Hey,it seems things have been slowing down on this forum a little bit, anything we could do to "spice things up"?

What are you guys in the mood for?

Do you have any questions?
Would you like to see the blog brought back to life?
Do you want to meet more people from the Dev. Team?

Any ideas? Any suggestions?

My responces to Pat_09's questions:

Hey,it seems things have been slowing down on this forum a little bit, anything we could do to "spice things up"? - A little dash of cinnamon is good.

What are you guys in the mood for? - I want gummy worms.

Do you have any questions? - Why do we always have to wait for things that are good?

Would you like to see the blog brought back to life? - Blog, that sounds nasty. Is it contagious?

Do you want to meet more people from the Dev. Team? - If we keeped meeting everyone on the team, then they will be slowing down on working on the game, better to crack the whip and see if they can finish faster.

Any ideas? Any suggestions? Lets have an adventure story where you start with a sentence and others will have to add a sentence.

(Dont take anything i say seriously, I am bored and just had to say something silly.)

Thanks for asking, Pat.
I would love to hear more from the developers.
The blog didn't really work well, so no blog.
Questions:
What is the resolution of Revelation?
When will there be a demo available (approximately)?

JustBrett, I don't think Ubisoft should be the ones worried http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif I can see the headlines now:
"HALFLIFE 2 OUTSOLD BY ADVENTURE GAME"
What? It could happen http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Alahmnat, it is obvious a clever Puzzle that Pat_09 has set for us, allow me to decode:
"August???http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif"
-August is the 8th month of the year
"8???http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif"
-There are a total of six question marks - obviously placeholders for say, a letter and 5 numbers?
"800x600"
Everything can be read to say what you want it to say http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

As for me Pat, I've generally been avoiding the forums, because they make September seem that much longer away, and I don't want to spoil myself, so I won't ask you any of my questions (not that you would have answered them anyway, hehe). Knowing that you guys are hard at work is enough for me. Though, I did like the blog - maybe a place where you can update with the major milestones of the project, i.e. "finished filming one of the major scenes" or "finished the game, released to manufacturers", and some developer insight into them or something along those lines, I dunno.

Hey Pat. Thanks for asking.

I guess its a little slow right now because everyone's excited by Path of the Shell!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but I'm sure when August comes around (especially if theres a demo, ooh very exciting!) we'll all be back in Revelation mode.

Anyway what I want to see is more information about the actors - like their names and photos, especially Sirrus and Catherine, we've only seen drawings of them. (And the back of Sirrus' head!)

Oh I was wondering... by the time the game comes out will we know the names and screenshots of all the ages, as in Myst III. I think it'd be more mysterious if rather than releasing shots and placing them under headings of their age names, you just released them, didn't name the ages at all, and placed them all together.

That way the game won't feel so "friendly" when we first play it.

LOL -- whenever that's been done, EMS, we've been able to place shots with names pretty easily.

I like the blog, Pat! More blog! Maybe something where every couple of weeks somebody writes a few paragraphs about their piece of the pie. Like the team diaries (http://www.elderscrolls.com/index.php?url=/codex/team_redirect.htm&bg=03) that the Morrowind folks did.

Since you have to avoid spoilers, any technical stuff you can tell us about making the game would be fun.

Things may also be a little slow as it's summer and lots of people are spending more time outside and on vacations. I've noticed the Uru forums are a little slow right now even with the upcoming release of TPotS.

There's also a lot of grassroot efforts going into marketing TPotS, but I'm sure that once it's released, the same amount of energy will be directed at marketing Revelation.

But it won't be long before things are jumping again. I am chomping at the bit, awaiting any tidbit of news about Revelation, but I also know you guys must be extremely busy at this point.

Doesn't it just sound so much more mysterious?

Anyway, yeah, it's summer, so there's more outdoor activity.
"Outdoors?! Are you crazy?! There's people out there!!"

I'd like to hear more about pizza. We need more pizza talk. How much do you like pizza? I'm thinking about pizza right now. Can you tell?
Pat, it's just fun to read your posts no matter what they're about. I like it when you pull somebody's chain. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif Because you can't reveal too much, you're very limited in what you can talk about or have to resort to very generalized answers, like "August". LOL

I'd like to hear from more people on the team about anything in general. You don't always have to be "on". Just yak. Over at the Greeters forum I've got a special title under my name because I blab so much. Mostly about nothing. But I've made some fun posts & have a fun time doing them.

Like Beta & Prologue Uru, Myst is all about friends & making more friends. "Collect 'em all!"

Hi Pat,

http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Nice to see you're still with us. I hadn't seen too much from you since E3, I was afraid that maybe it's all been too much for you and you'd thrown up your hands and made a run for it. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I would be interested in ideas/puzzles that just couldn't seem to be made to fit in with the game/story as it was evolving. And if there were any that were really near and dear to you that you really hated to have to drop. It's just a curiosity thing - I really like finding out how things are done. What the process is to make it all work and come together into the final product.

