View Full Version : FORGOTTEN BATTLES: An eastern front only sim?

IMO The Answer is NO.
i've been trying to beat ppl over the head with this
same thing for months now! People, people look at your FB disks...
it say's "FORGOTTEN BATTLES WWII 1941-1945" it is not an Eatstern Front only sim. let's put that behind us...that was IL-2. Not FB. the only reason Il-2 is in the name is for marketing. it is the continuation of a product line. that's all. It's obvious to any one with 1/2 a brain that Oleg intended more for FB than just the eastern front. Personaly i like the idea of haveing all fronts coverd in this game. A few more PTO/ETO maps & maybe 2 Med maps & this sim would be perfect. Bugs aside it's damn near perfect now. I'm not planing on taking part in the BOB. I'm more than likely going to Olegs WWII rts till his pacific sim is done. BOB holds no real interst for me personaly...so till the PTO sim hit's i'll stick with FB.

But since this seems to be in conflict in the community as to weather or not FB is an Eastern Front only sim i wanted to open this up for discution & see what the gerneral consesus is. So what say you. Is FB an Eastern Front sim?
yes or no?

Thank you! People kept telling me not to model X or Y aircraft because its not "Eastern Front". For MONTHS I keep telling them IL2 is Eastern Front, FB is WWII. Not with ample proof from Oleg, they may relize this. OLEG is adding PACIFIC and FRANCE maps, PLUS the P-51 and Zero and Ki-84! Does that sound like Oleg wants to keep FB "eastern front"? NO!!! Get it through your thick skulls people and accept the reality that FB will soon have company in the sky's.

No.Its going to be an all encompassing flight sim.
Enjoy all the free stuff and the future pay add ons.Its not like you have to spend your money on anything else til BOB anyway.Nothing can touch this sim.

I can only hope we can keep the tallented individuals like Gibbage (and others) employed as they complete many of the existing projects that have been started. A second pay for add-on CD...I'd gladly support & purchase that. Additional a/c and maps is what I want and yes, BoB doesn't interest me either.

This is an issue driven by game development not community attitude.

It's neither here nor there what end-users think.

A 2nd add-on CD is very possible. There are many aircraft that wont make it in the first one that can make up a 2nd. It depends on a few things. #1, how good the 1st CD does, #2, weather UBI thinks it will slow down BoB, #3, if we have enough contant to justify a CD or too much content for a download. I think we have #3 covered, so #1 is up to us, and #2 is up to Ubi and Oleg.

Here is a taste of what could be on the 2nd CD

Ki-61
B-24
B-25
Do-335
Spit IX
Spit XIV
Do-17
Flyable Ju-88
He-111Z or more versions
Beufighter
F4U
F6F
Bf-110
Me-410
Hs-129
PBY 5A/6A flyable
A-20
A-26
B-26

This is just a short list off the top of my head. There are MANY more aircraft in production like Xanty's Cr.42 and others I have forgotten. Just that list alone I think justifies a 2nd CD with a few more maps and single player missions. Also, that list contains a lot of "twins" or twin engine aircraft. A lot of what is missing in IL2 FB in my openion. Also the Pacific is always an option, and lots of Med aircraft. The more I type, the more aircraft come to mind. IL2 FB is not over yet.

I have a theory about the ppl who keep claiming tht FB is a eastern sim only. But i think it best to keep that to my self. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

Yeah Gib i agree 100%. i would hope that FB support & add ons dont stop compleatly with the BoB sim. i think there is still a ton of life left in FB. & i'll buy as many add on CD's as Oleg will produce. I would hope that we could even see a few small add ons for download as well. maybe a new map or a plane of 2 even after BOB for 2 reasons. #1. I love FB 2. the bob dosnt intrest me. the reason it doesnt is that there will more than likely be no USAAF involvment in the bob sim. ie no US squadrons or aircraft & that's where my interest is. It seems to me IMO that the BoB is a product more for the Euro market than the American market. while i'm sure many from the US buy the BOB...i won't or dont plan to be one of them.Like i said though i do still plan to support oleg by buying the WWII rts but as for bob. Not for me. I may change my mind...but not likely. in any case it's still a long way off.

I keep trying to tell some of my old CFS cronies that... I think if UBI can come out with the second CD by May at the latest it shouldnt conflict with BoB. I hope they do. I would still buy BoB. I still fool around with IL2 so I think FB will have a lot of life in it for a while.

Exactly.... but i dont think #1 will be a problem. I would buy it sight unseen. In fact I would probably be at the store when it opened like I was for FB...which blew me away because I just dont do that sort of thing...but it was easy for FB after a taste of IL2.

Copperhead, you are absolutely right. A couple of guys posted about that Italian torpedo bomber, stating that it wasn't used in the eastern front. Well, this isn't an eastern front game and regardless of where the thing served, its nice to see as many planes and as many nationalities present.

