View Full Version : Why can't we have "normal" panning in cockpit view?

Hi Oleg,
I am wondering why you haven't implemented a cockpit panning view that does not use pre-definded sets of view for each corner without using a mouse. Examples are LOMAC and MS FS2004 where you can use the joystick hat buttons to perform the "smooth panning" like when you use the mouse. Would it be hard to implement this? The reason I don't like the predefined cockpit views is because sometimes I want my view to be in-between two different pre-defined points. To do this currently, I have to take my hand off the joystick and use the mouse. Thanks for the time.

There's been 'solutions' to that. Mousekeys, an MS system thing may be what you want,
it lets you mouse with keys so you can assign them to the hat. Not sure diagonals
are possible, Mousekeys with W98 isn't always so good to run, see the docs on MS.

You should try "search view" in FB View Plus, or Newview [which will after being set up properly do smooth panning with the hat automatically], or bind mouse x/y movement to a hat in Joy2Key.

Then you casn always get an X45.

That's too bad. I wish Oleg and team would support such basic features natively. I admit that otherwise this is a top-notch simulation. (although some guns can use less muzzle flash).

I never clearly understood this phenomenon of v2.04. Before oh-four, you could use your mouse to look almost completely around the cockpit, and now it's very restricted, particularly for "look down" ability, which is highly necessary in planes like a Zero, which has a low panel, or a Stuka, where you need to be able to look out the floor vent.

What was the rationale behind limiting mousepanning?

Oleg,
It would be great to hear from you on this. I've tried the links offered by other pilots and tried newview and viewplus but they are complex to set up. It would be appreciated if you could make this enhancement in one of the future patches. A fine sim such as this should have such cockpit views as standard option. Thanks much.

You've tried F9?

I am sorry to say I have to agree that such a basic feature such as smooth incremental panning should have been there since original IL2. Why it is not there natively is beyond me quite frankly. Thank goodness for Newview and other 3rd party solutions.

If you have a Saitek stick then there is no need for third-party mouse emulators. The Saitek profiling software can turn your HAT into a mouse. Gives very nice, smooth 'mouse' style panning. Sensitivity is adjustable too.

This is one of the oldest questions of this sim. The answer? Ain't gonna change.

Options? TiR. You'll love it.

try joy2key : http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA016823/joytokey/jtk374en.zip
it looks easy to use compared to other solutions and you can do cool things with it like mapping keys to buttons joy axes to keys or controlling the mouse with the joy or its POV-hat

but you sure are right , with free panning you can track any target much easier than with those rasterised head movements

if you want my il2 config file for that programm i can mail it to you , i have set up simple mouse panning with my hatstick and set a button on the base of the stick in il2 itself to center view for aiming again http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Press F9 and try again! It's in between F8 and F10 on the top row of the keyboard.

I get smooth panning with my hatswitch, just like FS9. And it's been there since Il-2 ver. 1.0!!

ACtually I'm completely wrong. D'oh!

i read one of the reasons this basic/simple free panning mode is not available is that NaturalPoint, the maker of track ir, has locked them (UBI/maddox) out of this panning mode. So we are forced to buy track ir--some sort of inside deal to get us to buy it at near $100+ US.

anyone else hear this?

Philipscdrw , the thing we refer to as "free paning" is SMOOTH movement with the hatstick like when you move the mouse to look around the cockpit , got it ?

Like the other guys have said..... "Get a TrackIR."

If you want to view everthing inside your cockpit and outside all around you, it's the only way to fly. It's the same as flying in real life and the only way to go. You won't be sorry.

Umm, I just went and played Il-2 and I see exactly what you are talking about, and I come to the conclusion that I am an idiot. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/1072.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/35.gif http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/53.gif

Philipscdrw - F9 snaps back to the center view when you let go of the hatswitch...we want mouse-like panning, ie. the exact same effect w/ the mouse, except w/ the hat switch.

track ir is mucho expensive..right now, it's hard to justify...would definitely give it a shot if they had a demo unit, or if it were 1/2 price...

this free panning should be something Oleg & Co. implements...not something that we need to spend $100+ on to rectify....imo, this is just an arrangement between Ubi and NaturalPoint to get us to spend some extra cash

Hey Philipscdrw, this is really hard work isn't it!!
No, F9 TOGGLES from snap-back view to smooth mousestyle panning and visa-versa. Try it again!

No yer not. LOL Just keyboard challenged. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif Really tho, just save out some money each week instead of buying junk, forgo those other games you want. You'll soon have a Tracker IR.

Let's see, 3 copies of PF will equal one Tracker IR. Or better yet, forgo that PC upgrade. Simple when you think about it. LOL

I was thinking that I was getting smooth panning when I just get snapped from one angle to the next. D'oh! I hadn't played FB for a while when I wrote this.
