Solution is to start saving your money. The game comes out in 4 months. Plenty of time to save some money for that dvd drive and the game. Or you can find a friend with a dvd drive in there computer and drive them insane playing the game day and night till you finish the game.

But in the end, there is alot of programs out there moving to dvd, so it would be good to just make the tecno jump and buy a dvd drive.

Around 1997-1998. I believe Dell started offering a DVD-ROM drive as an option instead of CD about 5 years ago. I've had a combo DVD-reader/CD-burner for about 2 years now. There have been games offered with both CD and DVD versions for about 3-4 years, I think.

There are many DVD-ROM drives available now for under $40 US.

I'm about to order a new box, and I think I'm going to skip the flat screen. My understanding is that flat screens have only one "native" resolution, so CRTs are still better for gaming. My mind is open though, so somebody can change it if they get the evidence to me before I actually press the "order" button. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I bought a standard 42x DVD/CD drive back in November for US$50.00 ... and I have seen them for as little as US$35.00 only recently.

There is no reason to be upset that you would have to buy a DVD drive these days ... for they are as common as having a CD-ROM drive now.

Perhaps the ending has not yet been written!

Yes, DVD drives are not expensive anymore, you can get them as low as 55 bucks at Best Buy, and probably for slightly cheaper at newegg.com though I haven't checked. The only thing I'm concentrating on is putting together a box that can run Uru at max detail and pretty high resolution. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Possible? We'll see...

Oh it is definately possible , as I have just done so myself . I also bought a new DVD-rom ( my old one didnt match the new case ) for 49.99 .While I was at it I ditched my old CD-RW and bought a DVD-RW as well . That was a bit more expensive at 149.99 but there are different price availabilities for that too , anywhere from about 100 - 300 bucks .

My new 3 gig P4 with 1 gig memory and a GeForce FX 5950 Ultra runs Uru real sweet - max everything .

Are things always that cheap in the US and Canada?

I reckon a DVD drive would cost around $70 (US) Here in New Zealand.

Hmmm mind you, by September, i might be a able to get something REALLY cheap. Who knows?

At least there's PotS for the meantime.

Those pictures....

Here in Brazil a DVD drive costs around $60 (US). And a DVD-CDRW $100.

That's not cheap, but not very expensive either.

Moreover, chances are you won't have to upgrade your video card for M4 -- since it's prerendered, all the stunning water and particle effects can be produced without pixel shaders etc. So spend the bucks you saved by not having to upgrad that on the DVD drive http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

New monitor has arrived. I am playing a totally different Uru here. With 1280 x 1024 @ 85Hz I can see things I never saw before. Shorah, What kind of evidence do you need?
I've had an LCD 15" monitor from the beginning and I get the screen size of a standard 17" without the clutter.
I have room on the monitor shelf for my modem as well as my mike.
I personally would never trade it and it has worked beautifully for the complete series of Myst through the XP.
I have played numerous other games as well and the LCD monitor has worked flawlessly.

Yeah, I'm an LCD enthusiast too. I think they got a bad rap among gamers with earlier models which were prone to "ghosting" with rapid animation, but that shouldn't be a problem with any current model. And it would really only have been a problem with shooters or racing games anyway.

In addition to what melas said, there's no possibility of flicker, which causes eyestrain, and it's much better for the earth -- not only does an LCD use a lot less power, a CRT monitor contains shielding which causes environmental damage when discarded and makes it very costly to recycle.

As for the resolution issue, it's really only a problem with small text, where you have a lot of one-pixel-sized lines; you should be able to run games at a lower resolution without bad effects, in my experience. And this should only be an issue with older games; recent releases all support the common LCD resolutions.

My current 18.1 incher has lasted through three different computers -- I've had more value out of it than any other component.

And it must have been 1997 becuase Riven DVD came out in 1998. Plus it WAS 1997!

Srikandi and Melas,

That's good news to hear, I just ordered a Sony SDM-HX73/B 17" LCD for the computer I have been trying to finish building.

I'd hate to think I went the wrong direction.
I got the best deal I could find on it ($499.00) most places are asking about $620.00 for the same monitor.

Now I just have to find the ATI X800Pro video card and I'll have a computer that I won't have to upgrde for a long, long time.

I will probably have to Play POTS on my wifes computer though since that's what I have been using for years and that's where Uru is now. (I don't know how to copy the large files to move them to my new computer), her computer has a CDRW and a Zip 100 but the files won't copy to either one.(too large for the Zip).

I know I could always start all over on my new computer but I'm not sure if the key code on the original Uru will work on another computer since I have already registered it once.

Okay, I think I've bored evryone enough, sorry I got so far off the track. So how about them Padres?

Yes but do flatscreens have only one native resolution? Because Laptop LCDs do - for example if its 800x600 and you set it to 640x480, it'll go small or be badly stretched. If you set it to 1024x768 you'll either have to scroll around the screen, or once again, it'll be stretched.

As a graphic designer and gamer, I just have to throw in my 2 cents about CRT monitors. They may be bulky but they still have better color reproduction and sharper pictures than any LCD/Plasma. I know the pictures are getting better and better on LCDs, but if you want to see it the way designers intended, you'll be better off with a CRT. Again, just my 2. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

LCD monitors do have a "native" resolution and it's always best to play games at that resolution. But if you have to play a game at a lower resolution, the monitor will scale the graphics to fit the native resolution.

In my experience, the LCD monitors for desktops do a much better job at displaying at lower resolutions than laptop LCDs.

I love my NEC 19" LCD and would not trade it for anything. I find the colors to be much richer than a CRT, and it also causes much less eyestrain.

Also, in my area I have seen DVD drives available for free after a mail in rebate ($20-$30 before rebates).

Well after playing URU one night and having my vid card explode(the card made a good whiz, crackle and pop befor the horid electronic smell hit my nose). So in the event of fixing my computer, i desided to get the new Nvidia gf 6800 standard card and a new 19" crt flat screen monitor(since my old moitor was haveing horible color flickering).

I now can play SWG and Doom 3 with ease and the graphics in uru are so much better. And i even upgraded my DVD drive(dont you just love doing upgrades to a computer when it goes BOOM).

Well i cant wait for the game to ship.
