Its amazing how peoples perception of these aircraft changed..

i suppose back then with the war over everyone wanted to forget the past and move on, and this included the scrapping of vast amounts of war material that we now find fascinating and to be treasured.

Society i suppose was still in the age were science was glorfied and progress was good. new was better.

The picture was so big that all I saw at first were long buildings and dirt ground. I thought it was a concentration camp.....then I saw the planes....how true I was.

I have some pictures (negatives) my father took when he was a lad. It was an aircraft graveyard containing hundereds of Sabres and other things.

I don't have the negatives handy, or I'd scan them.

I know it seems incredible to our generation but after the war this stuff was just junk. Most people wanted to get on with their lives and put it all behind them. There was an airfield near my house where the RAF would take off to fight the battle of Britain. I've read books about the pilots who flew there and their contribution was incredible. When I was a kid the airfield was bulldozed to the ground. Not one building remains. All that is left is one of the blast pens where the spitfires would refuel and a small section of taxiway. It is an incredible shame for our generation that this heritage was lost but having not been through the war I don't think we can understand the feelings that drove this.

Imagine if there were thousands of 109's left, or any other WW2 fighters. The fact that so many of these planes were scrapped after the war is what makes them so precious today.

How many 57' Chevies have been recycled?

Would Led Zepplin's popularity have lasted so long if Bonham hadn't passed away?

I doubt the planes are gone due to bad memories. Recycling metals became very important after 45' for rebuilding.

I think is something wrong with your internet explorer setings. The pics are showing ok here.

Just imagine how much those things would cost today. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif

But then again, there were thousands of obsolet aircraft that nobody needed anyway. You can't just ignore the amount of aluminium in those things.
