For the photos from La Ferté airshow I'll post them later after the Bourget. But this years the weather was bad and the pics are average. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

Those are some beautiful shots, especially of the Rafaele although that SuperBug coming in to land is very fine too. I hadn't quite realised what a small airframe the Rafael is, it's a beaut though, must be very nimble.

Id like the Royal Navy to buy the Rafale instead of the Lightning II.

If it has to be CTOL and not the F-35 then why not a Superbug, assuming we don't bother to navalise the Typhoon.

Folk knock the F-35 but its going to be a very capable aircraft, certainly more capable than the Rafael.

The CVAF are CTOL capable if need be, and anyway, just how certain is the STOL variant of the Lightning II? Last I heard the US govt. were threatening to pull out o fthe RollsRoyce engined variant and were trying to push the GE one on us.

The Rafale would be Cheaper. Allows the UK more political and Military freedom, We would have control over the vital Avionics and weapons systems software when we bought them, as a result of a major order there would be the probability of the UK being involved in future upgrade programs ect

How can we be certain of how capable the F - 35 will be until it is in service? Its fine watching the 'commercials' and reading the marketing mens advertsements but until its in service that could just be BS. Think about how the great the F - 111 was promised to be? The Superbug I would rank below the Rafale - why buy older technology when there are better aircraft around? Yes its good but the Rafale is better and capable of further development.

Don't know what you mean by CVAF.

There'll be a STOVL variant of the F-35 because otherwise the USMC won't have anything fixed wing that can operate off their ships.

Yes RR will get screwed on the engine.

All of the reasons you suggested for the Rafael are reasons to navalise the Typhoon. It's also a much better aircraft and if we're going to have grown up carriers why not have CTOL. BAE's doing auto-pilot stuff for landing CTOL for the USN so why not for the Tiffie? It makes more sense from a total force point of view and the RAF were going to run the airwings on the carriers anyway through some joint F-35 command, such a programme would allow for total weapons intergration throughout the Typhoon fleetn which saves lots of money and headache.

Personally, I think the F-35's going to bring a lot to the party. I'd rather have the CTOL variant as we're having grown up carriers in the future so why not and the CTOL jobbie's more capable. I don't see the Rafael being anything other than old enough to vote by 2015 when the decks that matter first take to sea.

PS Airbus are making a killing at the Paris Air Show this year.

They walked in on the 18th with about 200 commercial airliner orders for the year. In the last three days, they have had 570 orders, with another 30-60 expected before the 24th.

Thats about 100 billion dollars worth of aircraft.

Just like to say wonderful pictures EFG_beber thanks for posting!

CVAF - is the old designation for CVF the new RN carriers that have yet to be laid down or even ordered http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

There will be a STOVL variant but it wont be the one we want. The one we want had the RollsRoyce developed engine - its been a while since I read up on the programme but I though there were weight lifting porblems with the STOVL variant which hadnt yet been solved. I may be wrong.

A Rafale is a better buy than a Navalised Typhoon because it was designed as a Naval fighter from the get go. The Typhoon has some major problems if converted to a Carrier fighter. Its excellent performance will be eroded by the sturtctural strengthening required to the airframe + hook additions. Its long nose wheel would need to be re designed as it is not capable of taking the vertical forces of a deck landing. A huge problem is the placing of the canards, they block the view of the deck for the pilot on an approach to the carrier - we would need the auto pilot landing system otherwise the pilot wouldnt be able to land it. See the Rafales canard positioning to put this in context.

The F-35 may yet become a world beater. I just think caution should be applied when people say it will be a world beater. There have been so many screw ups in aviation history that it wouldnt be the first time a plane has been a disappointment. Think about all that was promised by the F-111, Carrier fighter, Strike fighter, Long Range Strike ect in the end it matured in to a good bomber but it cost many times its estimate and never met many of its original requirements.

