View Full Version : It's a shame IL-2 included in FB

I think it is a real shame that FB included everything from IL2. I'm seeing brand new boxes of IL2 all over the place, cheap.

It's just such a shame to see all those great original IL2 sims selling for peanuts. Too bad Oleg couldn't have worked through processes to require users of more current versions to have to have the earlier versions if they wanted apply earlier IL2 version aircraft.

Maybe that's the way of things, or it has to be.

So, if somebody is looking to get started with the IL2-FB series, who needs a demo. All they need to do is pick up a cheap IL2 somewhere can't beat the price.

yep, he's right, original IL2 games are selling at very low prices here in the UK. I picked my copy up in March or April last year for 7.99. And I have seen it for less in other places.

True. And CFS3 still stays at a stubborn 30 or so. The mind boggles! Just goes to show that the more expensive a product is does not mean that it`s any better!

In his excitement to get Ordnance info for Oleg, Hawker made a bit of a mess at the local Library....

You guys are missing the point. If I was Oleg I would be flooding the stores with cheap copiees of IL-2. Why? Because 99% of the people who bought FB and Aces first. Get 'em hooked and then reel them in on the newest thing.

When a noob posts a question on this forum, what is the one thing EVERYONE here tells him when he asks what is FB? "Run, don't walk to the store, run and get FB and Aces!!!" Thats what we tell them.

Oleg has made all the money he will ever make on IL-2. It is a dead product as far as revenue generation goes. Now all it is good for is to get people interested in his brand of flight sims. Maybe 10 - 20 or 30% of those people will check out FB and Aces. Oleg is no dummy!!!

I remember there was a report/video from the flight sim show in Birmingham, England in late 2002. Oleg and Ian Boys were describing the new features of the yet-to-be released 'Forgotten Battles.' A question came from the audience, "Will there be a demo for Forgotten Battles?" Oleg laughed and answered (paraphrased), "I think IL-2 is the demo for Forgotten Battles ..."

The point is, Forgotten Battles was originally going to be just an expansion to IL-2, but 1C:MG improved the base game so much that FB had to be released as a stand-alone. That irritated many people who already owned IL-2 (at the time) and has continued to confuse newcomers, but ultimately having a cheap 'taster' version of the series has brought people into the IL-2 world. Some people are still finding their way to Forgotten Battles through cheap or free copies of IL-2, perhaps from a friend; I believe that CH joysticks still come with a free copy of IL-2.

These are good points Zeus-Cat, but I would disagree. The gaming population has a very low tolerance for the seemingly excessive patches that are usually necessary for a sim as complex as IL2:FB as well as the "specific" order in which they are to be installed.

I'd wager that many new IL2:FB recruits are scared away every day when they see the steps necessary sometimes to get their rig ang game in sync enough to fully enjoy all that IL2:FB offers.

Anytime I have the opportunity, I try to take the time to personally help a potential new pilot and guide them throught the frustrating process that will take them to simmers nirvana and on more than one occassion have been told that had they done it themselves they likely would have said screw it and done something more intuitive to set up...but alas, once they're there they're ours forever!

So to respectfully contradict your assessment, I say dispose of all th9ose old IL2 discs and just revel in the joy that is IL2:FB:Aces.

Just my opinion.

I picked up a combo pack just recently with IL2 original, Flankers 2.5 and Silent Hunters II for $20. The only thing that came of it was I immediatly wanted to buy Forgotten Battles and when I saw they were about to release an expansion I pre-ordered the Gold Pack. Then I gave my copy of IL2 to my friend who is now thinking of buying the Gold Pack also. Chill out and let the people who know marketing do thier thing.
