View Full Version : P-38 engine fire question:

I've noticed that if I take critical damage to an engine and it catches fire, I can pull all the throttle out, feather and turn off the engine and go into a high speed dive which will generally put out the fire.

Now, after a while the fire graphics will occaisonally come back and sometimes go away repeatedly as I continue to try and fly my way home...

Is this a feature or bug?

(And, does anyone else have a better engine-fire procedure/check-list than what I am using?)

P.S. Should I be able to pull appx 400kph on one engine with the other on fire/destroyed?

If the 38 (haven't flown it yet) has mixture control then cut it to zero. That will put out a fire.

It isn't just a graphical bug, but the engine actually lighting up again. If you're lucky you can make it home before it explodes!

The fact that it goes out when you shut down the engine is not a bug...the fact that if it does light up again and for long enough it doesn't explode is a problem.

B-17 pilots would do that often when they couldnt get out engine fires on their planes. They would enter a dive to put the fire out and then also turn off the engine.

Of course with a single engine fighter, shutting down the engine suddenly doesn't make the fire any more life threatning. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

just dont fly n00bie planes like the P-38 & you wont have to put up with a overmoddeled DM

I have noticed the flaring of fire, but have not once had my engine blow. I don't know that it's a bug per-say (maybe the combination of flaring fires, AND it not blowing is), because feathering the prop and cutting the engine should be more effective than the effects of which you can have in a single-engine prop.

Ive had the engine explode on me at least twice in a p-38. it just happend to me about an hour ago in fact! it started with an engine flame up and went bad, real bad! I dont think the 38 has manual mixture controls in the game. it should but it doesnt.

Hey Skii_. 'Round these parts, anything that is any good at all is "œber", and if you shoot someone down, then you are automatically flying a "n00b plane".

The P-38 does have an extreme DM though. As does the Yak3. Both eat Mk103 fire like candy and ask for more. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

Re: the fires, I made a post about this in the ORR. All engines do this. Even the turbines, and it makes even less sense on those as there is less combustibles present when shut off and throttled back, and, the air flows through through the things ensuring they'd be cooled well below the ignition point in relatively short order. Yet, if you slow down, you burst into flames again.

No one is using extinguisher? I've had varying success, not sure at times if it does anything, may be aircraft specific, dunno. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

I have had an engine catch fire and I switched it off & feathered it. I made it about half way back to base before it caught fire again.

I figured maybe it would go out again and then.... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/784.gif

i keep both engines on in dive, get speed up quicker. this may or maynot be betterhttp://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
