Those Aussie Mustangs in your signature are post-war stangs? did Australia actually pilot Stangs in ww2 Pacific?

In Fact were there any Mustangs in the Pacific?

There most certainly were Mustangs used in the PTO.
Escorting the B29s to the Japanese home islands was one role they filled.

As far as Aussie Mustang pilots go, I don't think any saw action before VJ day, however there definately were a few RAAF Mustang squadrons sent to Japan for occupation duty very shortly afterward.

Some guy told me once the CA-15 Kangaroo was apparently not a Mustang (or even a copy of one), but instead was an independently developed Aussie fighter that just coincidentally looks almost exactly like a P-51. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Is that true? I found that very hard to believe considering their virtually identical appearance.

necrobaron is correct, the CA-15 is an Aussie design although there is QUITE the coincidence in the airframe design. Get a load of this guys, the orginal powerplant was to be the amazing Pratt & Whitney R-2800-10W Double Wasp Turbo-Supercharged RADIAL ENGINE! Can you imagine the amount of redesign to convert from the Pratt radial to the 2,305HP inline Rolls Griffin 61 with all the inherent plumbing that goes with liquid cooling?. That dev time is what put the project off until the end of the wat. The first prototype flight took place on 3/4/46. Of interest to us sim nuts, the CA-15 was never officially named or designated, it just goes by the contract number of Commenwealth Aircraft Number Fiveteen. All the best, LongHorn
PS while I'm a Georgia boy out of Texas, my Sheila (that's Wife for those of us in the US) is out of Alice Springs. Just to keep the thread on the Aussie subject <ggg.>

Sorry to pinch a thread but they did build a couple at least.
I'd be happy to see the Beaufort in PF.

Well there ya go eh? Learn somethin' new every day.
I allways assumed that the 'Kangaroo' was just an Aussie licence built P51.
Thanks for enlightening me guys http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

that plane looks larger than a Mustang. I saw at the Chrysler museum a 16 cylinder engine they had in the works at the end of the war. it was a liquid cooled v16 for flight testing it was fitted to a P-47. I guess swapping from radial to liquid cooled wasn't that big of a deal

If Ian Boys can make the minsk Map for AEP why can't some of us make new maps for PF. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif
