Ubisoft has also shared details on specific plans for its lineup, such as an “exclusive look” at Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flags and “never-before-seen Watch Dogs content”. The full overview – including pre-order incentives – is posted below.

PAX East attendees that visit the Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag fully-enclosed theater will be treated to an exclusive look at the newest Assassin’s Creed world set during the Golden Age of Pirates. Meet our new hero, the brash and brutal Edward Kenway, a pirate trained by assassins. Session attendees will also receive a special-edition Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag inflatable cutlass sword (while supplies last) and can take sharable pictures in a photo booth featuring our new hero. Attendees will also have the opportunity to see a new demo of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist, the next blockbuster title in the critically acclaimed Tom Clancy franchise. Special operative Sam Fisher is back and in control of the newly formed Fourth Echelon as he seeks to combat a group of terrorists behind “The Blacklist,” a series of escalating attacks on U.S. interests.

Never-before-seen Watch Dogs content will be unveiled in a closed theater presentation at the booth. All theater attendees will receive a PAX exclusive Watch Dogs lanyard (while supplies last). Players will assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a new type of vigilante who, with the help of his smartphone, will use his ability to hack into Chicago’s central operating system (ctOS) and control almost every element of the city. Aiden will be able to tap into the city’s omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control systems such as traffic lights or public transportation to stop a chase, and more. The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon.
Consumer Booths

PAX East attendees who visit Ubisoft’s booth can play some of this year’s most highly anticipated digital PC titles like ShootMania® Storm, Might & Magic® Heroes® VI Shades of Darkness and Might & Magic® Duel of Champions Online Card Game, also available on iOS.
Additionally, attendees can experience hands on demos of Spartacus Legends™ playing favorite combat moments from the show or; live the epic journey of a ruthless bounty hunter with Call of Juarez® Gunslinger on Microsoft Xbox Live® Arcade and Sony PlayStation Network™.

Pre-Order Incentives
Attendees can also take advantage of pre-order incentives for a few of Ubisoft’s biggest games at the show. Pre-orders for Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Blacklist, Watch Dogs or ShootMania Storm include a free t-shirt onsite (while supplies last)

I expect 'with the power of the jedi' - maybe not 100% correct...

smartphones are now almost a full fledged PC in most respects.. and sometime in the future, it's highly likely they will be..

That's a current gen console limitation - not the engine ;)

The PC game uses the same engine and has much better shadows, Watch_Dogs on current gen consoles may also vary from footage shown ;)

Looking forward to watch dogs and AC4. I know we won't get any gameplay for AC4 but it'll be good to hear what people have to think after they see the closed demo (assuming there is one). If the Watch Dogs demos really are unscripted then wow... Hopefully there'll be a new one at PAX.

You are aware that the first two Call of Juarez parts (which were fantastic, never played the third one, but it is pretty terrible from what I've heard) both came out before Red Dead Redemption..? Also, there's a big difference between a third-person-open-world-Cowboy-game and a first-person-shooter with stealth-elements. Also, laddergoat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggB33d0BLcY).

I love Bound in Blood so much and I might get the newest one, if it's really going back to its roots. But for now, when it comes to Ubisoft-games, WatchDogs is at the top. Still not entirely sure what to think of Black Flag and for the first time ever I'm really not that hyped for an AC sequel. Ah well, time will tell..

pirate1802
03-20-2013, 04:32 PM
The Third CoJ was an insult to the franchise. I want to forget it even existed. The first two games were so beautiful, then this.. Good thing they realized their mistake and went back to where their strength lies.

Also is it just me or the graphics of the new CoJ seems a little cell-shaded?

Yeah, slightly, not as overdone as Borderlands though. Looks quite good in my opinion, not too cartoon-ish, yet somewhat special.

there is just no way another western game could top RDR. Unless Rockstar makes another one.

I fail to see how a game with completely different gameplay and story needs to compete with a completely different one just because they take place in a similar setting.
Would you compare Portal and Half Life because they are set in the universe? Would you rather not play Black Flag because the Monkey Island franchise can probably never be topped by another Pirate-game?
"Western game" is just a label to categorize the typical atmosphere, landscapes and buildings and nothing else. And Call of Juarez is great fun.

AC4 looked pretty fun, a little hard to judge since it was a cinematic gameplay trailer and not just straight up gameplay.Environments looked colorful and nice (like the screenshots). There was also a giant exotic whale that breached the surface and looked cool.At one point Edward stabbed a shark with his cutlass and it pulled him around the water for a bit haha.

