I ordered BoE from JustFlight (20) and it arrived last night (should have waited for the 15 release from gameplay though http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-mad.gif )

I posted these impressions last night on SimHQ after a quick hour with it. Keep in mind, I've only played with it for that hour and this weekend I'm stuck at work so I'm unlikely to look at it much more until later next week http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif

It installs very quickly and painlessly. There is a fairly thick booklet ("Pilot's Notes") that is 50/50 English/German. It contains all the expected stuff. Have only skimmed through it, but it looks nicely produced.

I've only flown one of the single missions (P-51) so far and it's a little slow. Spent a lot of time doing some figure eight circuits while listening to my buddies elsewhere getting cut up by EA. When it looked like we might just be going to call it quits and land, a couple of EA appeared and lamely got themselves shot up (looks like they were rookies). Then a lot of jostling to line up for landing. Yawn. One grammatical/typo error in the briefing.

The RAF single mission (by Ian Boys) is a night mission. Nice bit of history in the briefing (good one Ian). However, it claims to have a special black skin for the Hurricane IIC but it is not included in the install. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif Who did the quality control? I haven't flown this mission yet so can't comment on its quality, although I would expect it to be good coming from Ian.

I've also flown the first mission of a US fighter campaign. P-47 escort of B17s. First thing I noticed was the FPS was about 10. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif That's beacuse there were tens of planes flying about the map. Next thing I noticed was that our B17s sailed over us at about 5000m while we're on the deck starting up our engines. "High little friends, sorry we're early!" By the time we had taken off and gained some altitude, the bombers were already getting mauled over the target. We finally intercepted our bombers on their return but were about 2000m below them. Only two AE were left and they were relatively quickly dispatched (looks like they were of average abilities). While we were fixing them, the bombers (or was it the P-51s?) got another beating. I felt it was a bit of a lame map as an escort mission since you had no time to catch up and do the job. There were two grammatical/typo errors in this briefing.

I'm getting the impression that the breifings have not been closely proofread or where written by someone who doesn't have english as a first language.

The skins are nice but not better than free ones.

The missions so far probably reflect real life mission, but it is a game so you would expect a bit more action. Perhaps it will get better. However, my limited impressions so far are unencouraging.

Does this mean , per chance, we here in the States may be seeing it soon too? Before March? Perhaps around the first announced release date of the 18th of Feb????

I think you've got the wrong idea. I think you are thinking of the Ace Expansion pack which is official. The add-on above is a third party add-on with some missions and skins, basically stuff you can get for free off the net.

I played a second Normandy P-47 mission and it was like the first. 25 B-17s in the air makes things rather slow. Again, they are at altitude and you start on the ground. By the time you can get up to them (you have to break away from your group as they are just tooling around at low level), the AE have already intercepted and been shot to pieces. All rather dull...

The next mission was to intercept some support aircraft. You're told to ignore the escort and any opportunity ground targets. The FPS are good with this one. Sure enough, after doing two circuits, the transports arrive but with 6 Me262s as escort! That's a bit of a problem when you're in a P-47. Some messing around there trying to intercept jet fighters that run rings around you....

The next mission was a recon of an airport. This was the first fun mission for me. A whole lot of AE intercept your flight and a general bung fight occurs. I ended up clipping the top of a low-flying building while pursuing a FW190 and ploughed into the ground http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_redface.gif

So perhaps the lame missions are just a few at the start as was suggested by a beta tested on the SimHQ forums. Still a pity the black Hurricane skin is missing and there are typos abounding (although this seems to be a fairly illiterate age so is to be expected)

==============================================
The online campaign looks very cool. You can start a co-op (or I suppose DF) mission on HL and wait for people to join. Once you start, you create a server and choose either a DF or cooperative as per normal, but now there is the added choice of a campaign.

In the normal DF and coop you can choose a BoE mission type which gives you the choice of a few missions (two choices for DF and three choices for coop; Ardennes, Normandy, Pacific). There is the usual Difficulty and Load buttons. BoE generates a frontline and a nice briefing for you (looks like the depth of the briefings varies). I suppose as long as your server is up, it will vary the frontline occasionally and as appropriate. I flew along a frontline and sure enough tanks, artillery, etc. are automatically positioned and battling it out. No need to create a map of your own!

If you choose campaign, you get a list of 7 campaigns. Once you click on Load you get a dialogue screen with a list of properties. The left column is the Name of the property, such as "Missions per day", "Campaign mode", "Strike squadron", "Escort plane", "Quantity", etc. In the right column you get the state of each property listed in the left column. They are drop down menus so, for instance for "Campaign mode" you can choose "Dead is dead" or "Immortal warriors". Lastly you can set the "Timeout" (up to 23 hours and 45 minutes) and a toggle switch for "All players landed". There is the usual Difficulty button. When you press the New button your off with a brief briefing and a frontline. Choose your aircraft and return for a fuller briefing. All the AI aircraft are there, the place is buzzing.

I give BoE a definite thumbs up for its online campaign generating system. Will there be any hand crafted missions flown online in a few months time?

I bought BoE for this online DCG and the expected P38, Bf110 campaigns that Starshoy said would be patched for free later.
