Yes I'm being a traitor to the crown

Think about it this way, in the '60's the U.S. ultimate cool was Steve McQueen and the UK ultimate cool was Sean Connery. Connery trumped McQueen by a mile for pure frozen cool. Downhill from there. '70'S: Eastwood, '80's: Eastwood, '90's: Willis, now: (heh heh) Tracie Thoms---she who played the woman who drove the car in Tarentino's DEATH PROOF ("Why do I pack a gun? Because if I carry a knife I'll run into some muthaf----r packing a gun!"). So, yeah, with only whimpenfuhrers like Huge Grunt, Rupert Everett, and Colin Firth, you're scuppered. Albeit, for pure testosterone count, Ray Stevenson and Kevin McKidd in ROME beat every American actor in creation.

Although I also beleive that McQueen was about as cool as it gets, he did not die in a car crash of any sort

You may be thinking of the stunt he (literally) pulled to get out of a contract, so he could be in "The magnificent seven": he purposefully crashed his car

However, McQueen died a very horrible death from mesothelioma, a kind of lung cancer

Connery wears a kilt, not a skirt, however. "league of of Extraordinary gentlemen" was a cinematic milestone compared to other duds Connery has made, like "Outland" and "Robin and Marion". Oh yes, I know my cinema! McQueen made some less than succesful films, but he was a guy who tried to show up Yul Brynner. Yul Brynner! Brynner was a dozen times cooler than Connery

I can't see how Sean Connery trumps McQueen in coolness...McQueen's real life persona was about as large as any of his characters.

Steve McQueen was a student of Bruce Lee, who trained him is his own distict martial art- Jeet Kune Do, although McQueen never tested higher than Black belt (3rd) for fear of legal action should he be in a fistfight. He was a pro race driver, who considered quitting acting to race full time. He owned and flew his own Stearman. He was a US Marine, a tanker. He did stunt work on a movie as a stuntman, for kicks, when he was a hot name as an actor in the '60s. He is in Beastie Boys song, and a Clutch song, and many other songs.

Steve McQueen was a pallbearer for Bruce Lee for goshsakes. The Clash wrote a song with the title of one of McQueen's most memorable movies...

That's a pretty ****ing cool guy. I like Connery ("Big Tam") just fine. But McQueen was so much cooler than Connery. Let's be serious here.

Aimail, don't judge America by TV and movies. Those are SO warped it's criminal.

And cool? Yep, loads of cool people. A lot of them from elsewhere, btw. Travel is cool.

But don't forget this is also the country where John Lennon was assassinated.
And his crime was being too cool when you get right down to it.
So we do have loads of very uncool a-holes here too.
And a lot of them came from elsewhere too. Travel ain't enough to widen some minds.

It's not raining where you are by any chance?

Unfortunately, all the greats are ex post facto for the UK. The current crop are a bunch of dweebs but for Stevenson and McKidd---but they aren't cool. They are GREAT actors, but it's cool we are talking about here. Underused and very good is Pierce Brosnan. Michael Caine was always cool as a frozen icepick, true, but he never had the ultra macho of a Connery or an Eastwood.

Well...some were. But US film then was good then because the stars seemed like real people. Not like the cookie-cutter Hollywood pretty-boy with the requisite 'bad-boy' attitude and legal problems. I just can't identify with current Hollywood stars at all. The only big name star today I can think of that seems like a real person when he's on screen is Viggo Mortensen

McQueen once threatened to break Howard Hughes' nose. Can you imagine Ben Affleck having the nuts to do that?

But the films suffered from their times and the standards of the times in some cases. Look at the "Green Berets". Actually a good story, which suffered from it's location for shooting, and the fact that many of the actors were too old, and they didn't feel like paying a lot of Asian extras, so they used Anglos

Now compare that to "Platoon". It's bugglegum compared to grit

Don't forget the lead in Band of Brothers was played by a Limey. Maybe no-one stateside cool enough for the part?

McQueen, sure, who else could get away with that wardrobe in the Great Escape? - but I always had Cary Grant (Limey again) in mind when thinking cool.

Johnny Depp makes a good living out of ripping off another cool Limey, too.

The joke is that the basis of American "cool"---"grace under pressure"---was a concept borrowed from the English aristocracy by admiring Yank Anglophiles in the 19th century---harr harr harr. So much for "American" cool. There was no cooler beast than the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo, bar none. He made Dirty Harry look like a raving girly boy hysteric. Take Beatty at Jutland, two huge battlecruisers blow up in his line and he says to his flag captain: "There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today, Chatfield." Now, that is COOL. Listen to the tapes of British bomber crews over Europe during WWII, effing amazing. Speaking as a Yank, we'd be yelling our heads off in a crisis, as is our way, but the British were eerily quiet. Amazing.

For it to be a proper soap opera one or more of the following needs to happen:

1. A Clinton needs to marry their nemesis (i.e one of the Bushes).

2. Someone needs to be in a coma.

3. Someone needs to find out that their father is really someone surprising. E.g. Bill finds out his father was really JFK or something.

4. Someone you though was dead isn't.

Those are the soap opera rules!

This is why Star Wars is a space opera - Han Solo is put into a coma, Luke finds out that his father is someone surprising (although precluding option 1) and we find in Episode III that Annekin did not die...

A common discussion in the teacher's lounge:

Brit: You Yanks *******ized our language.
Yank: No, we just made it popular.

There you go, hard evidence it's all about the marketing. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Ahem

That's "Dumb and Dumber" and "I Love Lucy".

We also gave you "Playboy". Stop complaining! You gave us chilly women and taciturn demeanors...as well as showing us the fair willingness of English males to don a house dress and adopt a falsetto at the drop of any well worn hat...which doesn't strike one as very "cool", now does it? http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-very-happy.gif

I don't know about "cooler" but us Canadians are certainly colder...

I am suddenly filled with love for my American comrades.

I want to clarify a minor issue:
Anti-Americanism is just a reflex to being outnumbered ten to one and having people constantly saying that "we may as well try to sell what we can of the country as the Americans will invade within the next hundred years" over and over again.

We may have differences in government, culture etc. But we always respect you folks when you come to visit (unless you snub us and don't visit...)

Vive le BNA! Long live the Commonwealth!

Then again, I say the same about cricket.

1. Jazz, SNORE!
2. The Italians invented porno!
3. Damn, I must concede this point. Wait! Infrared was discovered by a British/German astronomer, which the remote uses!
4. I don't believe you!
5. Wotsits baby
6. Damn, I concede.
7. Fortunately for me, your claim is impossible to prove

I saw a film the other week: "The Assassination of Richard Nixon".

It is based on a true story: Samuel Byck, disillusioned, divorced, office supplies salesman, decides to assassinate Richard Nixon. By flying a plane into the White House, in 1973. (He didn't succeed.) But, but, he's got a TV with a remote, but it's not a wireless remote! It has a cable! But he still picks it up and points it at the screen when he's changing channel - some habits must be hard to break. Of course if the remote is wired, not infrared, it makes absolutely no difference where you point the thing!

ploughman
05-21-2007, 10:28 AM
The first remote I ever used was aucoustic. Once side effect of this was if you rattled some lose change the TV would switch channel. I guess that was about 1977.
