Hi guys, I have just got a 6800GT and to be honest it's a beast at moving graphics in FB but I'm disappointed with the plane textures. They look just the same as they did with my Ti4400. The water effects are now running nicely at 1600x1200 with water=2, but I'm surprised that the plane textures look smooth and bland, and not as nice as they do in other posts, for example look at the spit in this screengrab:

http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums?q=Y&a=tpc&s=400102&f=23110283&m=573107155&p=2

I have the sea and sky and cloud shadows no problem, all the video options are maxed out including stencil buffer on etc, but the planes just don't impress.
So what I'm looking for is any help on how to get the best looks out of this game as I'm sure there is something I'm not getting right.

My specs should be more tha adequate too!

P4 3.2c
1GB Corsair Twinx 3700
Nvidia XFX 6800GT DDR3
Sata Raid 250GB drive + 2x160GB Maxtor drives on PATA
MSI Neo 875P FSI2R (latst Bios 2.2)

As an example I ran 3dmark 2001 SE 1024x768 with no AA or AS, all setting default and got a score of 18,772
With 3D Mark 2003 1024x768 with no AA or AS, all setting default and got a score of 10,721.
I think these are more than acceptable.

I then did two further tests in FB. Running the Black Death track, with manual view disabled and time compression disabled I ran the game with no AA and no AS, but image quality set to best quality in Nvidia settings. Water=2 as-well. At 1600x1200x32bit colour I got an average fps of 23.

I then ran it exactly the same as above with 1024x768x32 bit colour and got an average of 54fps. I just don't think these are good enough, but maybe I'm wrong.
So any of you guys out there who have any views or ideas about how I can get better plane textures (more detailed) and a way of increasing FPS ( I don't want to lose the water....it's beautiful), can you give me a post please. Cheers, Neil.

Well put on a CUSTOM skin (a big one http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif )
1024x1024 pixel that is http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I think you are comparing to standard 512x512 skins http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Get some custom ones from www.il2skins.com (http://www.il2skins.com)

Yes I can do that, and hopefully that should sort the planes out, but do you think the fps I'm getting in the original post are good enough. I just don't think they are myself?

I get similar results with my MSI 6800 Ultra, P4 3.4, Corsair TwinX pc4400 (55-60 fps avg) so your numbers may not be off. My 3Dmark2k3 was 12,108 with no AA, no AF at 1024x768x32.

Well I have specs that don't even come close lol

But to get a better fps - loose the extra trees - they're a huge resource hug - so "Forest=1"

Water does not count that much http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Its the skin. I only have a 5950 and at 1024 you can tell the difference.

Guys thanks for such a quick response. Nice to know that my GT is up there in the Ultra ball- park. The forest=1 sounds like a good tip, but will it affect my 'perfect' setting in video options? I can't face losing the water.it's soooo nice. Any other tips like this would be really appreciated, cheers.

I am running the 6800 standard, though I own and eVGA card and I think I will make the upgrade to the GT for another 90 bucks to get the extra pipes and mem. I actually have no complaints about my card though, th IQ is great, this is the first time I can look at the images made by ATI and nVidia with a few X AA and AF on and not see a big increase in image quality in the ATI. Now in fact I like the water and terrain of the nVidia better for the sims I use with one exception that shadow detail is a little strange in LOMAC.

In regard to your in game settings you should check out your driver level settings. right click on the desktop, then go to properties->Settings->advanced->GeForce6800GT->Performance&Quality Settings and then set you Antialiasing, anisotropic filtering, Vsync, andImage quality as you want it. You probably have the IQ slider at either performance or quality, but you can go to high quality with the newer nVidia drivers.

In addition, IL-2 Manager used to afford much greater control over the in game image quality. . . I am not sure there is a compatible version today, but I figure there is, and it is cpable of adding higher settings than you can using the game interface.

thanks for the tip. I hate the way the trees look from far. less trees = better looking game.

since you like the water so much, just play pacific maps only.

and it's not whether you are getting 25 fps or 80, it's how even it is. I'd rahter play a smooth 25 than a spikey and dippy 80 any day.

you can probably get bigger numbers with vsynch turned off. but you'll get tearing.

Thanks for that guys. I have to say that at the mo I'm running it at 1600x1200 with as and af off, but the effects are still stunning. Playing the desert map, flying from the island base, I can see the mountains of the desert clearly and planes are visible from such a long way away it makes it easy to fix a target. I also, for the first time, saw an effect I'd never seen before which was looking from the desert hills, out to sea, I saw a plane against the sea and there was a definate heat haze in the background, with the plane sharp against it...brought a tear to my eye. Love this game, cheers, Neil.
