View Full Version : Improve weather effects

I want to describe what I expect about weather:
99% time during the game we are looking to the sky, so:
-rain drops and wathermarks on the glasses are missings during raining...
-bad time must to have clouds compacts and darkers (look at Strike Fighters, no any clouds motions here...but greats colours for me)
- There is too much blue in the blue sky
- various clouds shapes and sizes
- moon circle is really too small when I look from my cockpit (...I'm a romantic flyer)
- Dynamic and random weather conditions generated by AI during the game: totally clear while takeoff but when I will be over my target...

Almost I will look all this in BoB ?

I like the weather as it is basically.. although everything you mentioned would only make it better.... I would love to see transitional weather.

Oleg has said that weather will be getting quite a bit of attention for BoB. And so it should...the British Isles experience quite a bit of varried weather effects.

...and reflected in the water.

Dynamic weather would be great... it would add a whole new tactical element to campaigns.

If Oleg would take a look at DiD's 'Wargasm'(I'm serious) he would see the definitive 'raindrop on glass' effect, and the best rain atmospherics ever on a computer game.
Unfortunately it won't load onto Xp so I can't get a screen shot, DiD new a thing or two about flight sims but their swan song was the atmospherics in Wargasm, weak early morning sunlight - oppressive desert sun - and best of all - mist and drizzle in the mountains.
Anyone else remember plodding through the chinese hills with the rain clattering off your tin hat ?

I'd settle for some wind (other than when there's a storm) and a windsock (or two) at every airfield...
That's the only thing I bugs me at the mo (and it's a pretty minor gripe at that), I think the "atmosphere" is pretty good as it is... I love those early morning mist missions, with the dawning sun in my eyes as I fly east in my Me-109

Personally, I consider the variability in visibility, atmospherics, sky colors, and clouds the strongest point in FB. I also love the early morning haze. I tend to set weather to poor or blind because this really doesn't affect visibility that much but gives the atmosphere a tremendously realistic sense of depth and substance, particularly at higher altitudes. My biggest complaint is with the rain/snow and storm settings. The clouds are still just the low puffy cumulus, and above 2000m the sun always becomes visible. We need huge thunderclouds that reach to 10,000 meters. I also think the lightning effect is very poor. We get nice flashes on planes, but what about the landscape?

My only other complaint is that wind buffeting is not accompanied by any sounds of creaking structure or gusts. I've certainly noticed these noises in light planes I've been in.

I remember seeing a screen shot of lock on where there was overcast and the sun was shinning through part of it. That look awesome.

I get a general sense that the weather in FB doesn't really "move."

Another thing that I am wondering about. If I fly into a cloud while online flight, will the other people see the same cloud and where I might think I am completely hidden, would the opponent be able to see me? And if these weather systems are moving dynamically online, how is all of that going to be coordinated. I can't imagine programming that.

It makes me wonder how anything as beautiful as this game gets completed in the first place.

The original unpatched version of IL-2 had raindrops on the windshield.

They removed it in one of the first patches.... probably for speed.

Now it's 3 years later and computers are nearly twice as fast. The code is still there probably, just rotting away. I bet it would be trivial to uncomment the raindrop effect.

Anyone else remember the raindrops in early IL-2?

A solid overcast would be a nice change, where you could select the cloud base and thickness of the overcast. It would also be great, in lieu of some kind of dynamic weather pattern, to be able to draw/select on the map where you wanted overcast conditions vs. scattered or broken conditions - much like you can do now with the level of destruction brush in the FMB.

My wish list for weather effect improvements has this at the top: Remove the Ai's X-ray vision. Nothing kills the immersion faster than ducking into a cloud and getting shot 15 seconds later by the Ai, who can see through the clouds. Before radar and SAM's, flying near or into the weather was a frequently used tactic, one that currently can't be used off-line.

All the other suggestions sound good, but the bottom line is that if the Ai can see through them, I'll be flying with the weather turned off, anyway.

I have to agree about the AI.

Been playing some missions in thunder-storms and I can barely work out which way is up. Meanwhile the enemy planes are chasing me and it is obvious that as far as they're concerned it is a fine day and not a cloud in the sky.

The ability to create a weather front would be very cool! I realize that it would have to be fixed so as not to increase the processor load, but that work fine for Coop missions.

Which way is up is right. I can hardly tell. But yes, more rain, lightning on the ground 10000 foot clouds, give me all of it.