And I'm with Coronagold, it's nice to "meet" anyone who's a kindred Myst fan - and especially those of you who maybe weren't, before you got involved with the Revelation project, but are now solid converts to the "Myst faithful".

Thanks, Cierdwyn

I understand summer and POTS and everything so don't worry, I totally know what that's about.

I was just curious what else we could talk about together that we haven't talked about yet, and VOILA! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif Tons of suggestions from you guys!!!

I'll see what I can do from here.

<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>similar to JustBrett's suggestion... any bits of the story that didn't make the final cut? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>

Oh yeah, tons. Tons. And some parts that some of us (Mary!) we're really not about to part with...

Also, when you try to undertstand characters, you really have to flesh them out fully and to their complete timeline even if you end up using but a fraction of that.

The "creature" is the biggest story element we dropped... I kind of miss it sometimes cause it was something VERY cool. It would have had a major impact on the Myst universe and it could have opened up a lot of doors for new stories & adventures! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

But, ultimately, I felt it was too big and too intrusive on the family story that we're trying to tell in Revelation. I think it would have become maybe too confusing and/or certainly too HUGE to develop on time...

...Especially since our original release date was MARCH 2004! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif (it would have been a nightmare to make that deadline... The game would REALLY have suffered...)

I guess I already talked about the original dreamforge design, right? The complete, finsihed design doc they had worked a year on putting together and which we basically threw away to make Revelation? They had some interesting ideas to say the least... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif

Oh and we had a house in a tree too. Not a TREE-HOUSE, a House in a tree...(well, that's what GEORGE said anyways... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif)

Did you know Mary was originally hired to spend 6 weeks in MTL at the beginning of the project and then work on and off for 3 or 4 months (at a distance) during the middle and at the end of the project?!

And she ended up staying 2 years (pretty much full time...! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/59.gif http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/88.gif)

And thank god she did!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/11.gif

As for milestones, yeah, that might be a good idea. Keep a thread open to our current milestone, let you guys know what is happening on the floor. Right now, we finished (well, NEARLY) all of W1. The sound-hotspots were put in too, so it's really a good taste of what the finished product will feel like! I can't wait!!! http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I liked the blog. It was very good for what it was for...coverage of the team at E3. E3's over, and it served its purpose very well. Long live the blog. You can always have more blogs for other special events if you want to. I'd enjoy them.

But a board is where we ( I ) get more yakky.

Hey Pat

Sorry to sound like a complete noob, but what is W1? You said you have almost completed W1, but I have no idea what that is http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/blink.gif

I really like the idea of hearing about your development milestones. It would help to keep the excitement levels up if we continue to hear what breakthroughs you've been making, as long as they are not too spoilerish http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

I find that if I check out all the spoilers prior to release, I get a medium level of interest and excitement over a long period of time, but when the final thing hits its just a series of "Oh its this bit" and "Oh cool I'm finally in this place" with a few surprises in between, rather than an all out amazing expedition of discovery and wonderment http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

Given the context of development, my guess would be that W1 stands for "World 1", and is a spoiler-free way of saying "the first Age is almost fully compiled" http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I know I'm not Pat, but...

World Assembly, as Cyan calls it, generally takes place at the very end of projects like these, after everything is modeled, textured, and rendered. So, whatever number of Ages Revelation has, they're all already completely rendered or nearly so; the project is now focused on compiling all of those rendered images and animations into a final product with logic, state changes, puzzles, etc., and the first world is almost through that stage of completion http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif.

I can tell you from experience that after story, rendering probably takes the longest out of any part of a project of this nature, simply because of the bottlenecks that it creates. Everything else, however, is fairly quick by comparison.

Those of you who attended Mysterium in 2002 may remember the Writing Project demo we had. The slides and animation in that demo took roughly a week or more to render (the trailer is another story entirely http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif), but we had it put together and working in roughly 36 hours.

Once again, you are right. Rendering is INDEED the longest part and it IS done at the end.

As far as assembling the rest of the game, for Revelation, we did things a bit differently since all the AI, cinematics & hotspots have been there for nearly a year now. The game has been playable from beginning to end since last christmas! But it is just NOW beginning to look nice (and to have all the video panels integrated). It's allowed us to playtest quite a bit of stuff. There is still loads of debug of course... but it's getting better by the minute... http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/35.gif

I'm not sure why but this makes me SO desperate to play the game, oh I can't wait I can't wait I can't wait!

If it was playable before all the renders were complete does this mean that you did quick, low quality, preview renders of each node and used them instead? Because I can imagine that that would be a very clever way to develop a game like this. Make sure everything is going to work before spending ages rendering a shot that ends up getting dumped or changed because it doesn't work in the game.

The game has been playable since Christmas, and I'm waiting for September 9th because....?
Pat was...
a) watching TV
b) taking a nap
c) eating a big sandwich
d) spending time with the boy (Bart)

So it's all a matter of rendering time. Why not borrow Pixar for a month? Just tell them that the Incredibles can wait. They've been plugging it for about 3 years now. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/heart.gif

And that's why even though it was "playable", it was FAR from done...