Sounds like he wrote it hastily. Plus he said it was hard to judge since it was a cinematic gameplay trailer. But Loomer, being the fan that he is, sounds weird saying that the next AC game just looks "pretty fun". Also, the part about Edward stabbing the shark sounds like a QTE. *sigh*

Over the course of his presentation, which amounted to covering a few Powerpoint slides and showing brief stints of gameplay, McDevitt kept reiterating the same point: Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be as open and seamless as possible.
The action will take place in the Nassau region of the Caribbean, and players will fill the boots of Edward Kenway, a pirate trained by Assassins and the father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin’s Creed III. You’ll encounter several historical pirates and relive actual events that went down in this part of the world during “the Golden Age of Pirates.”
But, again, McDevitt was insistent upon stressing how seamless things will be. His example? You could spot a gentleman in a city bragging about how much money he has back at home on his plantation. You can tail him to the port of that city, follow him from a distance in your ship and make your way onto his plantation. You can kill him and steal his stuff, and all of that goes down without a single loading screen.
If Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is truly that seamless, this game could be incredible. We’ll have more as it comes.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag was unplayable at PAX East this year, but we were shown some pre-alpha gameplay footage with video commentary from Creative Director Jean Guesdon and his team at Ubisoft Montreal about what motivated them to take the series to the sea.

Guesdon said that the idea behind making the protagonist in Assassin’s Creed 4 a pirate was the fact that it was an incredibly interesting time in history with compelling characters (like George Washington and Leonardo da Vinci before him, Blackbeard the pirate will the screen in Black Flag). No light was shed on why there would be a chronological hop back in time in going from AC3 to AC4, but the Ubisoft developers made it seem as though the decision to make the game about pirate was based more on gameplay than anything else. They made it clear that their angle was that the life and times of the pirate would provide an excellent context for the gameplay they wanted to deliver.

We were told that “exploration is key” as discovering islands on the Jackdaw, Kenway’s sea vessel, and traversing on jungles treetops would be a new aspect to this game. Exploration will be a focus point in Black Flag.

This time it looks like your brotherhood will be more of a living entity. Crew members are expected to die in this game as you brave storms on the Jackdaw and board enemy ships. Doing things like starting fights in pubs to earn people’s respect will help fill any empty spots on your deck.

Since writing my Assassin’s Creed 3 review, I’ve come to realize that people who did dislike the game found some haven in the naval missions. If you’re in this camp, you’ll be happy to hear that there will be new enemy ships including a new Man o’ War, a ship that’s been armed to the masts with canons on both sides.

One can expect that the sailing mechanics will be more fleshed out in Black Flag. One especially tantalizing mechanic here involves boarding an enemy ship. Two pirate vessels going at it in the middle of the sea immediately turns into a mini-environment where Kenway leads his men into battle. Once the planks are down and Kenway and his men have boarded, you’re free to climb masts and jump off sails to perform your flashy kills.

New to the series will be underwater gameplay. The player will be taking Kenway deep underwater to look for treasure in ship wrecks and maybe take in the occasional shark fight. And yes, this does mean that hunting will make its comeback. Expect to find things like shark and whale on the menu this time around.

Before being hit with the pre-alpha gameplay footage (which I honestly wouldn’t be able to pick apart from the current Black Flag commercials out), we were told that at the end of the day, Kenway is an assassin. So dual cutlasses and four pistols aside, he will be using hidden blades. We were told that stealth will be making its way back into the Assassin’s Creed formula as we were treated to footage of Kenway stalking enemies in the darkness and from jungle treetops.

Given that there was nothing available to play this year, it’s far too early to tell whether Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will be a critical success or if it will just ride the laurels of its name like 3 before it. Boarding ships and steal missions definitely appeal to me, but more hunting and sailing wasn’t exactly what I would have hoped for. Still, if it’s one thing the Assassin’s Creed franchise has done well, it’s secretly force-feeding me history lessons. The historical context, colorful characters, and exploration associated with pirates has some of my attention.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag will be hitting the shelves on October 29, 2013.

Also, seems like we didn't miss much then if it was just cinematics. Maybe they did that because last year loads of people got annoyed that we couldn't see the bunker hill shiz

Yeah, I mean it's one thing to 'reward' people for attending, but not everyone has the time and money, so why should they get 'punished' for not? This way seems fairer, a few glimpses, but no major sequences.

