View Full Version : Any good TANK sims?

08-12-2003, 04:52 AM
Hey everybody... I was wondering... Is there an IL2 out there among tank sims? Something that's fun and has good graphics?

I've always wanted to try a tank sim, and now that I just got my joystick I can finally start getting into simulations of all sorts... Any sugestions?

PanzerElite. (http://www.panzerelite.com/panzerelite.html)

The biggest knock against it is that online, you can't have the "mission experience" you get with the boxed missions. It's all just "deathmatch" stuff, with no AI.

But, for the feel, the systems and the immersion, you can't beat it.

Steel legions was the classic but its a bit old and doesnt run well on newer windows machines. its also a 2D top down strategy sim a bit like C&C so probably not what you want.

There is a new FPS/tank sim from Maddox games coming out eventually but i know very little about it.

Forget Panzer Elite. A noble effort, but seriously flawed in many respects.

Instead, go find "Steel Beasts" (www.steelbeasts.com) (http://www.steelbeasts.com)). Released maybe 2 years ago, it is now used almost unaltered by the US Army for training tank leaders. The graphics are VGA (640x480) and not hardware-accelerated, but give it a try. You'll be astonished how you forget the dated graphics - the sound is top-notch and the tactical gameplay is incredibly deep.

I can't recommend it highly enough - it's a fantastic simulation - the IL-2 of ground sims (albeit with weak graphics.)

Keep an eye out for Steel Beasts 2, which is being worked on and should be released later this year, which will bring modern 3-D accelerated graphics to the sim.

I bought Panzer Elite at the advice of some people at this forum, that was a mistake. Worst $50 ever spent. The game has terrible graphics (even for 2 years ago), poor damage modeling and pathetic sounds. I don't have steal beasts, but I can't imagine it would be worse than Panzer Elite.

At the start of WW2 the German army lacked experienced anti-aircraft gunners. The average gunner was so bad that the USSR decided to help them out. They did it by forcing some of their pilots to fly I-153 flak magnets. These planes were slow but very sturdy. This allowed German anti-aircraft gunners to get a large amount of target practice on a relatively small number of planes. Thanks to the Soviets help, by the end of the war the German anti-aircraft gunners were amoung the best in the world.

I'll put my vote in for Steel Beasts. It has:

- Accurate tank gunnery
- Sounds sampled from a REAL M1
- Realistic artillery support and effects, including HE, DPICM (anti-tank), FASCAM (arty mines) and Smoke.
- Useful smoke grenades
- Realistic damage modelling to running gear, stabilisation, sights, LRF, etc. A T64 may not be able to kill an M1 in a frontal attack, but it can sure make it unhappy!
- Consistent and believable graphics: Excellent rolling hills terrain to a long range _without hovering tanks_, gun flashes, anti tank missiles, good Thermal Imaging view, trees. Old looking, but still damn good.
- Excellent tactical AI. Your tanks will automatically find hull down positions, pop smoke, reverse out of artillery fire, change positions. You can just use the E key to instruct your driver to find a firing position.
- The commander's seat is actually useful! You can usually do better driving from the commander's seat with a wide field of vision and directing your gunner onto targets as you spot them.

It freakin' KICKS ***.

I hear Combat Mission is really good and I want to get it but I think the only way you can get it is to order it rom their website and I don't have a credit card. Anyone know any stores that sell Combat Mission?

Combat Mission, it's tanks and infantry, and it's turn based. I happen to like it a lot.

Panzer Elite-Heck no if you have a newer PC.. It has a bug that makes the game unplayable, anything like a pent 2.8 and higher and a 533 bus speed and higher --thr tanks move about mach 4 and the defense doesnt react--check out post at message board for panzer elite--people have been complaining about this for a while and nothing has been done yet--if you have a old pc go for it its a nice game when operational...with the aditonal mod work its nice but since I got a new PC it is no longer playable...

The only tank sim available that even comes close to acually being called, a "Sim", is Steal Beats.

The detail in simulated gunnery techinique, and modern armor tactics overcome the game's lack of graphics. It is an older game, but a more modern 3D version is sceduled for release around Christmas., Steal Beasts2.

The software emulates the simulators used by the U.S. military to train Gunners and TCs in gunnery technique, fire commands, and switchology.

As a veteran M1-A1/2 Tanker I can vouch this software package is the most acurate available to civilians.

Best WW-II tank sim: Panzer Elite SE with the OSTPAK mod. I tweaked a few other things but OSTPAK is fine as stock.

Panzer Commander is also good, but needs Windows95/98 to run.

Best modern tank sim: I didn't know we had any!?!

Remember the days of "Steel Thunder" by Accolade? 1989 i think, still got the origional floppy...

Steel Beast is the most realistic Tank Sim out there. Incredible gameplay albeit with weak graphics.

Holy! Prophets exist to this day! Thanks God to that http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I Didn't like panzer elite because lack of realism.. for WW2-era tank battles, there is only one option: Combat Mission-series.. Buy CMBB: Barbarossa To Berlin, and you love it.. even though it is turn based, but it is the most realistic ww2-stratetic game ever..it models everything on armor.. armor thickness, armor slopeness, chance of coincidence.. and so on..

for modern era only one option at the moment: Steel Beasts. There is lack of tank simulation both for modern times, and ww2 times.. I sure owuld like to play a realistic ww2-tank sim..

Steel Beasts is interesting. Looking forward for SB2.

Panzer Elite with CodeFix+Ostpak is great.
Played it in MP the last days with a few squadmembers. Atmospheric and exciting.

Hi there!

The original Panzer Elite had some serious problems, but if you use the Code updates/fixes together with a good selection of add-ons, it becomes quite acceptable IMHO. I haven't seen all that's available out there for WW2 but of the one's I've seen so far, this is the best option.

As for the 'modern' stuff, I can't advise because I've only tried one, M1 Tank Platoon 2, patched. It was OK and could be worth a look if you can get it cheap (I did). I had some fun, but I wouldn't rate it as 1st class simming.

The graphics for both the above are dated and neither come within a bull's roar of IL-2/FB - sorry!

Hoping something new will arrive soon, with good graphics, good modelling and high levels of realism!

I can vouch for Steel Beasts. It is the best tank sim ever. I have been involved ever since the first demo was made available. My first reaction upon hearing about it was - 2D, non-accelerated graphics - no thank you. However, thankfully, I downloaded the demo and the experience was so unbelievably immersive the first thing I did was preorder it. Well, after 2 years - if not more, it still has a place of its own on my hard drive. The game is so unbelievable it has even driven me to joining a virtual tank squadron.

Now I can't wait for SB2.

panzer commander is really good, its fairly old and is starting to look its age but is one of those games that can really put you in the mood,It plays better with the keyboard than the joypad, has a great editor but should be a bit longer,a tank of a game.

i just remembered, panzer commander is becoming hard to get so if you have trouble finding it email me and i'll get it for you,all you will have to do is pay p&p,(if you are really stuck)

I read a his thread and I want to propose Operation Flashpoint, incl. it's many addons (vietnam, ww2) in the discussion. Flashpoint has it all and it can be played from simple shooter to tactical platoon leader (of tanks). The ww2 addons has lot's of tanks already and the details of those are great (wait to see the kingtiger pack). Get more info on this game! It's still evolving. The Invasion 44 mod is really great!
anyways: dedicated tanksim: hmmm M1TP2 (modern warfare). Most fun: Panzer Commander.
