I'm trying to train on how to be effective with guns. I'm flying well, but cant hit ANYTHING. Tried using simple quick missions against friendly bombers to get accustom to guns. There seems to be two weapons on the bf109. A nose gun, and wing guns. The wing guns seem to have xplosive rounds? As they cause more damage.. I think. The cannon...well it seems useless. I stay behind a bomber, and just open the hell up on a bomber engine from it's six o'clock...FOR DAYS!!! And all I can see is some lame as hell fuel leak at best. Eventually it lands on field as it is out of fuel. HARDLY the results I see online, or from training missions and clips.
Then I take a me262A out for grins on the same quick mission. BOOM! the guns in the jet fighter rip the **** out of all the aircraft. Using short bursts as well. So, what is the difference between the two planes weapons, and what are they called. For example what are the wing guns in bf109, and what are in its nose? The same with the me262A please. Although it looks like all guns in the me262A are in it's nose.
Cheers

BoB Hurricanes - how did they do it?

Take a look at the above post on the next page from 7/7: it may help. You may simply have your convergence set too wide, and you may not be getting close enough. The 109's cannon are deadly. You just have to be sure you are in range; the shells lose speed and drop off fast. Try 300 meters for gun convergence and 150 for cannons. You'll find many prior posts and answers by much more expert gunners than I am, as you look through the posts.

The earlier 109 (E) models had one cannon (20mm explosive shells) in each wing and two small caliber machineguns on top of the engine. The Later models have one cannon (caliber depending on model) in the propeller hub and two machineguns on top of the engine.

It is rarely very effective to fire at an aircraft from DEAD 6 o'clock. From this angle there are many thins (and from this angle they are thick) in the way of the more vulnerable areas, e.g. to hit the engine a bullet/grenade will have to go throuhg the whole length of the fuselage.. for that you'll need a very high-powered gun. From 6 o'clock small machineguns are practically useless because of the low penetration ability, cannons will do more damage as they can make vital part fall off http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

It's always better to fire from a position slightly askew(?) like 5 or 7 o'clock that way you can hit all parts of the aircraft; engine, cockpit and possibly the wing-root being the most rewarding.

And.. when you think that you have enough lead, double it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hope that helps.

Sounds like you are flying the Bf 109E.

Its weapon is as follows:
2x7.7mm (don't remember the name)
2x20mm (MG-FF)

The 7.7mm is a rifle calibre bullet. Only really useful to establish aim or kill pilots. You have to aim for the engine and try and get off angle shots. At the 6 o'clock perspective like you were...they are nearly useless.

Try the Bf 109G-6. Its got as standard the much improved MG151/20 (instead of the slower, lower firerate MG-FF) as its main cannon and 2 12.7mm heavy machine guns in the gun cowl. G-6's and up also have the possibility for replacing the MG151/20 cannon with a MK108 30mm cannon which has a very high explosive round. You need to be much closer to aim and hit properly but they tear targets apart.

Why not use the "View Objects" facility in the sim. You can read all you need to know about each model right there.

I wouldn't join any club that would have ME as member!
