I tried flying the Fiat42 and G50 in multiplayer and get owned too much. I am getting owned on two accounts...1 is that I am a new player, 2 the Fiat42 and G50 just can not compete with the later version planes.

What planes where given to the Italians, by the Germans, during WWII? Maybe I try to fly one of those...

Well, if you're flying the Cr.42 and G.50, try flying agianst Hurricane Mk.IIb's and IIc's, and Gladiators (J8As). These are the main aircraft that fought against those Italian crates in the early part of the Mediterranena campaign.

Later Spitfire Mk.Vs and Mk.IXs came in there, and then of course the americans came over with their P-40s (also flown by RAF and Commonwealth AFs in N. Africa) and I think P-39s(?) to start with, then as the African campaing rolled on and the invasion of Sicily and Italy went on, then you get the P-47s, B-17s, P-38s, etc, etc, etc. But you have to consider that the Italians also received far better aircraft as time went on. We should be getting a few decent Italian fighter aircraft towards the end of the year after PF comes out, so real Italian match ups can be formed.

Or you can pit the G.50 against the I-16 and I-153 and Hurrricanes as they were flown by the Finns against Russia, I believe.

But to answer your question, I think the Italians pretty much flew their own aircraft, and most luftwaffe aircraft were flown by german crews, although I believe Me-210s and -410s were flown by Italian crews. But 109s, Me-110/210/410s, He-111s, Me-363s, Ju-52s were all in the Mediterranean theatre (and I'm sure many more).

whit ye looking at, ya big jessie?!?!

also found this:

"Following the Italian surrender in 1943, German troops continued to occupy the Northern part of Italy. Although Mussolini declared a new Repubblicana Sociale Italiana, the north of Italy was, in effect, under direct German control.

A new Air Force was created from the northern remnants of the old Reggia Aeronautica (Royal Air Force). This was called Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana (ANR) and, in spite of the political climate, it maintained its identity as an independent Italian service until the very end of the war.

The new Italian Air Force was equipped with a variety of aircraft, including Fiat G.55 and Macchi MC 205. However, many of these local aircraft (and the local manufacturing facilities) were lost after the Armistice. Germany therefore invested heavily in re-equipping the fledgling ANR with various models of the Messerschmitt Bf 109."
