I just got a new Radeon 9800 and I cannot turn off the stencil buffer. It always switches back on. Any help would be appreciated.

Why buy a Radeon 9800 and then turn off the eye candy?

The transparent shadows Stencil buffer produces is so much better looking then the crappy Polygon stippled shadows.

I can't seem to get any performance out of the 9800 with the stencil on.

definately want to check your settings. make sure your in OGl and not Direct 3d. there are specific settings in the community help forum somewhere

by the way ive also got a 9800 pro and runs great with stencil buffer and everything on excellent. im sure you can get the same performance

Then you better post your dxdiag in the Community Help forum asap because I was able to use Stencil buffer on my previous Radeon's without a problem, one of them was a 7200 64mb DDR ViVo.

Sounds like software problems if you are having performance issues with a Radeon 9800.

Post your DX Diag and let everyone know what your previous video card was. If it was nVidia then you NEED to completely remove the Detonator drivers...those cause havoc with the Catalyst ATI drivers.

Yeah, I have come to that conclusion, but Lockon runs like a bat out of hell. My previous card was a 5700 Ultra which BTW was a real disappointment and it was good I could swap it for the 9800. I am reinstalling IL2 right now and the Radeon drivers. I was pretty sure I uninstalled the Nvida drivers, but I will check. If things don't get better, I will post my dxdiag.

Thanks.

I re-installed IL2 and the problems are gone.
Should I install the new ATI drivers on the web? The drivers on the CD are older.

Mmm...stay away from 4.4 if you are running in Perfect mode. There is some sort of performance issue with 4.4 but any of the other recent ones (4.1, 4.2, 4.3) should work without problems. In general they are all pretty good...find the one that works best.

With the nVidia drivers, sometimes you need to get a specific driver cleaner to ensure that all remnants of the driver is gone. ATI has one called Catalyst remover which is on their website (helps from going from version to version).

Glad its working!

For the Perfect option, either cat4.1 or 4.2. For excellent, the cat4.4 performs well.
quote:
Originally posted by stony2275:
