I'm going to start a thread on airfields that I hope can help the designers. Feel free to add good pictures, preferably with dates, so that different layouts can be seen. Of particular importance would be revetments, AA positions, and other useful features for FMB work http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

One thing to notice in most PTO airfields is the dispersement areas. Fields are rough, and the revetments are spread out, and in the trees.

Aussie airfields - at Least Higgins Field please!

We at least need Higgins field at the top of Cape York, if no other Aussie airfields are planned for PF. It is very close to Horn Island and Port Moresby Paupa New Guinea.

This would also be a fitting tribute to Flight Lieutenant Brian Hartley Higgins also known as "Tubby" Higgins, who flew extensively with RAAF 11 Catalina Sqn. Tubby was also an Operational Training Unit instructor with RAAF 3 OTU and was killed in air operations during a rough water landing on 25 May 1943.

Rough water landings were an extremely difficult and dangerous exercise involving great piloting skill and experience by landing a Catalina/PBY in very rough swells to rescue downed pilots.

This required angling the aircraft and dropping the tail in the water so that the aircraft almost stood up on its tail at around 30 degrees. Then quickly reducing/almost cutting the throttle - so that aircraft then radically dropped with a bounce, then resuming to level flight. The throttles were then slightly increased to maintain level flight whilst landing between the waves. A difficult endeavor requiring great piloting skill by any standard.

There is an excellent map of Higgins field that be clicked on and exapnded at the following link: http://home.st.net.au/~dunn/airfields/higginsfield.htm
This could be used to design/develop Higgins field in PF.

Low level shot showing off typical revetments for bombers. It would be nice if PF airfields were left pretty empty as far as buildings are concerned, but maybe just such revetments for japanese fields. Do ground objects block LOS for bomb blasts in game now?

Heheh. I have more pictures to scan, but it seems a waste of time since the PF mapmakers apparently specifically avoid lookign at anything real http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Actually, to be fair some of the small islands (Wake, Midway, Palau) have really well done basic airfield shapes. The dispersals on the other hand could use some work. That and the fact that the trees almost universally need to hem in the airfields.

I was looking for some pictures of heavy AAA batteries for mission building purposes.

Tater-SW-
07-24-2005, 08:54 AM
American, or japanese?

Japanese seem to have groups heavy AAA into 6 gun batteries pretty close together. They liked dummies as well, so it might make sense to add in some extra revetments for them with no guns.

Didn't I give you the link to that thread I posted at Il2center with pics I had gathered of airfields in the PNG/Rabual area? Maybe someone else. Anyways, lots more cool pics above and beyond what I had gathered, but unfortunately even what I had was available well before PF publication and I don't think utilized.

PF coral atoll and volcanic islands are extremely well done -- and very fast rendering performance. Bravo to Luthier on these types of islands.

Nice pics. I like that May 1942 LAE pic, and gives me something to visualize Saburo/Caiden writing about flying from Lae in summer 1942.
