S!

I missed my carrier Landings.

So for the RAF662 I created a mission to give us a carrier like experiance.

Its not a carrier but it has all the feel of it.

It should be run as a dogfight mission with NO SHOOTING rules.

The dimensions of the runway are the same as the origonal CFS1 Ark Royal.

All the same hazards are there, including falling off the deck.

I suggest you start with a hurricane to start with. Always land from the submarine end. It is virtually impossible from the other end due to the direction of the wind.

The current record is 6 Hurricanes on the tarmac at the same time, although I would expect a more realistic record of 10 or more soon.

Its great once your down, you can sit there and watch your mates crashing and getting frustrated LOL.

The mission can be downloaded from WWW.RAF662.com (http://WWW.RAF662.com)

Goto the downloads section and then the IL2 FB dogfight downloads section, the mission name is VENGEANCE ISLAND.

A track to help you learn can be downloaded here.

Heh, I downloaded it from a previous thread you posted in but only had a chance to try it once.

I failed miserably though, and it was in a 109. I didn't realize you were suppossed to come in from the other side either. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

It's a great idea to hone your landing skills and will be practicing with it more over the coming weeks.

I would probably prefer and offline version though.

Just open the mission in the Full Mission Builder and add two waypoints for any player aircraft you like - then play.

S!

A 109 is the hardest Aircraft to land here, it was never designed to land on a carrier.

A hurricane always had the ability to be a carrier based aircaft. Some heave bombers also are capable of landing on carriers, a C17 has landed on a carrier.

It is a matter of endless hours of practice and then you will find the right approach.

The version 2 mission gives the ability to land almost anything you want appart from the 262 and the B1. In this mission a second island has been added with a longer runway that is unrealistic as far as carrier landings are concerned.

But for those like me who like to struggle with a P47 at stall speed for 3 minutes its great.

S!

So far 150 odd downloads of this new concept in game scenarios.

Vengeance Island has a new strip, for those faster landing aircraft and those who require a little longer strip.

Still tough but with a slightly side landing area.

Been flying the games in Hyperlobby all week, with many pilots coming to have a go, and a few landing. I must say, the pilots we meet flying FB, have to be some of the best and most courteous pilots around. All told in ten days, only one chap ejected for insisting on shooting up people trying to get the landing balance correct.

So hats of to you guys. Thanks.

Brings back memories from the CFS1 days /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I remember landing everything we could in the Ark Royal. From Corsairs to F4 Phantoms. Now those were fun times.

A real gem.

For all the hotshots out there, give it a whirl. You'll either be swimming or wearing a halo.

Thanks for a great concept.

take a 109 full flaps radiator full open cut throttle to zero and hit 100 percent prop pitch. you will stop on one half a dime. in planes with the prop decel its simple

don't try that in an emil though

deadstick and dirty (full flaps gear down) the FB Emil has the flight characteristics of a brick .. in a vertical dive its lucky to break 280 kmh http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Last night I tried 2 landings, both in a Hurricane. Surprisingly for me, I managed a good landing on my first attempt (well any one you walk away from is a good landing /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif ) I overflew the "carrier" and circled at 300m to have a good look, then I flew out to the little island which is almost at 6 o clock from the deck and about 2k's out.

Using this as a start point, I flew from 300m Alt back towards the "carrier". Using my usual landing procedure (i.e. aim for the start of the deck and reduce power, deploy flaps and say a prayer) I approached at an almost perfect glide angle and heading. At 30m alt I deployed gear and allowed the plane to fall the last few meters to touch down on the 1st quarter of the deck, When my gear collapsed and I skidded almost 180 degress and stopped. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

I survived but any other planes would now have a reduced deck to land on ( as my smoking Hurri was taking up the 1st quarter ). Luckily I was trying it offline and no squad mates were playing.

My second approach was almost identical apart from my throttle settings (which I had ignored in a feeble attempt to light up a smoke). As the deck rushed towards me I thought to myself "this seems a bit fast" and I dropped again onto the 1st quarter of the "carrier". By the time I had put my smoke in the ashtray and remembered to cut the throttle I was rolling off the end of the "carrier" /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

All in all it was a fun experience. Great Stuff indeed /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

efforts to land a 262 on the short runway have been spectacularly unsucessful

am working on a technique involving skipping, wheels up, off the water onto the runway which looks promising

262 aside ..

on a more serious note .. its quite possible to get the 1938 hurri to a full stop by fire number 6 just over half way down the runaway on the short island if you touchdown right on the threshold

Yessir, the Ark Royal was a trip. We had hours of fun trying to get as many planes as possible on deck, usually the last would take off the whole bunch.

CFS had a huge "collision bubble", and you couldn't get very close.

We used to run dogfights over the Ark all the time.

Hey, what about the 109T, a modified Emil, with a hook to land on the never finished german carrier?
Just saw some pics of her in a magazine...

Looks like a nice task, thanks, will try it after work!

Thank you!! ..for a nice challenge, wich relly cheers up, if you managae to complete it.. I wonder what is the toughest plane to land in the carrier (not to the longer runway in ver2) I mean that after the landing the plane still haves landing gears, wings and stuff? And is anyone hosting this challenge, it would be fun to try it online(so everyone can laugh.. ..perhaps to everyone/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

And if somenone is hosting, would he or she remove most of those boats around the "carrier" 'cause my fps doesn't like those, and the landing its much more easier, if it isn't a slideshow...

Thanks once more RAF_Blackace, luckily we still have some umm.. those who save my monday evening in our community!

S!

We intend to hold a records page. All you need to do is send a picture of your landings to me at....

RAF_Blackace@Hotmail.com

Some simple rules.

1. A record will only stand if all the same aircraft are used, I E, a record for hurries, for 109's etc.

2. The picture must show the pilots labels.

3. The picture must show the Submarine and major buildings intact (destroyed oil barrels and fences are OK).

4. The picture should be of the line up on the tarmac once all pilots are down with flaps up and engines off.

So come on Guys, which squad wants to hold the record for hurricanes (current record is 7).

XyZspineZyX

I downloaded this mission last night and had a blast with it. My first few attempts resulted in a wingless Hurricane plumiting down the runway. Now after finding out how lousy I was at landing my plane I got to wondering, what is the proper landing technique to land on such a shortened runway?

XyZspineZyX

Fantastic. Been at this all afternoon, and so far only been able to land a Hurricane and a Stuka safely. Very good exercise, though Mrs falling-bird thinks I'm becoming obsessed.

S!

The first record has been set for Hurricanes.

http://www.btinternet.com/~james.thorpe8/hurries.jpg

7 on the tarmac and 2 off, early days.

The pilots present were in landed order.

Marmaduke. RAF_Nick. Saint -69. vres. RAF_Blackace. RAF_Macaw and RAF_Lank.

So far the Aircraft that I have seen land here are as follows.

Hurricanes, all models. He111. Yak 9. IL2. P40. Me262.

If anyone gets anything else down please let me know.

All records will be posted as such if the pictures prove the act.

This will be a good practice run before the patch comes out.. Takeoffs and landings will be harder because the rough ground is rougher (as it should be) (i.e. no easy taking off or landing on the grass)
