Why has it taken me until last week to find Silent Hunter III? A couple of years ago my PC would not have fulfilled the specs anyway, so that is partly the reason .

I am in process of looking for a new game to play which is as real to life as possible. I have given up on the first Medieval Total War as I can no longer tolerate a number of poorly thought out mechanics of the game, top of list is the ridiculous way in which cavalry units just come to an instant stop after galloping full charge at an unprotected line of troops.

I nearly gave up on Silent hunter III after quickly becoming annoyed at being able to sink a large cargo ship simply by shooting all the masts and firing a few rounds into the bridge, this obviously had a hit point mechanics and had nothing to do with how one used the torpedoes or holing below waterline, again made obvious when two torpedoes hit the stern yet the ship I hit still managed to plough ahead at full speed and never sunk.

However I found this forum YAY!!! AMAZED at how active this is for such an old game, and even more amazed and impressed at the community effort and support to enhance and improve this game, thanks to those responsible!

I have just installed the GWX Gold and commander mods, and I am like WOW this is fantastic, its like a totally new game, already become addicted to this as a result, and to think I nearly deleted SH, only cost a few quid after all, but now I cant wait to play and get some serious game time in with this.

Thanks everyone, I will enjoy the first few years while I can.

I have already completed 11 missions as Andreas Ritter, spent nearly a whole day coming up with name I liked, carried out a few raids on harbours, had a narrow escape fleeing Blyth, left the scene of crime with a few fatalities, poor buggers drowned when forward crew quarters were flooded and my radio and sonar operators killed at their posts. Still, sinking a resupply ship and two destroyers was worth it.

Cant wait to get the bigger sub with more torpedoes to play with!
