Set mouse sensitivity in FB input menu to 5.0 or even 10.0 (the max) and you can look all over the sky and just barely move your hand. But set it back to 2.0 when finished or in FMB or QMB the mouse flipflops all over the screen.

Also put trim on mousewheel. With planes that have trim, I usually climb, descend, or fly level with trim alone.

Big disappointment for me with MS FS2002 is the restrictive hat switch views. Untill they go to mouse view,I aint buying any of their products. No mouse view kills realism and effectiveness for me.

I use my mousey most of the time. I use the hatswitch a little more often when in a server with icons on though.

For those of you who use the mouse.... Do you have two arms on your right side or what?

I don't see how it is possible to use a mouse (with my right hand) and the joystick (right hand) at the same time....

A combination approach. I use the 8-way hatswitch on my Logitech stick for quick looks over the shoulder/etc (with two buttons set to wide/zoom btw). This gives me the broad view. For detailed work, and tracking in a turn, I use a cruddy old $3 belkin TRACKBALL mouse (the ball on top, not underneath). Position it by the throttle and can drop my hand to it quickly and look in any direction I want. Use the hatswitch to snap back to a forward view. Works well.

Hatswitch with TrackIR emulation (NewView).

I won't go with TrackIR until I can get a i/o Goggles wearable display.

Stick TrackIR on that, drop the sensitivity out the bottom so you have to crank your head around all the way to turn completely:

Here's the layout: keyboard on far left, mouse in the middle, joystick on the right.

Keep your right hand on the stick and keep your left hand on the mouse. If you don't want to reach for the joystick to adjust throttle, you can set it to the mouse wheel (though I prefer the joystick throttle.
I suggest you set your mouse sensitivity to at least 2.0 and assign your right mouse button to "center view" in case you get disorientated or get a target in your sights.

Looking around with your left hand on the mouse isn't hard. Give it an hour or so. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I have a small table on my left for my wireless mouse. I do that sometimes.

Sometimes I use Cam2Pan.

If I want a quick look while I am doing something else on the keyboard, I'll use the numberpad if it is handy.

Overwhelmingly, I mostly use the Hat, and buttons 4 and 5 on my stick are "return to center", one with, and one without padlock.

Finally, a good poll that lets us find out how each other play. Very refreshing, after some of the polls that I have read, then ignored because they were OT.

Just got a TrackIR last week and just in time....I had decided to put in the time to learn to use the mouse and finally break away from the keyboard. But then TrackIR went on sale...and I did my taxes and I'm getting a refund.

Man, it's easily best $$ I've spent on peripherals after a force feedback joystick. It is way cool. Now I mapped the "0" on the number pad to recenter, and two buttons on the joystick to "Magnify FOV" incrementally and one that returns directly to "Full FOV".

Works great !

Bear in mind the mouse is already used to flick switches, rotate knobs etc in the virtual cockpit; combining mouseview with that would make it somewhat clumsy I think and might complicate coding of third party cockpits.

Track IR2 is optimised for use in FS2002 / FS2004 and is far more immersive than mouselook will ever be, though I realise the cost may be prohibitive.

Get active camera addon for free and you got mouseview, as well as many other features (like walking around cabin, or camera movement that corresponds to acceleration). This is a must have addon for Fs2002 IMO.

Numpad & Mouse -

In other words using hands to look around, using the mouse to search, Numpad for quick checks in a given direction, to rotate the view from a fixed position, to see the pixels that become recognizable as some type of aircraft when near enough, all the while having a good portion of the screen obstructed by a cockpit drawing with animated gauges, doing a quick crosscheck of the gauges, if they're readable, with the Numpad, and preset Zoom key if needed - "Full Real" in all its wonder.

Papa_K

(UAV sims could be made close to "full real" - just like sitting there, on the ground, in front of a computer screen - but I think they cheat and use WW view.)

The throttle has a mousestick on it (center-top), it works great. Smooth movements, and its not limited by the positions that a regular hatswitch is.

This isn't really a reply.. its a question!
You must have got your TIR really bedded in by now so maybe you could advise me.. (I'm not sure how to use these forums).. I have acquired an 'old' track IR GX v 1.21.. and I cant get it to centre!.. works perfectly out side the IL2-FB but inside no centering except by mode switching.. Have you solved this problem ?.. And I cant see how it can know I've got a joystick *Thrustmaster FFB mumble etc but it would be best if IR could be driven without me having to fumble over the key board.. any advice?

Another related thing.. I think the ideal would be to have the manual hatswitch facility for having a look around aswell the IR for chasing down, pursuit etc..
BUT with the IR on it doesnt happen.. .. the hat-switch just makes little jerks ( a bit like me!)no big swings over the shoulder!

whatever, any help or advice welcomed

Mouse view on the hatswitch,
Mouse on the right, wireless mouse on the left(used mostly for the smooth scroll for trim),
Trackball mouse(used most for views) on the left.Left button mapped to gunsight view, right button to full view. Scroll button steps through zoomed views, trackball works like a charm for views, with a press of the mouse buton snapping view back forward.

Strapped to the left arm of my chair, Sietek Force feedback rumble pad.
(used for trim, comms and the Rumble effect transfered through my chair)

Its a really functional layout for those who can't afford the expensive HOTAS equipment.

I got a TIR3 about 6 months ago, and would never go back. Never could get the hang of using a mouse to look around (even with a Trackball) in flight.

I found that the next best thing for me was the hat on my CH Pro Throttle used in conjunction with assigning Look Up to a button that I could push while looking around with the hatswitch. For Pro Throttle owners without TIR, that would be Button 3 or 4 on the Throttle handle while moving the POV hat with your thumb. This will 'raise' your line of sight to 45 degrees for everything but straight ahead (I assigned the 0 deg point of my POV hat to Look Front Up for that).

This allows you to scan the whole sky outside the cockpit in Wide view. Add Look Down to another button, and you can look around inside the cockpit the same way. It's workable, and after a few hours becomes almost second nature.

But it's no TIR.

cheers
