty, general manager of Redmond Game Studios and Platforms, told Shacknews recently that “as of right now, yes. We intend to continue to court developers in the ways that we have.”

Booty added:

“I would also expect that for this new generation, that we’re going to continue to explore new business models and new ways of surfacing content. But Microsoft Studios is a publisher that works with a wide range of partners, as do a lot of other people, to bring digital content to the box.”

Indeed.. E3 here we come :)

Slightly worried that Sony will be using the same product / one use key idea as MS - since they have been VERY careful to avoid answering that from what I have seen?

'we don't block used games' - is not the same as 'we don't charge to use them' - Since MS have used the same wording more or less..

And No, I have no insider info ;)

Both sound relatively cheap in price ...............Some people pay that for a Mobile phone
Wether or not most people use half the features both consoles have , That's still cheap for all the incorporated tech & devices in one machine .

Problem is , Some who are mainly interested in 1 or 2 features can find the price excessive (focusing /considering only the parts that interest them )

Yeah, though they have to actually make them available, and sometimes they miss out on some great ones.

If you're getting a new generation of a console you own though, you already bought the games so in that situation, backwards compatibility is far better than the ability to download the games.

yeap :)

MS messed up a lot of things for many people:

The information coming from them was confusing - mixed messages from different people..
The console reveal - was aimed at 'features' rather than games.. [E3 for games]
The whole 'used' games thing
no price /release date?

Sony too had faults:
No final hardware shown [due to waiting to reveal early?]
Using PC to show games [again, close to final spec, but could be seen as an issue?]
no price /release date?
no official statement about used games

Let the air settle - see the games - make a choice and be happy with it - both consoles are more powerful - and I expect larger.. since they both pack a lot of hardware ;)

Either way - it's a BIG step up from current gen!

Sushiglutton

24h later and I still feel real meh about the Xbox One reveal. There is no chance I will get that console, it's as simple as that. The focus is completely off and I would be paying for tons of things I would never use. Given how many games are going full multiplt lately (PC+consoles), I'm leaning towards not getting another console at all tbh. It just doesn't add enough for the extra hassle and money compared to what I can get on PC. I may change my mind and get Ps4, but I think my console gaming days are over.

I understand that is their plan, but it is a really poor strategy. The reaction in the gaming community and media was obv going to be very negative and now there is an uphill climb with Sony having all the momentum. Feels like they don't understand how the internet works. I could have told them exactly what would happen :).

Had they taken just one (or preferably two) of those 15 games and showed a real gameplay demo I think the reaction could have been very different. They could still have saved 14 of them for E3. Then there would have been something for their fans (like IGN's Xbox team lol) to hang on to when defending the system. Suprises me that they did not even do that.

After all these years it doesn't seem like they know what really matters to people in these big unveilings does it? Seems like there's always people that think they're in a totally different industry running these events. Normally, the games are all that really matters, but this time certain aspects of the systems' designs are actually having an effect on which one I want. -__-

I do not understand what Microsoft was thinking when they planned this reveal. I don't even understand what Microsoft's vision for the Xbox One (henceforth referred to as Xbone) is. I didn't buy an Xbox to watch the cable I already have, or to watch sports, or to use my voice to turn the stupid thing on and off while a creepy camera watches my movements. I bought an Xbox to play cool modern-day video games, and it's worked quite well for that. I tried to watch a video on YouTube once on my Xbox 360, only to be told I have to pay a subscription for Gold to use that functionality. Imagine if your computer worked like that, or even the Apple TV. They might as well just put a quarter slot right on the front of the device.

Okay, so people will say I'm not Microsoft's target audience. So who is? Who is going to be so enthralled by plugging their cable box into the Xbone and getting a snazzy experience that they'll spend $300, $400, $500 for it? The AppleTV and Roku devices already do something similar for much cheaper, and will likely go down similar paths (for instance, Apple may bring Siri to the AppleTV, etc.). Why? Because they don't have expensive gaming hardware built into them! I just don't see how Microsoft expects to sell an Xbone to someone who's not a gamer. It is clearly a high-end gaming machine, which only gamers are going to be willing to spend the money on. What am I missing?

Okay, so then you say wait until E3, this reveal event was meant for the non-gamer audience. What non-gamer audience? Where are all these people who care about the Xbox brand that don't play video games? Microsoft really expects them to be watching a live-streamed event during the middle of a work day? Seriously? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the most likely people to be watching your product reveal live-stream are going to be the hardcore fans of your brand and/or product. It's so obvious that the majority of the audience for this reveal was going to be gamers that you don't even have to think about it. Who is so stupid that they ignore and alienate their core audience when first revealing their product? Oh, it appears to be Microsoft.

