Editorial Reviews:

Midwest Book Review, January, 2005
"...[a] superb masterpiece. An absolute must-have for East European literature shelves...a thoroughly compelling novel cover to cover."

L'Express
If Osama bin Laden did not exist, Vladimir Bartol would have invented him.

Customer's review:

By Mark White (Seattle, WA USA)

The young and beautiful Halima and the young adventurous ibn Tahir have just arrived at the castle of Alamut -- the impenetrable fortress of the "Old Man of the Mountain," Hasan ibn Sabbah. Unbeknownst to either of them, they are about to become part of a mad but brilliant scheme that will extend Sabbah's rule throughout Persia, and that will strike fear as far away as Europe and Asia.

ALAMUT is both an old-fashioned page-turner that follows the lives of these two innocents as they learn the arts of love and war for the mysterious Sabbah, as well as an allegory and meditation on the nature of power and authority. Sabbah, one of Islam's most revered, and reviled, historical figures, is considered by many to be the world's first political terrorist. He and his followers were responsible for political assassinations throughout the region, and the legends that grew as a result of his work extended as far north as Austria, and as far east as Mongolia.

Vladimir Bartol was a Slovene living under Mussolini when he wrote ALAMUT. Many believe the book is a rebuke of Mussolini's and Hitler's fascist movements, though there is some disagreement about that, and the book's ambigous message concerning Sabbah raises many questions about Bartol's true intentions.

Since its publication, ALAMUT has been translated into 19 languages and has achieved best-seller status in France, Germany, and Spain. A theatrical version recently opened in Salzburg, and is currently running in Slovenia. Atman Pictures of France is producing a movie version. This edition is the first-ever English translation.

My thoughts:

I think it's the best slovenian book and 1 of the best that I have read http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Ok to all who will read this topic. It's true that there are not all facts in a novel but game is related to the book in some points so that's why I recommend you to read it.

Ok -_-" few similarities:
- motto as said above Nothing...
- as you found out main characters are assassin's
- Main camp of assassin's is castle Alamut but it wont probably be shown in game
- the book is about beggining of assassins and it is showing why and how their "clan" actually began... I think it would be nice to know that

-yep motto..
-yep as i said
-alamut got pretty much nothing to do with ac since its the syrian branch ( in AC )
-as i said its not a book about facts, but about fantasy so i wouldnt believe the story of the beginning of the assassins ( nizari ) in the book

OMG it's got same known historical facts as JN006's link so if you haven't read the book pls seriusly stop with your guessing cuz meaning of this topic is not in proving me that book has got nothing to do with game. I am not offering you a book about hungry aliean or whatever so ...

moqqy
07-18-2007, 12:15 PM
maybe it has the same historical facts, maybe not. i haven't been guessing. i never wanted to "prove" that the book wasnt about the game. merely saying dont trust the "facts" of a fictional book.. you started a war over this.

nope no libraries have it, and no shops either, it'd take 1month-> if i would order it.

oh well i did a search and...

"Decisive inspiration that finally triggered his wish to write the novel came in 1927 when critic, translator and politician Josip Vidmar (1895 - 1992) draw his attention to historical events that had been described by Marco Polo."

notice marco polo here..

"He cunningly turns them into fanatics: with hashish and beautiful girls in harem he gives them an illusion of paradise, which is promised to brave martyrs."
http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

also.. "As a product of the 1930's it suffers from a lack of Nizari Ismaili primary source material, which was not available in pre-war Yugoslavia. So the writer used as his sources the legends of the assassins from Marco Polo's travels and anti-Ismaili polemical writings written by their Sunni enemies."

------
in short, i really dont believe the book got many historical things right - sure, no problem, it never claims to be historically accurate. i am just pointing it out, and you claimed it has the real facts etc about why the "clan" started etc. which i doubt based on all this. again, the book might be good but the facts arent right, and again, it doesnt matter as long as you dont take it as the truth ^^

Ok now is just question to which facts will you trust.
If you digg further:
-the word assassin is thought to be from hashish
-Hasan - the first ruler of Izmails may truelly give hashish to his chosen ones to command them...

hmm not the same facts then as A. Campbell's historic book JN linked at all then, or the facts found in any 1/2 decent historic book about them that isnt trying to make extra money by cramming is as many bad myths as the can

they wernt called hashassin .... or one of the many many variations, that name was given them after the fact because of the marco polo myth's

the ishma'ili had been around pretty much since the birth of islam (the split occured with the death of muhammed) so i think you means he's head of the nizari or about 500 years old.
and he was very deeply religeous so didnt give hash to anyone, he killed his son for drinking wine, and as both hash and wine are banned by the koran chances are hassans drug emporium is a marco polo myth that has been dispproved from virtually every angle

**edit** corrected nizari to ishma'ili in the above

Just to clear this up: Alamut is a NOVEL which means it's certainly not based on PURE facts (although the author thought at the time (1930s) that he was being (mostly) historically accurate).

it got very little to do with facts, its just not "purely facts" its "almost completely not true"

oh yep and also it is not thought that the word assassin comes from hashish.. it comes from "hashshashin", or some of the many variants of it. so yes the word assassin comes from there, but so what? -you- could digg a little further http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif see if the nizari's call themselves hashshashins or assassins.. (they dont)

edited a lil!

I'll say this once more: The book is not completely based on historical facts, but that doesn't have anything to do with the fact that it's a good book that I recommend you to read (it would probably even be boring if it would be totally historically accurate, while we're at it).

@ScytheOfGrim: Are you trying to say you only read books that are completely historically accurate? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-indifferent.gif

ScytheOfGrim
07-19-2007, 05:53 AM
OF COURSE NOT!!!

in fact, the second i hear that the book has something to do with history, i try to avoid it!!

unless its arab history, of course http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

what made you think that??

i hope it wasnt the davinci code comment( cuz that book REALLY sucks)

i dunno its a nice story shame so many idiots thought it was real .....which is the point moqqy was trying to make

moqqy
07-19-2007, 06:00 AM
indeed, and no matter how many times i or someone else repeats that "Alamut" isnt historically accurate, im sure in at least few months we'll have few people who read "alamut" after they saw the interview with jade where she said they got the inspiration from "Alamut",
and tell us that wohoo did you know the book alamut says the hashashshisgihiniaishin used drugs and had secret gardens..

ok a little bit confusing text there.. but thats what im trying to prevent a little.

andy276
07-19-2007, 06:10 AM
Nice that you want to prevent that, but I get the feeling you're trying to say that people shouldn't read it at all, which would be a shame, because it's a good novel.

moqqy
07-19-2007, 06:27 AM
hmm, lets see:P
i actually said..

"in short, i really dont believe the book got many historical things right - sure, no problem, it never claims to be historically accurate. i am just pointing it out, and you claimed it has the real facts etc about why the "clan" started etc. which i doubt based on all this. again, the book might be good but the facts arent right, and again, it doesnt matter as long as you dont take it as the truth ^^"

and..
"ok maybe a good book, but dont take the stuff from it as facts since its very much fictional and got many facts wrong :P"

so no, im not saying you shouldnt read it. from the beginning i only said that the book is fictional, and you shouldnt take the information about "hashashin" from it as facts