I had figured that that was a large portion of the process at the moment. I have downloaded 2 copies of a picture that looks across the little canyon towards what looks like a caldera in the distance. I had thought that the first one was quite beautiful, but the second one is so much richer in color and detail - it's been living as my desktop for about a month now ... I just love looking at it so much. Can hardly wait to see the rest of the game. Nice job guys. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/images/smiley/16x16_smiley-happy.gif

You no likey Riven!? Strange!

Hey Pat I was wondering I was (you can't answer this cuz it'd be a major spoiler, and also its probably not gonna happen) but...

Yeesha in Uru said something about Relto was a gift for her parents.
Gee wouldn't it be cool if in Myst IV Yeesha wrote Relto and you get to go there, and its all pre-rendered and cool. http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

(OK out of ALL the suggestions I've made this is probably the least likely to even be considered. But I think it sounds cool anyway.)

How could you not like the concept of the entire game structure, yet still love the game?

Well I personally love the structure of Riven, but as someone said, I don't want that again - I'd rather a new structure.

Pat - will Revelation have the Myst/Exile structure of a nexus age which links to all the other ages which you can do in any order and once you do them all you get a final age?

Or is there a new structure? The latter i suppose since you'd assume the Sirrus/Achenar worlds would not be "on par" with the other ages.

Revelation will have a structure that is: a) in some ways similar b) someways different from the previous games. But, seeing there is more than 1 Age, I'll let you draw your own conclusions. No, he locks them up very carefully, and then leaves instructions lying around for the benefit of passing strangers. Like closing a bank vault and then scratching the combination on a locker down at the bus terminal. Come to think of it, Master Kadish did the same thing in Uru. Must be a D'ni thing. Thanks for your MYSTIC reply, Pat, as always.

Can I ask another question?
I just played Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, which was as you know, developed by Ubi Soft Montreal.

Sooo I assume this is a different team, but some things bothered me, particularly the save system - in which every once in a while it asked if you want to save. In between, you couldn't save at all.

So I hope you're not taking this page and you'll allow us to save and load whenever we want, wherever we want, as many times as we want (taking a page from realMyst, Riven or Exile.)

So whats the decision on that. Surely its not a secret?

Actually, they had to do that for technical reasons (memory limitations prevent you from saving anywhere on PS2), but that is not the case on PC. So NO, we are not going down that route with Revelation.

This is because cross-platforming a game tends to bias its design toward the worst platform, causing the featureset on more capable platforms to be really ugly.

I always liked the way you'd find characters things lying around, almost as if they had just left the room a moment ago. Particularly when I found plates or bowls of food. I always wondered what kind of food it was...

Yet on the other hand food isn't handled very realistically. I mean Atrus was trapped in D'ni for how long? Since you hear about "this forgotten island long ago" (Sirrus) you would assume its been some time since he ate. Or went to the toilet.
(Hehe aussie joke: pretty wierd considering its Dunny - old spelling)

Also what does Saavedro eat whilst trapped in Exile? Those red Squee berries? (I may be wrong, maybe there was food around somewhere).

I've always thought they didn't show more of D'ni because there was no need to, so why render a whole bunch more images for a pointless world? Notice how many doors there were out of the room that Atrus was in: that was just his study, of course. It never showed us that the doors were locked, you just couldn't get close enough to tell (not so sure about realMYST).

Ahh OK GrayWolf. Thats a bit gross, but I'll have a look!

Whered you get the 4 years / couple of months from, Alahmat?

By what I understand, Atrus DIDN'T have any other linking books to outside D'ni (he didnt get any of Gehn's - although I guess he could have) and he was trapped in there for 30 years.
(BOOK OF ATRUS)

Well, he wasn't trapped in K'veer for 30 years because he got to Myst and from there wrote countless Ages.

But K'veer was the only place he could access in D'ni itself (or the rest of the D'ni ages for that matter)
Until several months after Riven when he got a team from his newest age Averone to come and break down one of the doors in his K'veer room and then he was free to explore all of the ages of D'ni.
(BOOK OF D'NI)

I garbled my comment http://ubbxforums.ubi.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

You are correct, EMS, in your time estimates. I was commenting on how long he had been trapped in that room on K'veer following his sons' betrayal, which was a couple of months, during which time the only Book I'm aware of him possessing was the Book of Riven. I then messed up in my statement that he was trapped there for another 4 years without qualifying that he then had access to his other Books and Ages again, he just didn't make it out of that room for another 4 years after the events of Myst and Riven.

I'd like to ask a question of the Dev team, a serious one if I may:
What effect, if any, did the collapse of Uru Live have on the Revelation development?

I know the two games are being developed by two totally separate teams. But they are both under the same publisher. Was there ever any threat to the Myst IV project?
Did Ubi at one stage ever just say "that's it, we've had it with the whole Myst franchise!"?
I've heard that Uru Live's collapse affected some Ubi employees - does this extend to the dev team, or are the Montreal team sufficiently removed from the main Ubi Soft publishers?
