I haven't flown American planes much in this game, although I've flown P51s and P47s quite a bit in other games. Wondering what people like to fly. And is the P-40 any good? Doesn't have a very good reputation. What about the P-39?

P-38L, easily. Great climb rate allows it to get up high, safe from more maneuverable Axis fighters. Ability to carry two 1000lb bombs plus rockets makes it a great ground attack aircraft, and the airbrake is extremely effective at shaking fighters on your tail.

I like the mach speed and maverick delivering capabilities of the f/a-18 hornet, and for those distance fights, nothing beats a tomcat and a phoenix missile.

In FB i like the p63, p39 and that's it.

Well its a toss up between the P40 and the P38, however i love the P47(both types), but i havent got the hang of flying her yet...so if fighters i'd have to go for the P40 if fighter/bombers the P38, if bombers well i love the B17 and the B24 and then theres the B25...too difficult a choice...can i just have one of each http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

P-38.... fell in love when I was just a boy with that beauty.

My uncle took me to an airshow in St Louis and I asked the owner for a ride. He laughed and said "son, where would I put ya?"

I must have looked pretty dejected because he said "Tell ya what, how bout I put you up here for a picture" scooped me up on his shoulder had my uncle take a picture of us standing right next to the nose.

Only being 5 or 6 I never asked his name or would remember and my uncle is long since passed but that memory is just like yesterday. Lost the picture in a move but the one in my head is in color anyway. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hi,

If I have to fly one, I choose the P40. It seems far better than it's reputation but it's fun to fly if nothing else. I like to BnZ but still find the P47 to be a dog.

Maybe the thread should extend to the least favourite US plane and that clearly goes to the P63 which seems to have been overlooked in the DM department; it's the plane that spoils late war scenarios.

Cheers,
Norris

My favorit is the F/A-18 Hornet http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif I just love how it lands and takes off from a carrier. Wow.

http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/f-18.htm

Of course, there would be some game balance issues if that plane actually found its way into the FB world, but this is my fav plane nonetheless http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

In all honesty, I'm not at all that well versed in the WW2 warbird section, and in the sky they kinda all look the same to me o.O

I've flown a P 39 which was a great experience, tho I got shot down quite a lot but still fun nonetheless. Besides, Airacobra sounds cool too

http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/p39.htm

And the P-51 got me down often as well. Besides I love horses so a Mustang should be included in the collection. Well, there you have it. My favorits.

ps.: i just noticed I am not the only one loving the hornet http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif bzzz bzzz

The P-39/63 has a ton of character, but despite my sig image, I'm going to have to say the P-38L. Not the best dogfighter, but it can do the job pretty well. And it's an AWESOME ground attack aircraft. The HVARs put vehicles and parked planes in a world of hurt, and the empty trees on the wings don't lower top speed like "bazooka tubes" do.

The P-63C is pretty darned unbeatable for bomber interception, though. YOWZA.

As far as my favorite US plane in AEP, that would have to be the Thunderbolt...

But as for out of all the US planes in WWII, my favorite is the corsair.

Before the P-47D-27 got a paddle prop and fixed rollrate, the P-47D-10 was my ride. I fly the -27 90% of the time or P-40 Field mod or P-40M for my "Built in the US of A" thrills. I like the P-38, but haven't quite got the hang of it. Dosen't seem to be a very stable gun platform in the game.

Good hunting,

Have to say I'd go with Brewster too! It's a liddle biddy stunt plane with quite a nice bite - can't fly for toffee but totally aced a noob mate ina zero with the old buff... tho papier mache wings probably helped http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Oh - and I know it's OT, and with all due respect to our american colleagues, all you F series battlestar galactica jets sure do look sexy, but for some reason (and I don't think it's all patriotism) you just can't beat an English Electric Lightning with the missiles on top of the wing! Not sexy but macho as all hell! Seriously fast mover for its time too - steered like a semi-detached house tho...

Interesting. No one said the B17.

My fave has to be the P-36. I used to get a lot of fun out of Gramps old CFS2 model. Can't wait to fly a 'real' one in FB.

Favourite US prey? P-38.
There is something satisfying about putting one of those down. Particularly when flying an A6M.

Tough call, P40 for it's roll rate and aerobatic ability but it is a bit fragile, P51D for it's harmonised controls, learned how to do really low level slow rolls in the P51D and then graduated onto trickier aircraft. Love the looks of the P40 and the P51 equally!

Correct answer is: P-51D (in FB)

It's the all-around best US plane, when flown against any of the LW fighter types, including jets.

My favorite US fighter though, is the Hellcat.

Reason: Unknown (I just do).

My favorite American plane is the P-40. Just because its not the 'best' doesn't mean it can't be your favorite.

Although my favorite will always be the P47, Im getting very attached to the P39N1. I love to use all those .50 cals to cripple a plane at range then close in for the kill with the 37mm.

The P63 still escapes me though. I really can't fly that plane at all and i've been trying for some time, Its like a totally different a/c to the P39 for me and I have real problems getting that 37mm on it to hit anything despite reading all the threads that have been made on it on various forums.

Solution for flying P-63 is very simple - treat it like a new plane and get to know it (don't expect it to fly like P-39).

Yeah, I tried that. Chucked all the P39 knowledge out the window and started over. I guess I need to spend more time on it. I found the P47 easier to learn.

Yeah, I never got accustomed to some birds. The reason for geting used to P63 for me was a crappy stick I use http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-sad.gif. It changes response characteristics in matter of days. So every time I'm starting from scratch. With different feel on the stick, I'm left only with knowing what my favorite birds can and can't do.

not in any particular order:
p-38's, corsair, hellcat, p-47, p-40's(e and field mod are better. the M can be a finiky 1).
p-51's..the C model has the ability to stay on a spitfire. p-51d-20na...vicious speed on the level, turn/climb rate excellent. suck point: high g loads cause wings to go bye bye.
p-39 has its good points tho low vis in cockpit. p-63 a tad worse in pit, but its fab bombs will wreck a ship no problem.
to fly a p-63 easier without its stall tendency's goin overboard, the rudder needs to be trimmed properly especially. look for the ball on the turn/slip indicator. when centered, it handles like a jewel. if the ball is to the right of center with hands off stick, add about 3 clicks right rudder trim (vice versa if it's at the left). u should trim out ur bird...rudder, wings, then elevator. the least amount of 'air resistance' u have the faster top speed u'll get. just keep that bird at a healthy altitude to recover from any stall. dont manhandle it. gentle touch on the stick will be more effective than slammin it back in ur lap.

bombers: b-17 and b-29(ww2), b-52's and intruder's of nam.
in fb, tb-3. carries the most and heaviest bomb load in the game. slower than grandma moses crossing the nile, but if it gets to the target, target is obliterated.
he-111...more accurate bombsite, but difficult to master programing it correctly. bird of choice in making torpedo runs tho, seems the il-2-t doesnt have enough 'balls'.

What? The P40 is awesome I always thought it was overmodeled in FB. I've had no problem taking down everything from Zeros to 109s with ease. I mean its top speed is something to be desired but its manuevability, agility, and handling are amazing, not to mention armor. Take your 109 and toss you a life preserver when your in the water. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/mockface.gif

I had that problem. My old M$ Sidewinder precision pro wasn't very precise so I bought a Siatek Cyborg Evo which is precise but it needs a bigger base. The sidewinder made for interesting flying cause it was impossible to trim the planes down to fly in a straight line because of the excess movement in the stick.

P40

There's nothing better than listening to the luftwhiners cry when you take them apart. My favorite moment is watching the sparks ripple over an enemy plane when the (undermodled) .50s are sprayed all over it.

I agree and they still scream overmodeled agility or inaccurate DM!

Lufties will kick, whine, bite and scream against anything that takes them out of the air with any regularity; same goes for new or upcoming aircraft they feel threatend by.

I'd love to see a Mk XIV Spit come into FB - the whining would be intense http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Personal favorite US aircraft has to be 'Stang - sleek, agile and deadly.
