View Full Version : One of the funniest "dumb AI" moments..

..that I've had in a while just happened to me. I was done with my mission and in the last couple of minutes getting home so I left the plane on auto pilot while I went and grabbed a snack and got ready for my next flight. When I came back, the AI was already on short final so I let it go ahead and land my plane for me and taxi to a stop so I could end the mission and move on to the next.

He pulls my plane off the active, takes a quick right hand turn and buries my untouched plane into a previously destroyed cargo plane, killing my pilot on a 5 kill sortie. I was a bit upset at the time, but now I just think it's funny. That has to be right up there with flying into mountains, but this was something new and idiotic I hadn't previously seen the AI pull off before.

Gotta love it.

I have seen this behavior before... The AI seem to have a hard time avoiding other aircraft anyway, but they just ignore them on the ground.

I don't mind so much when or how the AI kill themselves, it's when they try to steal my kill by shooting straight through me that troubles me. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

All for fun I guess. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Then there is always the 3 plane group that flies right by the bandit ripping you a new one when you ask for help... and then they say... "Watch it one!! Youve got one on your six!!" as you are going down in multiple pieces from that 108 cannon shot. Or the command to "Return to base immediately!!" after you are a fireball in the sky... It is good mind you.. the best out there.. but sometimes the friendly AI ticks me off still. I wont be sharing any beer with those guys.....

Another thing I do if I want a good laugh is "fly" the Mistel single mission that came with AEP, put the Mistel on autopilot, go to external view and just watch the show. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif

The darned thing will veer off course run into a hangar or a parked JU-52 and take the entire base out !! Including my FW-190 buddies waiting patiently for their take off clearance.

I feel your pain. I only ever land my plane myself if it is severely damaged. Otherwise it is autopilot and 8X, call me soft if you will. I've had my share of spontaneous faceplants for no good reason.

Recently, when I had landed my plane myself due to engine damage, I was sitting there, off the runway, smoking engine, waiting to see if the good ole boys (my AI) would finish the mission for me (alright I'm soft) when a Ju-52 lands, taxies my way, turns right at me and ploughs me into the dirt like a sack of fertilizer. Executed for leaving the fray early I suppose.

That has GOT to be the funniest thing I've ever heard. LOL... I'm dying here. I'm just getting into doing my own take offs and landings but this was absolutely amazing to me...

It's not corrected. I flew a BoE mission in a P47 last night and, whilst on the tail of a FW190, was shot down by one of my teammates.
After restarting the mission (as you do in virtual life!), I shot down a 190 only to see my AI teammates go after it in usual fashion.

And yes, FB does report being v2.04 on startup.

Cheers
Norris

I had one the other night where my group , on the way to a ground attack target, we run into a U-2V. We are in Gladiators (Finnish) they all engage the U-2V the pilot of the U-2V is killed and the plane is flying without a pilot, but is on a course that keeps it in the air. The flight would not engage the "dead" plane, but they would not proceede to the target until it hit the ground, I had to get behind him and shoot him down the rest of the way to continue the mission. I suppose if I lead the flights that would help, but thats silly.

I have another one where I was flying as the germans on a ground attack mission. There are 8 of us and we come across 2 YAKs and EVERYONE drops their bombs to engage the yaks, I shot them both down , but since everyone else dropped bombs we could not complete the mission.

I NEVER let the AI land my plane for me. That`s almost asking to lose your pilot.

As for stopping AI from attacking fighters when on a bombing mission. The only way I`ve found is to ORDER them to `rejoin` then they WILL stay on the bombing course with you until you order them to attack the target. This is how I`ve succeded in many fighter bombing attacks.

Of course you must be LEADER and if the enemy do get to you they`ll shoot down everyone, so it`s up to you to decide `DO WE ATTACK THE GROUND TARGET OR ABORT AND FIGHT THE FIGHTERS?`

Sometimes I think we expect a little too much from our AI friends.

Anyway, regarding AI/offline improvements, I sent Oleg a long list of what could be fixed, of course, politely, without whining. But of course, no response, nothing happened.

I guess the bellowing FM and DM , etc whiners were much easier to hear and respond to. It`s pretty obvious Oleg hears that first over offliners. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I'll add my little story:

So, I'm sitting on the tarmac after a VERY successful COOP mission waiting for my squad to land. Engine off, parked next to some vehicles for about 2-3 min. just hanging out and watching the show when the truck next to me starts moving... I'm thinking "surely he won't head my way" but as you might have guessed the truck makes a 180 deg turn and rams my plane! First hit removes my wingtip as I'm franticly trying to crank the engine. SOB backes up and hits me again collapsing my right main gear dropping my right side to the ground. Now I'm in Ctrl+E mode trying to save my pilot when he backes up and hits me the third time detonating my broken bird and my pilot who was just getting out of the cockpit. Everyone had a good laugh at my expense.

I remember a while back setting up a mission in FMB with four B-17's. I made them all indivduals and put them close together, but not too close.

Every single time I started the mission one would pull up, semi-stall, fall back down into a second. The other two (IIRC) were on the outside and tried each time to swap sides for some weird reason and they'd crash occasionally. After a dozen attempts at moving them apart I finally managed to get it to work by deleting two of themhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Not really a funny story, but anywayhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
