I've started the Russain campaign, first time, and we are flying these tin cans called I-16 Type 24s. After escorting the bombers we were attacked by 109s. I legged it!! Could a I-16 really face off a 109?? My flying skills are quite poor so maybe this campaign is not the best to start with??

Yes an I-16 can in the right hands mess with Me109s and even Fw190s.

I assume you are flying a DGen campaign? If so before generating your campaign, you will be given a list of start points. Giving a location, year, and aircraft type. Click on the aircraft and a small list of planes available for that part of the campaign will appear. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.

Not quite sure what a DGen campaign is, sorry. I selected Moscow from the starting point of the in game career mode.
I just found that they cant climb or turn very fast without the engine cutting and it felt more of a WW1 plane rather than a WW2 one. :s

Like the early Hurricane's and Spitfires, the I-16 is sensitive to negative G. Don't push the nose down and keep your speed high in turbulent air to avoid or minimise the engine cutouts.

At altitudes below 3 km (10 k feet) I-16 is a good match for a Bf 109E, especially the Type 24 with two 20 mm heavyhitters with large ammosupply (120 rounds per cannon).

I fly the type 28, it's a little faster. But you have to have the mods to fly her.

Could a I-16 really face off a 109??

Yes, definitely against the 109E, and even against the 109F if flown correctly. The I-16 can out-turn and out-roll both of them at any altitude, and can out-climb them below 2000m (though out-climbing AI planes might be tough since they don't overheat and fly perfectly trimmed).

Don't try chasing 109's, you will never catch them, climb instead at a speed of 210km/h. Then when they come back into the fight you will hopefully have and altitude advantage that you can trade for speed with a dive. Climb whenever you have a spare moment.

If you are attacked by them make sure you face them, put them at your 11 or 1 o'clock a little above you, and then turn into them, across and below their path; they won't be able to follow.

Don't pull too hard on the stick, the I-16 turns so well that you don't need to pull as hard as possible to out-turn a 109, especially an AI 109. Also, try to turn at speeds above 280km/h until you get more familiar with it, at low speeds it's a bit unsteady and snap-stalls. Luckily it recovers from a stall quickly and by itself.

To shoot a 109 down you will need to find one below you or one that's distracted shooting at your comrades; if you find one that is aware of you and has same altitude as you then he will extend away easily.

Also, you can turn fuel mixture to 120% up to an altitude of ~3000m, I think it gives you a tiny bit of extra boost and/or cooling. And remember to switch to supercharger stage 2 at 3000m as well.

Its now August '41 and I'm STILL flying that tin bucket. Will I get issued another plane soon??

Still? War started a month or two ago! I think you are stuck with an I-16 for quite some more time. She'll grow up on you and once you finally will switch plane type, you'll cry to get her back! :D

Is there anyway to change the game settings once a campaign has started? I'd like to turn on external views and map icons.

Well, got injured and was out of the war for a few months and when I came back to active service we got issued with different planes! Yay! Really couldn't handle those I-16s :s

When you change planes depends on what planes you selected when you first setup the career.

Depending on what you chose during your setup, you might be about to transfer off the I16 quite quickly or you may be keeping it a while.

Can you only have one campaign active at any one time? I started a US campaign with a different pliot but it only seems to allow me to fly the first mission and not move on to the next??

Check the difficulty settings for your campaign, if 'No Instant Success' is selected, you have to get a 'Mission Complete' in your current mission message before you can move on to the next. Its generally best to leave it off.

And yes, you can have multiple campaigns going on at the same time.

Good hunting.
