Speaking of German WW2 a/c, it's amazing how shortsighted the LW was in their requests for aircraft development. How could they not foresee the need for long range fighters and heavy bombers? The development of a descent drop tank for the 109 alone could have changed the picture during the BOB campaign.

Oh, I'd be easy on GoodNight about the German women part, I'm sure his mom is a nice lady. (I don't think he's met any others yet.)

Germans had superior tactics*, not planes. I suggest you read "Men of the Luftwaffe". Planes like the Bf109, Bf110, He111, Ju88, etc. were reluctantly kept in production and continually upgraded because the Luftwaffe technical office was in shambles and flopped in every attempt to develop suitable replacements.

The head of the technical office, Ernst Udet, realized what a horible mess he had made of things, and that because of this the technological edge possessed by Germans up until 1939 or so would soon be lost. This realization came in 1941. Udet decided that the best course of action would be to shoot himself in the head, which he did.

The Germans continued to upgrade planes like the Bf109. It was always a decent fighter, but was certainly far from perfect: It was always plagued by poor high-speed handling, poor range, overheating problems, poor pilot comfort, etc.

I will admit that German beer is better than most other countries'.

*Germans had tactics superior to the Russians, and continued to have a good deal of success against them, even when German fighters were outclassed by planes like the La-7 and Yak-3. Menawhile, Germans and Americans used similar tactics.

Question, why do the British drink warm Beer???

Answer, because they have Lucas refrigerators.

I grew up with MGs and Triumpths, as well as BSA's

The second-best car I ever had was a 1970 BMW 2002, the best was a 1973 Capri. The best beer I've had lately was a Sam Adams Autumn Seasonal Brew.

I dated a few German girls, but I screwed up and got married before I met any German women.

As for their aircraft, their pilots were great(possibly due to the inspiration of their women and beer), but most of their operational types fell within the norms for European high performance fighters of the period, whith their own strengths and weaknesses. Success depends on a pilot's skills and ability to force your opponent to fight your fight, not his.

Goering's boys got a boot broke off in their a$$es. The 109 and the 190 both had major flaws that contributed to the aforementioned boot incident.

Well,I'm American but I have to admit I have a thing for German gals. The one I knew was a hot 24-year old exchange student doing some sort of graduate work at the university I'm going to. She taught introductory German(which is how I met her)along with her normal school work. We became friends but unfortunately nothing more than that. In response to what was said in some previous posts, she wasn't hairy(maybe you're thinking of the French?http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif)but she did smoke. A bit of a turn-off,but I didn't really mind. She's now back in Frankfurt. I guess I've seen the last of her.http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

US has better 37MM ammo. In fact, I loaned you a few for testing last night. One in your left wing, one in your right wing, and one in your tail. And then on our 2nd meeting, I loaned you one in your right wing. Im sorry you were able to give me a sample of German ammo, but I will take your word for it that its good.

P.S. The reason I gave him 3 shells in the first flight was not due too any lack of power of the 37MM. Its just after the first, he started to spin wildly. So I tried to even the spin out by hitting his other wing. I took too much off. It looked like his canopy was stuck, so I removed the back half of his fighter to help him slip out.

Here is the 2nd kill.

By 1943/1943 the range was more or less unimportant since the 190 and the 109 were used in the interceptor role, they didn't have to fly vast distances since the enemy was coming to them. Before that time, the 109s range was absolutely adequate because it was part of the luftwaffe/wehrmacht blitzkrieg doctrine. It certainly was not enough for BoB, but there the whole doctrine failed, not the 109. Btw, IIRC the Spitfire's range was about the same, but noone bothers 'bout that...

Regarding the comfort: both plane types were reported to be comfortable by German pilots. What kind of comfort do you mean? Don't forget that it was a warplane.

I agree with what you've said. By "poor pilot comfort", I think he's referring to the fact that 109s had cramped cockpits compared with other fighters of the day. At least that's what I've always read in interviews and such....