I'm a real fan of line warfare, and sometimes I like to see a vast array of allied aircraft versus axis aircraft. Its a fantastic matchup...vast and diverse types of aircraft fighting it out...multiple styles, performance types, all sorts of things. Its really interesting. The more the better I say.

You are correct, ofcourse it is not just an eastern war sim http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif. A lot of it is eastern front because of it's roots but it's obvious that it was expanded beyond and will continue to do so.

I agree, its pretty obvious that this isnt just an Eastern Front sim. And, like IceFire, I'd like to see as many planes as I can get. But on the flip side, I tend to think that we should keep planes of, say the Pacific Theater(as example), with other planes of that theater. I kinda have a feeling that we'll wind up seeing planes from one theater flying alongside/against planes from other theaters, when they never did in the war. I would like to see things stay as historically accurate as possible. However, thats just my opinion, and I'm not criticizing anybody.

My FB box states: 'Discover the war on the Eastern front...". Like the original IL-2 it was designed as an Eastern Front sim. However, with the promised add-on maps and a/c, FB has clearly grown beyond that. So I don't see why there's an argument whether it is or isn't.
If folk want to fly Eastern Front only then fair enough. If they want to fly Japanese a/c then fair enough.
Personally, I'm waiting eagerly for the Komet, which hardly had any impact on the air war, and none at all on the Eastern Front, but is fascinating to me. Each to their own and let's ditch the arguments.
Cheers!

my answer to this question is short and simple: NO

I don't have much interest in BoB also, however if Oleg would continue with addition of remaining major world regions in which WWII was fought I think a name such as "WWII Air War" would be appropriate.

I will continue to buy his products only if they include or add to previous ones. BoB alone and incompatible with IL-2 is of no use for me.

copperhead i completely disagree with what you said. you said you will not buy BOB. i KNOW you will buy it. in fact ill put money on it. b.o.b. is just going to be forgotten battles with an all new engine all new graphics and it will encompass all of ww2. just like fb is doing. its just the next generation to take advantage of new graphics and processors but theyre just starting it on a different front. everyone in fb will switch to bob just like they all did in going from il2 to fb....no one flys il2 anymore. so im calling you out on that BABAY i know yer buying it on the first day or pre order even~!....quack

FB is just an IL2 add-on. The fact that UBI smallbrains decided this to be a new product is another story. Were many debates about it. If they will just say FB and not IL2-FB I think not so many newcomers will join this world."IL2" had to stay in the title name.afterall what's FB? Exactly what Oleg patches provided us: new planes , new maps , improved/corrected FM's etc. But yes ,they managed to squeze alot of money from us ,I don't mind paying Oleg&Co for his outstanding work. But UBI , hmmm...

Too true - this isn't an eastern front sim anymore. Cool!!! Many thanks to Oleg and all the private developers for all their hard work. I personally prefer maps with historic plane sets (whether they be eastern/western europe, pacific or mediterranean), but I'll also quite happily engage in "all planes available" free-for-alls as well.

The Battle of Britain sounds really cool (and I owe my life and freedom to the real-life battle - something I'll never forget), but we'll be stuck with three fighters to choose from.

Of course FB is a Eastern front sim. It says so quite clearly on the box, but so what?

It just means that when people buy the game they should expect a) a bug free game, and b) a game that's set on the Eastern front.

If (or rather WHEN) we got more planes and maps from other theatres, that's just an extra bonus for which we obviously should be thrilled. I know I am.

cheers/slush

(Myself, I would love to see more of the forgotten battles and planes of the Eastern front, but that's an entirely different subject.)

As far as BoB is concerned, Oleg has obviously made the decision to give more attention and detail, to not just the planes, but to things in the game other than planes- such as the DM of ground vehicles etc. it seems that this is partly responsible for the planes set being so small. If this decision by Oleg is to be continued throughout his forthcoming sims (which i hope he does -) then the idea of expanding any of them to encompass every theatre and plane in WWII would be entirely unfeasible, taking way too much time and effort.

it therefore seems to me that the perfect platform to build a sim that could cover all countries and theatres is FB - in a way trading off quality for quantity (in relation to any sim brought out in 2/3 years time onward)

i would really love to see FB expanded to cover at least more than any sim has covered before- if not planes and maps from every combatent nation in WWII. If people still complain it should be a eastern front sim then they should just fly eastern front planes.

Any game with a good physics engine ends up being expanded into all possible uses of that engine. I'm just glad that the originators of the IL2 engine are getting a lot of mileage (and $$$) out of it before anyone else gets their shoe in the door. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Good post Copperhead.

We have gone beyond the Eastern Front, Be Sure!!

This is a good thing. There are so many stories to tell of the war in the air during WW2, and I want to experience as many as possible.

The more theatres of operation the better.

I am very excited about the Japanese aircraft in the pipeline. They represent an exotic unknown to me, as IL2 was my first flight sim.