There is an assumption that the F-22 and F-35 familiy will pick up where the F-15 and F-16 left off. I doubt this for two reasons, the F-22 was designed 1stly as a Fighter supreme with bombs added on as a secondary condiseration like the F-15 was. The F-35 however is designed as one of those do everything aircraft like the F-111 and Tornado MRCA, unlike the F-16 which was developed as a lightweight air combat fighter and developed in to a good multi role fighter bomber. The F-35 will surprise many people if it fits all its roles perfectly - I suspect it will make a better strike fighter than an air to air fighter however.

The F-35 cant supercruise iirc, it loses its Stealth aspect with underwing stores and its manuverability/Rate of climb and high altitude BVR capability is less than the Typhoon and much less than the F-22.

The F-16 was a poor mans F-15 but still a great fighter, the F-35 is a poor mans F-22 but imo will never approach the latters A2A capabilty.

Saying all that id take a CTOL F-35 over a navalised Typhoon.

I hope I'm not to curious if I ask whether do your lens have image stabilizer? What ASA settings did you use? (must be kinda hard to shoot a 400mm from hand, no?) Also seems to me your lens is in "fixed 2.8 aperture" class, am I right?

@Tigertalon
Yes the 100-400 have IS but for jet it isn't very important because the photos are take with fast shutter speed but for prop-plane it's a nice feature. It's a 4.5-5.6 lens.

Last photos of the superbug.

I have a 200mm zoom and a 400mm fixed focal length lens. I can see the difference now between using the 200mm and 400mm.
I hadn't thought it would make such a big difference. The 200mm zoom I have just doesn't get close enough.

I'll be at Flying Legends display this year and will definately be taking my 400mm tele lens this time! ...and some fast film.

Not trying to compete with you, but just thought I'd share...from an airshow in Ljungbyhed, Sweden.

Great photos!
May I ask what kind of aperture sizes and shutter speeds did you use for the helicopters and BA609?
Thanks http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Well, I have read about the lens you were using and it aperture size, but what make & model of camera were you using m8? Fantastic shots btw!

For helicopter and BA609 I use a shutter speed of 1/160 and the camera control the aperture size.

I use a canon 350D for the camera.

I was there last year, but only had a 200mm zoom and ended up with terrible pictures. They keep you a long way from the aircraft.

wow, great pics! i'm just starting my first season with a 350d and 300mm lens and learnig a lot.

i'd like to ask if you are using any exposure compensation for these shots before you adjust them? you seem to have consistenly good quality.

i fired off over 400 at the hamilton show and only got one decent pic!

thanks

I reduce the exposure (1/3) to don't burn the white. I rework the image on photoshop: level, contrast, exposure, and sharpen.

To EFG_beber

Can you please tell me what settings you usually use when taking pictures of fast aircraft in flight ?

- ASA setting
- shutter speed / diafragma settings
do you set them both at automatic , or one of them as priority , or both manual ?
- white balance
- continuous auto-focus or single shot autofocus
- what type of lens do you use

I bought a Sony DSLR A-100 digital camera a few months ago , with a 75-300 zoom lens.
I'm still learning , this is my first decent camera .
I went to La Ferte Alais this year , but find it rather difficult to take in-flight pictures .

Any advice would be very appreciated , your pictures are absolutely great ! ! !

Thanks in advance

EFG_beber

For fast aircraft in flight I generaly use 200 asa and put my camera in diafragma priority set to f/8. WB in automatic mode and auto-focus in continuous. I use a 100-400 canon but it's only for Canon.

For prop plane I put the camera in shutter priority(1/160 to 1/400) depending of the aircraft. I'll say you training, training and training to take good photos.

I higly recommand you to read this article about aviation photography.

Would you mind if I'd use some of them as background artwork for a Lock On mod I am working on?
Of course leaving all credits visible and in place.

You ask me and put credits. It's ok HuninMunin. Don't forget to prevent me when your artwork is done to see your work.

It's for you Heliopause and I will add more but the quality is not very good because it was take with an old and cheap camera when I'm starting with photography.
