I guess you have all heard the news about the Cutty Sark in London burning on Monday morning, but I am genually surprised that it has not been posted here!

Basically the Cutty Sark, the best of two surviving Tea Clippers from the 19th Centuary was set on fire early Monday morning. The police suspect that it was an arson attack and are investigating along those lines.

The real tradegy is that the Cutty Sark was the only one of her kind left in such condition, and was the fastest as well! The ONLY clipper ship to outrun a steamship that had a head start! http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Go Sail!!

The Cutty Sark society say that the damage is about 25 million pounds, and they already had a shortfall of 13 million for the restoration work that was under way. That is one saving grace... The masts, rigging, sails, most fittings etc were all removed so the damage is limited to the hull, but all the same it is a tradegy for maritime history.

I only hope that if it was arson they get the guy(s) and lock em up for life because what was the sense in torching her???

They were talking about re-building her to sailing standards and actually taking her on a "Tea" run ~~ If they get the funds for the required works that is. I hope they do because it would be a terrible loss if she has to be scrapped.

In other news, a campaign is underway to save the only other Tea Clipper in the world, the City of Adelaide.

She is in terrible condition though, they were discussing breaking her up when the Cutty Sark was damaged!

Has it? I went back a few days and did a search and found nothing and so figured it hadn't. Not saying it hasn't, but if it has I couldn't find it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

At least it's good to hear that they will still be able to restore her. But what a shame just the shame. I hope it wasn't arson.

*******s. Well, if it was arson, let's impart some old-school Royal Navy punishment on them.

The Brits had some brutal things. Bring out the cat'o'nine. I was taught how to tie one of those actually. Great series of knots to learn.

It's bad enough that this person is an arsonist, but that he [or she] chose to torch a national monument shows this person is a scumbag who has absolutely no respect for Britain's heritage. If they catch this person, they should be locked away in the Tower of London until they are worm food.

Real shame what they've done to her, and I agree if caught they should be keelhauled if it was arson.
We have this wonderful institution over here called the national lottery, thank god, from which the profits (National Lottery Heritage Fund for instance) go to good causes.
Like restoring our nations heritage......... Not.
This might get them a few quid purely on media coverage - they might have had some already, but other real causes have lost out in the past where real waste of cash schemes have had it handed to them on a plate.
They're even using lottery money on the Olympics which I dont agree with, other countries haven't had such a fund to subsidise what is in effect one of the biggest commercial earning opportunities in the world. It should be funded by the fat cats who'll make a packet out of it anyway, this just leaves them more profit and less risk because with everything else like this over here its we'll cost it at 100 million and sign up, within weeks its gone up to 150 million and then its onwards and upwards because someone made a 'mistake' adding it all up, until its finally finished usually late and way over budget.
Classic is Wembley Stadium, the 'workers' knew it was going to be late, cant think why they knew but they all earned a packet on overtime to get it ready in the end even if it was still late. Try building anything in the South of England just now. All the skilled workers are tied up getting T5 ready at Heathrow, to ensure they a. get it finished on time and b, they stay to the bitter end the skilled guys are guaranteed 1000 a week. This is to stop them going slow and to stop them moving to new contracts before this one ends, a traditional problem over here with sub contractors nearing contract end, they jump first before the other guy gets it. Most of the companies working these contracts rely on 'subbies' to fill the ranks when they take on these large jobs.
How do I know?.... been there done it but didn't make the film...... most of my contracts ended prematurely..... last one due to 9/11 for instance as I was working on refurbing 747/777's at the time.
Ooops, political waffle overload.....Hope they bring her back to her former glory and to see her afloat heading out of the Thames estuary would be one helluva sight.

Unfortunately this is the problem with the UK at the moment and I think will only get worse, there is a yob culture that has developed in the UK and there seems to be nothing being done about it. I personally blame the relaxing of the punishment's handed out to anti social behaviour like this plus the increasing call for human rights. This would never have happened 40 years ago - the world is becoming very soft!

Getting back on topic - it's a very sad sight to see, The Cutty Sark is one of London's and the UK's national treasures. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Yep, I agree. Here in Australia, a real 'yobbo' culture has also sprung up, defacing war memorials etc. Burning the cutty sark was not just stupid & disrespectful, but shows a complete celebration of ignorance. They are stupid and proud of it.
This growing mindset is springing up all over the place. Me, I blame governments cutting education funding. If they had any real idea of the gravity of what they were doing, they would maybe have thought twice.
Whatever the reason, it stinks, and it is becomnig a world-wide problem, people enjoying their ignorance.

Flogging round the Fleet would also be an appropriate punishment, after the keelhauling- with both broadcast live on TV! http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
