"Foo Fighters". Great Band http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

In WWII, some things that were unexplained were called 'foo fighters', much like St Elmo's Fire was once thought to be a kind of supernatural occurance. Foo fighters might have been a seeming luminescence on a wing or aerial, or some other natural electrical phenomenon. It wasn't a nazi secret weapon http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

If I recall correctly, the term comes from US servicemen in far Eastern service in and around China. If memory serves, "Foo Dogs" are part of Chinese mythology.

"Gremlins" (who sabotaged aircraft, sometimes in flight) and "Foo fighters" were a thing some pilots and aircrew swore were real. I wasn't there http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif so I don't know what they saw, for sure.

Although the Germans were quite technically proficient, they weren't building flying saucers that I know of. They did make some aircraft that would puzzle allied servicemen, like jets and such. During the war, all sorts of technical innovations were ascribed to the Germans. At one point, Allied bomber crews were under the impression that the Germans were waging psychological warfare using 'scarecrow' shells that looked like a bomber that had been hit by flak. This turned out to actually BE bombers getting hit by flak.

There are a couple of great Bugs Bunny cartoons from WWII featuring Bugs and a "Gremlin".

~edit
I should say, that anything that a pilot couldn't immediately explain might well be termed a 'foo fighter' and may even have been thought to be a nazi secret weapon, especially if it seemed like an aircraft that they never could catch or that only they could see.
