View Full Version : I finally managed it

Finally was able to shoot down another plane without ailerons. An AI Zero had shot out my ailerons, I got pissed and ended up shooting him down with only rudder and elevator. I was in a F4F-4, which really does not have such great rudder response, so I think a little luck came into play.

Previously through my years playing the game, I have been able to shoot down two planes without elevator. One time in a P-47 and once in a Russian mod Hurricane. And of course shooting down planes without rudder is always easy so I have done that a lot. So now I have accomplished victories of all three types, no elevator, no ailerons and no rudder.

One time I was in a 109-G6 early and got hit by a twin cannon Hurricane that blew out all three controls at the same time!! And although I obviously was not able to get a kill like that I did manage to steer it over my frienly lines and then bail. I did it by modulating the throttle and using the torque to steer it in the right direction!!

Good shooting mortoma, thats kinda tricky flying, but man when my elevator gets it I'm bailing, because normally my plane is goin down.
I have gotten an enemy after he knocked out my engine tho, thats always satisfying to get that bass-turd when he flys in front of your crippled plane like that. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/winky.gif

One time flying the Bf-110 with no elevator I was able to go home and land and did it by careful use of the throttle. It was a very soft landing too, probably softer than most of my landings with elevator!!

And this Zero did not just fly out in front of me. I actually got him in a turn with lead pursuit. I had to manage the rudder carefully then I pulled up with my sights in front of him to get him with high deflection. I wish now I would have made a track of it. Saving one afterwards would not have had good results because I had used a lot of time acceleration like most people do on those long Pacific flights. When you use time compression tracks do not come out right, unfortunately.

you know thats one unrealistic problem of this game I do not understand; you always lose the controls on both sides of your plane elevators ect.... not just one???????!!!!!!

Good stuff.

I can`t remember when I shot down an aircraft without ailerons, but i`ve had quite a few situations where I`ve had to fly half the map using elevater trim only!

Nice job, I did the same thing in a F4U last week (no aileron, half of an elevator and rudder) I was excited to see the bastage blow up in flames for the damage he inflicted on me. I was even able to land on our carrier after I limped home. I was one lucky virtual pilot that day.

Thats because almost all WWII planes have one set of control cables (or rods in some rare cases) for the control surface. So one hit will take out both, yes. Not unrealistic.

Just could not bear to think that I'd ruin the whole campaign because I fly "Dead is dead". So naturally I am a little on the cautious side. Had it been a land runway, no doubt would have landed. I have laned without aileron on regular runways several time. On a carrier though?? No way!!

Hey!.... now theres an idea, has anybody ever bailed over a carrier and landed on it? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

Yes and if you do, your pilot goes right through the deck!!

Yesterday I got my ellies shot out two times flying a Spit V but was unable to make normal landings. I've lost my touch maybe?? I did "survive" both landing but overran the end of the runway both times and nosed over, ruining my prop. Oh well, you always seem to get a nice new plane upon the start of the next mission!!

I had my ailerons dissabled over the weekend and I got a KI46 on a headon shot, one of those armed 46s. I managed a landing on a strip(Okinawa) very wierd bu do-able, many bounces. I just thought back to my 2 channel RC days and it made it easier.
But don't worry morto, youl get the touch back it comes and goes. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

And oh ya Buzzsaw, I have tried bailing on a carrier deck and I never saw the pilot again, he just sinks right through it. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-mad.gif

He doesn't go all the way through, just down to the chow line. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

Yeah it can be done but luck helps some. One of the times I got a 109 in a Russian mod Hurri witout an elevator, I had to catch up to him on his way home and he was slow because his engine was screetching from a flak hit. I had to roll the plane constantly and when my plane was nosing up I'd give him a blast as the nose was just coming up to his level. Then roll again and do it all over. It was not easy. He would have gone down anyway had I not chased him down, but I was able to set him ablaze with hit from my wing cannons. He was not very evasive due to his damage and was AI not human pilot. So that made it a tad easier.

Landed an F4F-3 on a carrier without ailerons. That was... how do you say, "interesting". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif Simple resource management, lots of rudder use, and power.

Managed it, but wouldn't have done it in the real world. No way!

I was going to in my F4F-4 after I lost my ailerons but I my mission had been very successful and didn't want to risk it, so I bailed instead.
