16 January 1940,

Today I got a slap on my face. Two damned bombers attacked me straight away when I was preparing to deckgun a cripped C2. Apparently, the bastards didn't need to get into position to start their attacking run. Needless to say, the bombs were exploding before my watch officer had the chance to say "AHHH". The result? Serious flooding in forward quarter and forward torpedo room, hull integrity 29%, damaged FLAK/deckgun and destroyed hydrophones.

Amazingly there were no dead or wounded. but believe me, that's the last of your worries when your sub is sinking with serious flooding. Thank god, Hans is a skilled technician and we were able to repair the damage to my VIIB before we were doomed.

On the other hand, the hydrophones are KAPUT http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/disagree.gif
Now what? What is a hunter without his EYES? What is a hunter without his EARS?

I cannot return to Kiel... I still have 6 fish left and I haven't spotted a single convoy in the last weeks. I NEEEED to engage some juicy tankers... http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I feel like a cheetah who is about to die now he has lost his ability to hunt...

So have you lost both periscopes too?

If not, you could just head for a busy coastal shipping lane (e.g. the southern or northern end of the Irish Sea), and hope to spot some targets through the periscope. But of course you better be careful that aircraft don't spot you again!

If you have lost your periscopes, then I think you'd be better off retreating back to port... After a week or so your boat will hopefully be made battle-ready, whilst you plan your next hunt http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

periscopes are not damaged, but when submerged and using TC. you won't detect any ships unless you are quite close (TC droping). so in many senses, the hydros are both eyes and ears at long range.
can I head to wilhelmshaven to get it repaired and then be back on track? my home base is kiel though...

Yes, I realise that http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I was just suggesting that one possible way you could (to a limited extent) mitigate the lack of hydrophones would be to go hunting in a location where the density and frequency of enemy shipping is greater. Shipping lanes converge near to their destination ports, so you stand a better chance of making visual contact in a relatively small patrol area, albeit with a greater likelihood of encountering enemy destroyers and aircraft too.

You could even try your hand at port raiding.

Yes, you can go to any friendly port (or supply ship, if using appropriate mods) to get repairs and supplies - but unfortunately, when you dock anywhere, the game treats it as the end of the patrol. When you leave the friendly port, you effectively start a new patrol, except with no assigned patrol grid. So just go hunting wherever you want to, then head back to your home port.

May I assume I still will get the renown I deserve when I dock somewhere else? All the renown except the 100 points you get for returning to home base, right?

Yes.

I'm not sure.

The main reason for getting the 100 points is as a reward for not using the 'teleport' system to go straight home without actually sailing there (the 'Return to Base' option). So you might get the 100 pts at a different port, but I would say it's more likely that you don't.

thanks a lot.

I actually decided to continue my patrol. I got a radio message reporting a BIG convoy hundreds of kilometers away, but with broken hydrophones I could never locate it. As a last resort I headed straight away for the choke point between england and ireland hoping I would be able to spot the convoy or at least get an update about its whereabouts. Alas, it didn't happen http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

Sometimes BdU spams you with messages reporting the whereabouts of a convoy you already have reduced to a missery. Other times, like this one, you are kept hoping they give you the magic coordinates to glory http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/bigtears.gif

By the way, These seas are very dangerous even now in january 1940. This blasted destroyers can get in minutes at the "crime scene". Not to mention the aircraft. With hull integrity 29% there's no room to fool around.