So far not much that wasn't known allready. I'm very curious how the world will be structured. I mean the entire Cuban coastline+ some more locations. There must be some kind of catch. Since they keep talking about how seamless the world is, my guess is that it will be a bit fragmented in how it allows you to explore on land :p. Doesn't have to be a bad thing, but I'm very curious. Then I'd obv like to see one of the new (presumably) more open missions play out.

loomer979

Either the demo/game looked mediocre or loomer is horrible at description.

The game looked fine, let me explain my tweets. First you have to realize that I had a very rare moment where my cell phone data was actually going through and I was just blasting some quick impressions. I didn't realize people were expecting me to do a detailed description broken up into a ton of 140 character chunks haha. The second thing to understand is that there wasn't really anything shown that hasn't been described across all the interviews that are out there right now. This year's presentation involved some high level talking points with Jean, Darby, Ashraf (cut with some brief gameplay snippets), followed by a couple minutes of cinematic gameplay at the end. By cinematic gameplay I mean something kind of like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ke_1yd1nAE rather than the detailed walkthrough of a mission like we got last year where Alex played through Bunker Hill (HUD and all), while pausing at various moments to point out various features/changes in detail.

This year's presentation had much less new info. If you take all the existing screenshots, imagine a 5 second snippet gameplay that they were taken from, and then mash them all together you pretty much have what was shown at PAX this year. It didn't seem worth trying to summarize in tweets, so I focused instead on a couple visual moments that stood out to me (mainly the huge whale breaching the surface and Edward stabbing the shark). If I had tried to summarize the whole thing it probably would have ended up pretty much like the sidequesting article linked here earlier: http://www.sidequesting.com/2013/03/pax-east-2013-assassins-creed-4-black-flag-set-to-explore-some-uncharted-territory/

I hope that makes sense. Also, yes I am horrible at description :P

*sigh*

Well, I actually think it looks pretty cool but I'm trying to be a little more cautious after last year where I felt a lot of the trailers, walkthroughs, etc for AC3 didn't end up being accurate representations of the final game experience. Also, like I alluded to earlier there weren't enough new details to form a concrete opinion on for me. There's stuff I'm worried about like how the heavy naval emphasis will affect the feel of the game, but I don't think I'll have the answer to that until I've actually played the final product. And yeah I assume the shark stabbing is a QTE, which I'm not crazy about but visually it looked pretty cool.

is the guy to the left esco ?

Esco couldn't make it to PAX unfortunately.

Also seems like random events will be more prominent too, sort of like the arbitrary events that popped up on route when playing RDR (or at least I hope).

FWIW, Darby wants to emphasize that that article was about "seamlessness", not random events. https://twitter.com/DarbyMcDevitt/status/315253932840607744

Can we please confirm tree-running?

The only real tree-running was Edward air assassinating some people from a branch similar to this screenshot: http://static9.cdn.ubi.com/en-US/images/AC4BF_JungleFreeRunning_1200x642tcm1986207.jpg

I don't know if I would expect full-on tree navigation the way Connor could (I think they already dispelled that in an interview)? These branches really function more like re-skinned beams.

I have googled and googled but I still can't find any even reasonable summary of the gameplay trailer footage shown at Pax East. The closest is the Loomer tweet about how you can hang on to a whale with your cutlass.

That was a shark he stabbed with a cutlass, not a whale. Though what you said does conjure up some nice AC/Shadow of the Colossus mashups in my brain :D.

Thanks for the write up! I guess the fragmented style of the demo is why we haven't seen any summaries of what was shown. As you said, it was "good", but not great. The plot itself was interesting, albeit sort of forgettable. Moreover, Ezio's development in ACR seemed almost non-existent, which irked me a bit to see Ezio not develop when he is viewing the memories of the great assassin Altaïr.

Yeah I've been wanting to know how to do this too (as well as get my avatar on Initiates sense it doesn't work still)

Thank you for noticing. My last one was cringe-worthy beyond superlatives. This is one is more similar to what I usually traverse forums and discussions with; simply "Frost".

You can't. I just used my PS3 username instead.

Just a friendly reminder to all the PAX visitors we have in the forums. Any talk about filming what you was by every means a JOKE, so please do not do it. Here is what happened to a poor, naïve guy that tried to film the shown video.
"I tried brother...in an unfortunate turn if events I was caught filming and taking pictures the people at the Assassins creed booth made me delete all my pics and videos...and I got kicked out"

Again, were kidding around earlier. Do NOT do it.

To anyone from Pax, post the videos here, you will get banned, but we don't mind!

Already asked 3 AC devs to leak footage, they either said they would be fired or didn't reply :P

And you were surprised at that..?

tbh any footage shown, is for visitors only, I know feel entitled to it, but sorry to say, you're not.