I'll eat my skivvies.
I saw one Firebird running 12.8 in street trim, powered by a 428 Pntiac (predecessor to the 455) but the car was gutted and suspension modified. It was obvious. 12.8 was on drag slicks.

I am here to bear witness that no American muscle car could run quidker thay 13.8 in the 1/4 without serious mods. Trust me, I lived it. I can remember when a 1969 Chevelle with a 427 and a 4 speed could be had for $800 used.

I also remember, like it was yesterday, when guys would drive those muscle cars straight from the show room to NEWENGLAND DRAGWAY and bumm out cause they could not run under 15.!

Most kids today think those cars had to be faster than todays muscle cars, not true. A new Corvette will SMOKE a 1970 454 Vette.

It's funny you should say that...

I have always considered this the German's "Maginot Line," so to speak.

But in all fairness, we have to remember that the Luftwaffe mindset was close support of the ground "Blitz" style attack. 109's were to work from forward bases. The air war with Great Britain was really never intended to happen. Germany (I guess) had expected Great Britain to turn a blind eye to the attacks in Poland, the re-occupation of the Rhineland, and the eventual attack on France.

Even the Battle of Britain was conceived so hastily that Germany didnt really have an effective plan to invade if they had won the air war. Operation Sea Lion was a joke. And in all actuality, the battle of Britain was all but won until Hitler decided to focus his attacks away from English airfields and installations to populated centers, giving the English that much needed breathing room to regroup.

A lot of people know who won the war, but they really dont know how close a victory it truly was.

Let's ponder a different chain of events. Let's say Great Britain didnt declare war on Germany. Would Hitler have turned his attention to Great Britain? His real goal was 1. Unite all German speaking peoples. He did this with reoccupation of the Rhineland, the invasion of Poland. 2. Enact revenge on France and the complete reversal of the treaty of Versailles. He did this as well. and 3. Obliterate communism in the east. (Those were his military objectives. Of course we all know about his racial cleansing objectives as well.)

Because of his overconfidence in the Luftwaffe towards bombing Great Britain into a treaty with Germany, he was forced to focus too much manpower and resources in a fight he never really intended to win. Also because of this, the invasion of Russia was stalled. This brought about another set of chain reactions. The German army reached Stalingrad in late fall. A very harsh winter set in, and the unprepared army was eventually defeated.

Again, IF the German army would have had the resources they used in the west against Britain, and say two to four more months to take Stalingrad, the war in Eastern Europe may have turned out very differently.

The eventual defeat of Japan would have cast a different picture with the United States, Great Britain, and Germany as the top three dominant world powers.

Luckily for all of us, that did not happen. Hitler's belief in that he could force Britain into capitulation was the key to his defeat.

I hypothesize that Had Hitler taken Stalingrad, either Stalin, or whomever replaced him in the eventual civil war that would have surely followed, may have surrendered the lands that Germany had taken to save the rest of the country. The "Cold war" would never have happened, at least with Russia. Germany probably would have developed an A-bomb (Eventually) and surely a lunatic like Hitler would have used it as an offensive weapon. The entire world, at least Europe, might have been destroyed in the process.

I truly love "What if" scenarios. They make you realize just how narrow victory was. A large amount of gratitude should be given to the men and women that shed their blood to save our future.

Thank goodness that Hitler's military background (A simple Corporal in the infantry) did not give him the understanding that he needed to be a good strategist. Europe might still be glowing green from radiation if he had been a little smarter...

Best beers have to be belgian, there is pretty good stuff all across northern europe, but definately not Germany. During my military service in Germany I had to drink Kilkenny. Germany would have had "more time" even sooner, in 1942 when advancing Moscow. I guess capturing Moscow would have had a bigger effect then capturing Stalingrad.