The only consoles I've ever owned are the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Xbox and Xbox 360. I've always liked the Xbox controller much more than the PlayStation one, and the machine worked well. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but the Xbox was the product I liked most at the time. For the next generation, better graphics would be nice, but isn't the main selling point. I want a more powerful machine with more memory that will support bigger worlds with more NPCs, physics, interaction, etc. I don't want a device that will jack up the price to include a gimmicky motion control camera so I can use my hand to swipe left and right. It's so much quicker and simpler to press left or right on the D-pad, and you tend to not look like an idiot doing it.

Well sony just don't want to show you a rectangular box with ventilation that looks like a vhs player, they want to take their time and make the controls look so sexy that gamers will have orgasm!
You have to agree that just the glimpses of that ps4 teaser had more curves than Xbox ONE!?

Do you have a link that proves sony used pc for the demos?

No, I agree with the picture; both of them neglected some pretty obvious ****. IT's a GAMING CONSOLE. Wouldn't the top two things to show be...I don't know, the GAMES and the CONSOLE?http://static5.cdn.ubi.com/u/ubiforums/20120411.419/images/smilies/tongue.png (Keeping in mind that what the console does is even more important, but if you're calling it a console reveal, people will expect to see it.)

They seem to take their fans for granted way too much. Not everyone's a fawning fanboy that acts as if they were being paid to skew everything in favor of their console. A lot of people these days buy more than one. (Or want to, at least.)

Well you people have a big used games market because unlike us you didn't have any sort of game tied to account thing so you have to pay $60 for games come what may. Isn't that right?

No , currently on PS3 / 360 consoles , We buy a pre-owned game for £20 - We don't have to pay SONY / XBOX anything else to play that game in singleplayer online or offline.
Only a few games require us to buy a new Online passport for multiplayer type features - online multiplay is fair enough ( U-play passport AC Multiplayer as example )
But paying to use it offline in singleplayer is ridiculous for a pre-owned game.

This new X-BOX 1 System - sounds like however we play pre-owned games = with default activation fees We end up paying full price ( as if its a brand new game ) .........
Although the pre-owned game disc may no longer contain all original content like DLC codes - & may not be in perfect condition .

It's a ridiculous system for ANY console to impliment for pre-owned games - Not everybody plays online ..........Many never actually buy NEW games & only buy pre-owned ......This is just GREED before sense from the console companies i'd say ..

I meant if you have to buy a retail copy, does the price always stay $60? Not talking about used.

It was not a console reveal, sony never said that! It was just a sony meeting and everyone guessed they will announce the PS4! So yeah people should not expect things.

No - just like any format for retail copies - Prices for games varies from different retailers .

GAME in UK may sell a Retail game for £39.99/ £44.99 but Wallmart /ASDA may sell the same retail game for £29.99 / £34.99 .
Retail price it's sold at is dependant on the buying power of the retailer - Often subsidised by themselves to maximise sales volume. .

There is no fixed across the board price for games .

Everyone knows it was, they were PC's with "Close to PS4 specs" aka higher.

No, it goes down for new games.

Yeah, that part was aimed more at Xbox since they actually had an official unveiling. That doesn't mean Sony can slack off at E3 though. (All three major companies are guilty of at least one less-than-impressive E3 in their time.) Still, you'd think they would know by now that if they revealed details about their console, the competition would take the opportunity to show them up by showing theirs (which would have been a disadvantage for Sony normally XD) but maybe that shows they're particularly confident this time.

Can you imagine what would happen if 90% of the people who buy a next gen console choose a ps4 over an x1???

What M$ fails to realise is how much the used game market benefits the industry. Players sell their used games to make new games more affordable for them (as in buy a game they wouldn't have otherwise). Shops that work with used games, are able to survive and stock and sell every new game. They also usually employ gamers, you know, people who spend their salaries to games.

I do not condone piracy with what i'm about to say but I have to note that even piracy can be beneficent to the industry. Game demos are very rare nowadays. piracy often gives the opportunity for players to be introduced and hooked to a franchise they wouldn't otherwise have bothered with. Especially M$ should be aware about that, since piracy may be the only reason their OSs became dominant. Growing up, i didn't know many people who had original Windows on their desktop PCs. Even before high speed internet connections, it was extremely easy to find a cd copy of windows. Apple OSs could only work on Mac computers, linux was free so it was instantly deemed inferior to Windows. Why get something that is free when you can get something that costs money for free? Do they really think Windows was ever better than linux? No, they just profited by not doing much to stop piracy of their OS, or even by letting it leak and be cracked before even it's officially released. I still remember pictures of a copied cd with windows xp and the corporate key written on it weeks before windows xp was released. Eventually they did blacklist it but not before every pirate had been using it for months.

I repeat i do not support piracy, i am not using pirated OS or games but i understand how it also has some benefits, it's not the most evil thing ever

Studies actually show that people that torrent music lead to higher album sales too, piracy isn't always a bad thing.

NOT SAYING ITS A GOOD THING.

75% of IGN readers said they weren't happy with the Xbone.

I was curious to see what microsoft had for its next-gen, i am really happy that they have nothing for me to change my decision(PS4). The console they created is basically US-friendly, and a BIG "Fu*k you" to other countries!
