Hi all, will PF have the option to open canopy for landed planes as well as taking off planes from carrier?

It would be nice to see a plane that is taking off with the canopy open...

thanks all,
GBOF

This has already been asked and discussed

Thats the idea guys! I totally agree too! How about a function that allows the player to tell the wingman(s) to land after the leader (player) has landed? I mean some sort of a keyboard command.. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif In CFS2, the bloody wingmans just circle the base after the leader has landed... in quick mission that is... :-)

lol I CAN'T BELEIVE WHAT I SEE.

I talked about opening canopy like 6 month ago on Oleg's ready room and you'd be surprised to see how many people were against that idea.. lol

i just can't beleive to see that 3 guys seems to think the same way as i do. Well the Top Modelers such as Gibbage doesn't think it's good... so i think that we will never get opening cannopy until MISTER Giggage decides it's good http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I don't understand how there can be opposition to have sliding canopies.

More uberplane allegations? I mean they did open the canopies in real life during take-off and landing. And it had a very practical use.

It's realisitic, and it's not like it takes serious computing power or resources to implement it.

Last I heard though is that it's not going to be in the game--from what it sounds like the game engine's not going to differ too much with FB.

There are no oppositions to sliding canopies. At least, not from people who matter.

It is not possible in PF because it would require partial remodelling of all planes cockpits to accomodate the feature. Not to mention having to tweak all of the exterior models to accomodate the sliding canopy (pivots, clipping issues).

It has nothing to do with FPS or coding or any of that stuff. Simply, the cockpits were not modelled to show parts that would be visible when the canopy is open. If these canopies did open, you would see missing polygons and other errors.

Sliding canopies will be in BoB, and that is the bottom line, cuz Oleg said so (note to self: photoshop Olegs head onto Stone Cold). Really, this has to be the 5th time its been brought up in this forum alone.

If it was a coding issue I'd understand, but I mean would it take that much work to model the sides of the canopy? Put a polygon side to the canopy so it won't be missing any polys. Changing the cockpit models to show an open canopy doesn't seem like neck-breaking work.

Well, it's not a big deal though, I only open canopies in games for the aesthetic fun http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

To clarify, you would have to add code of course, just like to enable any feature. But retrofitting all the cockpits would be prohibitive by itself. Maybe a half dozen hours per plane (a guess), times dozens of planes... you will be getting to hundreds of man hours, more for the external and testing, and you might spend thousands of hours for the USA and Jap planes alone.

Much more efficient to incorporate it in a new game, from the very start.

A good chunk of an afternoon of building and re-mapping both the interior and exterior parts for each individual plane, plus coding to support all the parts movements and then re-compiling everything when done... *snaps fingers* no problem

I'd like to see opening canopy's too. Then I could get those darn canopy frames out of my way when dogfighting. My guess would be you'd be seeing a lot of pilot's getting some fresh air. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

A compromise would be having this only on new 3D models.

It's "important" only for carrier planes anyway.

It's a nice feature in Lock On, really adds to the "aah, mission accomplished" feeling, and a very nice touch is the increase in volume. Reminds you that you're inside a noisy thing! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

In PF I would imagine it making already tense carrier landing alot more immersive and exciting.
It's not a must-feature, but one of those touches that make classics classic. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I agree, just for carrier planes. It is essential for realism.

Otherwise, why develope another sim if it isn't better then the previous one?

Pacific weather: Hot & Humid! Not unusual to fly with the canopy open. If this were modeled it would add a great deal to the overall feel.

make the engine noise and wind noise increase when opening the canopy as well.

Oh and I want to smell the avgas and hydraulic fluid when I have the canopy open as well.lol http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif
