View Full Version : The Dinner Invitation Game

This started as a conversation at work today and evolved into a game. I thought I should try it with you guys too. Here it goes:

If you could invite five historical figures to your dinner table, who would you pick and why?
I’ll start:

Hector of Troy – because he was brave, noble and was willing to self-sacrifice for the safety of his people.

Afonso Henriques, the first Portuguese king – because he fought fearlessly for the ideal of a new kingdom against everyone, including his own mother and the Pope. And because he as a badass king! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Saladin – because he was a true nobleman, a man of rare wit and resilience, an exceptional leader and commander.

Cleopatra – because there was never a queen like her and there will never be.

Leonardo DaVinci – because he excelled in every field: painting, sculpting, engineering, mechanics… He was THE Master.

I can only imagine the conversation… http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

Your turn! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I'd invite:

Sir William Wallace - Because I would like to meet this patriot so I could get the real story about this Scottish hero. Also because I am of Scottish decent and both my mother and father's family fought alongside William Wallace. Alba Gu Brath!

Cardinal Armand Jean du Plessis de Richelieu - Unlike his character in Alexandre Dumas "The Three Musketeers" he actually saved France from the English while King Louis XIV and his mother fought over control the crown. I would want to know what he thought of "The Three Musketeers" by Dumas.

Gen. George Washington - So I could not only know more about the life of this great general, but what his thoughts were about him being called Father of the United States.

John Wayne - I not only liked him as an actor, but I would like to of known what his thoughts on the Vietnam War while he was making "The Green Berets" a pro-Vietnam War movie.

My late Great Uncle 1st. Lt. Paul Arnold who fought and died in WWII - To me, he not only made the ultimate sacrifice, but a true American Hero in my book.

I don't think that I said he was British considering William Wallace was born on 1272 in Ellerslie, Scotland. He was the second of three sons of Sir Malcolm Wallace (a minor laird possessing little political power and nobility) and Margaret de Crauford (the daughter of Sir Reginald de Crauford, the Sheriff of Ayr).

El Cid - because he is smart, courageous, selfless, honorable and a skilled warrior. I want to know if he is idealized.

Ghengis Khan - cause he conquered a HUGE, GINORMOUS chunk of Asia and nearly Europa.
And he managed to hold it intact in his lifetime. How'd he do all this?

Richard the Lionheart - I want to find out if he really is the man described in the legends/tales.

Sun Tzu: we need a updated version for his Art of War (even though it still kinda works - even in day to day life).

Abraham Lincoln: He sounds good on paper and looks like a nice guy in his photo. But was he idealized too?

I was gonna start with:

1: Richard Dawkins
2: Eva Green (one hot smart chick who got her emotional & philosophical **** together, and I disapprove of celebrity culture/phenomenon)

but then I noticed that it's restricted to historical figures, so:

1: General Flavius Aetius (to find out his take on fighting during the end times, and "consorting" with barbarians)
2: J.R.R. Tolkien (to learn Elven, and all the stuff that he never bothered to explain in writing)
3: Sun Tzu (obvious reasons)
4: Hassan Sabbah (founder of the Order of Assassins, to see how insane he was. Did he really believe the cr*p he told his followers?)
5: Genghis Khan (to learn how this absolutely unscrupulous and cunning conqueror thinks)

3. Reuben "Hurricane" Carter (because he is a man whos story causes me to admire him)
4. William Wilberforce (obvious reasons to any1 who has heard of him b4)

I'd have...

Heinz Guderian - to meet the great general and learn some panzer tactics from the man himself.

Scipio Africanus - one of the greatest generals and statesmen ever.

Erwin Rommel - again to meet such a legendary general would be great.

Leonardo Da Vinci - got to agree with everyone else on this guy, he's just brilliant.

Henry V of England - Came close to uniting the whole of France under English rule, managed to bring England back from the brink of bankrupcy to a powerful country.

You thought it was me?
One of these days I’m making a Sybilla of Jerusalem costume and take a picture just like that to replace the avatar! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

@Davidsanfi: historical people, please! If everyone brings up their relatives – whom the rest of us don’t know – how are we supposed to discuss them? http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Marta, why don't you draw her (in the Sybilla character) and submit it to the offical fan art thread?

Hmm... That’s actually a good idea.
I’ve been ranting about not having a scanner on the Live by the Creed thread and I’ll have to take a picture of the drawing, which will turn out like cr*p, I’m sure. But I like your suggestion! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

don't use flash when taking the pic, use abundant lighting. i photo a lot of stuff with my 5MP phone cam and the results are good... when my hand wasn't shaking, or else the pic is blurry. And a pic can always be post-treated in photoshop: color, contrast, noise reduction...

UchihaKarasu

Yeah, but why would you bring attention to yourself by pointing out the fact that you're female?

caswallawn_2k7
09-13-2009, 05:34 PM
because all women like the prove that they can do it just as well as a man.

UchihaKarasu
09-13-2009, 05:41 PM
hrm...not always.
I know of several women who masquerade as men for several reasons.

And I would probably dress up like a guy (and refer to myself as one) if I was a mass murderer XD

caswallawn_2k7
09-13-2009, 05:44 PM
see why is it ok if women dress up as men but if I want to wear a dress that's just wrong.

nope i'm referring to Cartman in the South Park episode. In the beginning, when he's mocking Wendy for talking about breast cancer, he says watch out there's killer titties on the loose.

EmperorxZurg

I am, Just make Wendy a guy and Cartman a girl, THEN there's our fight, I'll bring my blade and Marta won't stand a chance against that AND my martial artshttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

MartaVasques

Actually, Disturbed, I have a bit of training in a few martial arts. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_razz.gif I don’t have extensive knowledge on them, but the first rule of a martial artist is never to fight unless absolutely necessary.

I’m sorry, I just lost my sense of humor with some of the things going on in this forum… http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif

EmperorxZurg
09-13-2009, 07:40 PM
well not in the case of Northern Shaolin or Hung-Gar lol, which is what I learn, except Bag-Gua, that does follow that rule

MartaVasques
09-13-2009, 07:46 PM
Well, most teachers here make that the first rule. In fact, there are some martial arts, like Krav Maga, that require masters to have some kind of legal document with them, or something. That’s because they can easily kill someone in a brawl and are considered to be weapons. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

EmperorxZurg
09-13-2009, 08:23 PM
lol, I learned the ways to disarm and knock someone out with these as quick and effortlessy as possible, not to kill...yethttp://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/icon_twisted.gif