But better beer? you gotta be kidding. I tasted only one german beer that didn't suck. All the usuall stuff you can drink in a pub is just disgusting. Best beers have to be belgian, there is pretty good stuff all across northern europe, but definately not Germany. During my military service in Germany I had to drink Kilkenny. I don't know what piss tastes like, but in my mind the taste shouldn't be far from german lager.

hmm, before you talk about beer, you have to know , what means " beer " .
ever heard of the " Reinheitsgebot " ?
probably not, or you donÔ┬┤t understand it http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
in a good beer is just :

Hopfen
Gerste
Wasser
in einigen biersorten Weizen und Hefe.
nothing else

Hop, Barley, Water and in some beer sorts Wheat and Yeast ( hope to translate it right http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif )
but of course, if you prefer a chemical piss then your first choice is belgian beer .

Let me say this about Russian women--in America we were very, very misled about their attractiveness in the 1980s. I grew up in a culture that saturated us with this cold war propaganda; Russian women were supposed to be either squat, hatchet-faced trolls or hairy, muscular brutes.

The reality, from what I can see in my city's Russian immigrant community, is that Russian women are a lot more attractive than the locals here. I think part of the origin of that myth was that the only Eastern Bloc women we ever saw were the Olympic athletes, and they were all on steroids.

Of course nothing is like Belgian ale ! Leffe, Delirium Tremens, hmmm! Now THATs BEER. The latter also has some loose similiarity with the MK 108 as well, comes in small, but packs a huge punch. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Germans beers are quite good on avarage imho, but didnt find any real special ones.. DAB, Raderberger, Warnesgruner, Edelweiss are pretty good. I like the one from Austria better though, the Wieselburger. Czech ones are excellent, too, think of Staropranem or Krusovice.

But that Kilkenny, oh m8, how could you drink that for gods sake?! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Have one in my life, dont want to taste it ever again.

Well Kilkenny is okay compared to the lager you find in the usual german bar. In my school a guy who had a german girl used to bring some bear for the parties; It sucked real bad too.

The only good beer I ever had was one I had in a beer bar in Helsinki, but I don't remember the name unfortunately. I let my Finnish pal there advise me that beer and it was great. But I never tasted anything else that I liked in Germany or Austria. We even visited some breweries for my military service. Nice and all but the beer sucked, even for a free one.

And boandl... for me, the good beer is the one that tastes good http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif, not because of what's in it.

Re cars, I admit that I suffer from automotive schizophrenia. I've owned four BMW's: '68 1600; '73 Bavaria; '87 535is; '92 M5. I really learned to DRIVE (if you get my meaning) in the 1600, which could do things on real roads that no contemporaneous American car could emulate. The Bavaria was a fabulous highway car which I still regret selling. I had the the 535 for ten years and loved it - a great handling 3800 lb sedan (better than my M5 IMHO). The M5 eats up highway in relaxed and secure comfort. I do love German automobiles.

But the best a@@-kicking automotive adrenalin rush I ever owned was my '67 L71 Vette. I was stupid to have ever let it go. DaBallz is right when he says that few if any mid-60's "muscle cars could get under 14.5 ET on street tires, but it must be remembered that "street tires" in those days were 8-inch rims at best. With the right tires to handle 400-500 lb/ft of torque off the low end, however, those old cars could really accelerate. Correct tire sizing is ONE of the reasons why current cars are delivering such good 0-60 figures off the showroom floor.

Dunno about german chicks, but I can tell you, Swedish chiks aren't all that in a bag of potato chips! German beer? Crappy! Czech beer is WAY better. Planes? Well, depending on circumstances. Fw 190D was an excellent fighter, though. Cars? Now we're talking! If I had the money, my next car would be a BMW M3, but that's just a dream for now. A qualification to my earlier post and on what some others have said.

I love the German accent - had to listen to loads of cute (in my imagination at least) German grlies phone me up trying to sell me deals in my last job. Tough. I met some of them and usually turned out to be mingers. But, the best girlfriend I ever had was German. A real blonde babe, sexy accent and fit. Those that get away always get you, eh?

But I think I'm starting to get it with the planes. I flew VVS for the first time in a long time last night and arse was handed to me on a plate; stalled all the time in Yak 7 and cd get no speed and felt all the progress I thought I'd made recently really slip away. I prefer now the 109 over most for the way I prefer to fly, so will stick to that.
