Wonder how long its going to be before the designs are leaked and some other country attacks us with them. I'm sure most of the crap the kept this thing from being finished was beaurocratic red tape bull**it. A company doesn't just spend that long and that much money on researching a product just to forget about it when the government says "Nah, we dont want it anymore".

Both long range bombers made obsolete by breakthroughs in SAMs. Who wants obsolete technology? Commanche is anything but if I'm not mistaken.

Please understand, this is not a flame http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Do you have some info on the Comanche that we might not? If so, please elaborate if you can. I understand about non-disclosure http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I worked with Sikorsky on an emerging technology that would have helped the helo. Sikorsky is still interested in this stuff, but of course it won't be on the Comanche anymore.

The Comanche's demise was long in coming. As a subcontractor to Sikorsky, I certainly didn't know the whole picture, but here's what I know about the helicopter that I can just blurt out (some stuff is proprietary and I can't really describe it other than it was intended for weight savings on the machine- I could be sued)

* It was designed in the early to mid '80s ('83?). It's mission was to locate, identify, and destroy Soviet tanks
* it's mission profile was changed a LOT
* it was grossly overweight, because Stealth was retro-fitted in (and was always part of the design, as far as I know). For example: internal weapons bays. That's a lot of weight a helo like the AH-64 doesn't need to carry
* it's more cost effective to just keep upgrading the Apache. If the AH-66 is going to be shot down as easily as an AH-64, what's the point in having an AH-66?
* at the rate it was going, by the time it was production-ready (2008 if I recall), it would already be almost as obsolete as the helo that it would replace.

I certainly wasn't in the driver's seat for the Comanche program. But from where I was observing, that's the Comanche story as I see it.

Yes. I have friends who still work for that company, and they found out from the newspaper that one of their biggest contracts went up in smoke when Comanche got axed. I found out on this forum, and I work for the parent company of my old firm, now! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif It's as if nobody hears the same story about it twice, and the Sikorsky guys that still go over there from time to time say nothing, of course.

Oh, I almost forgot-

The last I heard of it (late 2002), they wanted to save an additional 170 pounds on the helo. That just coincidentally happens to be what the army uses as a baseline weight for a soldier.

Fine by me! Let our enemy's spend themselvs into a debt! It worked on the comunist Russians! Ever heard of "Star Wars"? I dont mean the movie. I mean the fake program that bankrupt the Soviets and caused the collapse of the Soviet Union. Maybe Comanche is the next "Star Wars" but do we even have enemy's that can afford to bankroll a balsa flying model, let alone this thing? Get real. Also do some research on the military term called "The downward spiral". Then you will understand why the Comanche was canned. Hay. Its a cool design, and it made a few good games. But other then that, its junk.

Hello BlitzPig_DDT!!!

Yes!! It came out along with Extreme_One/Poymando's RAF campaign this past January 2004! Here is a link from Netwings:

http://www.netwings.org/library/Forgotten_Battles/Missions/index-9.html

Look it under the name "RAF Campaign Folder FULL version", very well worth the download! Over 4000 times downloaded just in Netwings in the past 2 months. My RAF Voice pack is included in it. Let me know what you think!
