View Full Version : HL closing: some thoughts

First of all HL closing down could be a hoax or hack.

That said: the date for closing down (Aug 4th) being the same as the patch release date is highly suspicious. Here is my theory: Because of the leaked patch and it's prevalence on HL, Ubisoft has decided to code the game so it won't work on 3rd party software like HL. Or more likely, they've perused legal recourse w/ hyperloby's developers to force a shutdown. Personal feelings aside you can understand why they would do this. HL has become an open forum for trading the leaked patch. To add insult to injury there are constantly servers running for patch only players.

If you were a software company; you would be just as sensitive about pirated software as Ubi. And make no mistake, the leaked patch is pirated. The software BELONGS to the developers and it's up to them and them alone to decide how it gets distributed.

This may seem like an over reaction considering the patch is a free release and HL has nothing to do w/ P2P. It's not. The software industry is terrified of a Napster scenario. And although you can get pirated stuff on Kazza and other P2P progs, the software industry hasn't been hit like the recording industry has. And they don't want to. It's only logical that software developers try to 'kill it in the crib', before it becomes a real threat instead of just a potential one.

I'm sure Ubi expected the patch to get leaked to squad mates and select friends, but from what I understand anyone can get the patch pretty much for the asking on HL. It's that kind of brazen openness and disregard that may have brought this upon us, and if I'm correct then the community has only itself to blame.

No offense but you're going to feel pretty silly tomorrow. /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

Lol! As if UBI would even care to shut down HL.

Have fun with the entertaining theories though!

You know, I've been thinking that this and other forums perhaps would make a great study in social dynamics as far as herd mentallity and escalation goes.

I imagine something of a parallel, in the whole UFO/ghost/crop circle phenomenon in a macro scale.

When given a scenario, however unlikely, people will jumble all of the circumstances to fit what they want to be "right". It's not that hard. One can come up with an explanation for anything as long as they don't need to use facts to do so.

But I digress.../i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Heh, I was thinking the exact same thing...I've gotten quite a bit of amusement watching the boards over the course of the day regarding HL...UBI might as well be the boogey man the way some here talk...LOL/i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I tend to blame someone much closer to the flight sim community who has been medelling with others' websites for quite some time... the One that shall not be named here needs to be b***h-slapped around a bit...

There is no way this post on the HL site is legit...

I'm just trying to make a point about the prevalence of leaked (stolen) software in this community. I was curious what everyone thought about the piracy issue as it proteins to FB and the gaming industry as a whole.

Would anyone be surprised if a software company did pursue legal recourse against a sight like HL for the reasons I stated? Remember what happened to the Omega drivers for Nvida?

Just trying to raise discussion about a valid issue that affects anyone who buys software. The alleged closing of HL seemed like a good time to bring it up.

HL isn't distributing anything. You can't distributed files in HL.

Prik - that is the best thing I've heard - this place goes crazy over the drop of a hat.

Must be boredom waiting for patch - and who releases a patch on monday instead of friday? - more craziness

Another conspiracy theory thread based on zero facts and 100% speculation. I still find it totally ridiculous that Ubi Soft would have some plot to eliminate Hyperlobby. I think some of you guys are really reaching and at the same time you are making the assumption that flight sim online play is a major interest of Ubi Soft. Compared to their other titles, combat flight sims are a drop in the bucket to Ubi Soft. Do the math.

I'm the last one to defend Ubi Soft, but thinking they have a big conspiracy to shut down HL makes no sense and serves no purpose.

Thanks, now I know I'm a stupid gullible conspiracy nut. (Who relies heavily on spell checker) Thanks for that. Now dose anyone have an opinion on piracy? Do you think that leaking a beta patch or downloading a leaked one is morally indistinguishable from shoplifting? (I do)

I'm saying that anyone who leaked or DL the beta patch is a thief! Come on, won't anyone flame me for that?

" Do you think that leaking a beta patch or downloading a leaked one is morally indistinguishable from shoplifting? (I do) "

Is it possible to play only with the leaked beta, without the original game from the CD? /i/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

What difference dose that make? If I smuggled a carburetor out of the dealership where I bought my car would that be ok? You can't drive a carburetor to work, so by your standard that's perfectly ok?

BTW, how come my thread didn't get locked like the others?
