View Full Version : I knew FB was good the moment I bought it, but this-

I have been really interested in WWII fighters since I was about 6. Twenty-six years later, I update Il*2:FB to it's current patch, and well...I knew it was good. I knew that from Il*2, which I bought because it was a fresh topic for ACM simming, and it had some high critical reveiws.
But one thing: I never knew much about Soviet military tradition, organisation, and practice. All I knew was that they at times used human wave type of attacks on the ground. I knew they had Yak and MiG fighters in WWII, and that was about it, don't forget I grew up in the late '70s and early to mid '80s, and info was not forthcoming from the USSR due to the USA's, um, let's say, rivalry with the Soviets http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif So it's a big unknown to me. Is FB fairly accurate in the little things, like aircraft ID markings? Hmmm...on the VVS side, I don't know. On the German side, it's fairly accurate, so I assume on the Soviet side it's pretty good too.

So I patch to current version Friday night after my campaign offline is over. Yeah, I whooped butt in La 5s and the La-7 (although I do think the La-5fn is overall a better package for the missions I was flying in my Leningard campaign than the La-7), big deal, I can refly any mission http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif, but anyway, I now have B-17Gs and P-51s, and I have gun pods for Bf-109Gs and Bf-110s...I get to thinking what a lot of folks here have, let's try an escort mission. OK, I make one in QMB. I'm using 361st P-51s and custom pilot skins...a few custom Bf-109s and custom pilot skins, and it's my two section flight of 8 P-51s escorting a small section of the bomber stream that got seperated near the Denmark coast in mid-1944, as a rough idea of what I was attempting to replicate. I figured I'd use the Crimea map, and compass points and airfeilds would be wrong, but whatever, I'm messing around. I set the altitude at 7500 meters, all friendlies have US markings so the radio chatter is English and the control chatter turns out to be British as a bonus. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif Wow, was this better than I ever expected. I saved the track and looked at it latter, it was very convincing as long as I didn't look at the compass headings...there was light flak, a bomber section holding formation through it, 4 P-51s on either side of the bombers escorting, Bf-110s flash through the bombers, fore (and aft) guns blazing, Bf-109s ignore the Mustangs and make an attack an then dive away...WOW. I am going to have to mess around with FMB to have several waves of small attacks, and then have some ground targets of opportunity. This was easily my best PC game/sim moment, flying The Detroit Miss on an escort mission and shooting down a Bf-109 and 2 Bf-110s without even getting shot at. All the bombers came home, although one badly damaged one that I flew personal escort for as it slipped behind the rest crashed on landing (Colonel Christian cut him off in 'LOU IV'- as an historical note, he named the plane for his daughter) and the B-17 couldn't recover from his evasive maneuvers (tail plane damage), and all 8 P-51s returned safely although Sky Bouncer was trailing a thin ribbon of greasy smoke- must have caught a round in a cylinder head...this was pretty realistic from my point of view! I am now actually jittery, waiting for the expansion pack. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I can envision greater things, but FB is without question the state of the art. Think how far combat flight sims have come. Does anyone remember Flying Tigers from the early seventies?

FB is awesome most of the time. Sometimes I can't seem to believe what can happen in this sim.

Unfortunately, there are still some (mostly minor) bugs and errors that can spoil this 'authentic' feeling - friendly planes crashnig into each other while flying in the formation - that's really driving me mad...

Looking forward to the BOB though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

I recommend picking up a copy of Battle over Europe.

It was $22.00 shipped from JustFlight.com ($7.00 off due to free bonus points for setting up an account)

The Dgen generates the type of action you described almost every mission, and Ngen generates the same for online missions.

you can play the online campaigns in single player for a different twist. The online campaigns offer a different experience.

when doing so, each side will be split into two groups. one group from each side is tasked with a mission goal, the other group from each side must prevent them from accomplishing it.

(details on page 14 of BoE manual)

Im so glad I bought it.

Is BoE an online-only purchase? I thought it was, but somebody mentioned it was for sale at an airport?? Anyone have clarification on that?

Ive only heard of it being available at 2 locations, JustFlight.com and some airport.

dont think they elaborated which airport, or at least I dont remember.

I used a debit card and ordered from justflight. The free shipping from the UK took 4 days to arrive at my home. (east coast, usa)

In the near future it is supposed to be available in the usa.

Yep, first thing I did with the new patch was setup a B17 with escort vs Axis. Really quite incredible. Sometimes I`m surprised some people still quibble when Oleg has basically given free an incredible present!

In many ways I stil prefer the Soviet/Axis era because it taught me new things and the Western scenario is really very well known already, but seeing 3D modelled B17s is welcome.

That's quite accurate too. Friendlies did sometimes collide, in and out of formation!
