Newbie question: landing/takeoff in FW190? Can't see the ground looking forward, how's it done?

Taking a proper approach helps, using rudder to see the runway is a possibility. And practise. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

It can be tricky when you can't see where you're going. You must look out to the sides & try to stay on course. Take off is not as hard as landing - just makes sure the distance to the "rough" outside the runway stays the same.
On your approach you must settle for an object to aim for when getting closer. Pay attention to what is around the airfield. Drop the nose now & then to see if you're on the right way & pull up. Once you're over the runway - look to the side to see where you are & touch down.

"So when Diogenes perceived that he was greatly excited and quite keyed up in mind with expectancy, he toyed with him and pulled him about in the hope that somehow he might be moved from his pride and thirst for glory and be able to sober up a little. For he noticed that at one time he was delighted, and at another grieved at the same thing, and that his soul was as unsettled as the weather at the solstices when both rain and sunshine come from the very same source."

It's actually easier in RL to land any a/c than it is in the sim, as you rely heavily on periferal vision to guage you're hight. You can overcome this by yawing with rudder so as to see ahead then kick it straight as you flair, and watch your altimeter.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!

For take off, judicious use of wide view. I'll be back shortly with a track download for both takeoff and landing.

Fw190 takeoff & landing track here (http://members.optusnet.com.au/tully_78th/fw190takeofflanding.zip)

If you're veering off course on take off, use rudder to steer towards the side where the runway edge is higher up the windshield frame. Be gentle, it doesn't take a lot.

For landing, it's mostly about getting speed and altitude right at the start of the approach, last minute adjustments are much more difficult. Allow yourself a longish approach to begin with, you can shorten it once you get a feel for what speeds and glide angles work best.
