from the readme

F4F, FM-2 Wildcat Variants
Gear can only be operated manually; you have to manually assign keys for it in the Controls section.

There are other features that require you assign a keystroke. The readme covers them all.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

You can`t blame `em for asking the question though. How many people, Americans included, had no idea that the F4F had a manual gear? I thought only the Russian planes had manual in the beginning...

If there`s one thing Oleg has done that NO Western sim has ever done, is EDUCATE people just a little bit about some aircraft in reality.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

It is possible to find helpful people to answer your questions here http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-wink.gif

Start the game, click on 'Controls' and assign a key (or joystick button) to manual gear. Two buttons, actually, as you will need one to raise it and one to lower it.

Keep in mind that you will need to tap this key around 40 times to fully raise/lower the gear.

Cheers,<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

welcome Striker....

This sim has alot of optional controls and is open to the user as to how to best configure or map them depending on your peripheral equipment such as HOTAS or basic joystick and keyboard.

A nice basic user guide of maybe 2 or 3 pages would have been a good idea but it was not to be.

FAQ's like manual landing gear operation or basic gunsite / bombsite activation and use as well as a description of the 'controls' interface and the importance of it would have been a good idea to have printed and included with the disc sets but instead these fundamnetal questions were all folded into the extensive readme file.

You can feel free to ask questions on these forums but you can always expect one ot two impatient replies along with the help.

Have fun with your new sim.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Striker-

the above advise is correct. The F4Fs used a system not unlike a bicycle sprocket and chain manipulated by a handcrank

The crank is easily spotted in the cockpit on the right side near the seat<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

if you look down in the cockpit (view) F1 you can see it turn, and listen carefully you'll hear it too. I think it took 13 turns up and 13 turns down.

I don't think anyone should be shouting RTFM at people with problems.
It is easily one of the most inaccessible games today.
They should have put "must have access to online forums" on the back of the box!<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Welll...not really, I think

It's not as if these aircraft did not exist in real life. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Shocking I know, but when I was 15 or 16, I used to go to the library and take out books. Plus, the info about the F4F gear really did come with your game discs http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif I try to answer as many new players' questions as possible, but I do also know that these planes were around for the last 70 years; they are hardly a mystery even for those with no internet acces-IF-that person does the merest investigation

Players sometimes have a hard time divorcing the "I'm playing a game" mindset and the "this only ever existed in the game" mindset. This is a classic example: the raise/lower gear control doesn't work on a couple specific planes...the sim must be broken! Never a thought to the actual use of the system, the answer must be the software is 'broken'. Oh well. Like I say, I help new players a lot, but I do wish more players would read not just the game manuals, the readmes, and the other info with the sim, but I wish they had more of an interest in WWII aviation than "this is cool". Maybe the reason I don't see more of that here is that the players who DO those things simply don't have to ask online http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

Hmm, we should not forget that many pirated games come without any manual... so in a way you can contribute a bit to a non-pirating enviroment making life harder for the stealers. Pointing the person with a problem kindly towards a manual that he has (which is of course on his original DVD if he has one) seems the right solution. However, never heard about PF being pirated, so the smiley I posted above should be more 'winky' instead of angry. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

However, one shold know exactly when to shout RTFM, as issues like above are explained kindly in the manual, while opening early japanese gunsight isn't AFAIK.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

The trouble is that the manual is in the main game folder, and not everyone thinks to look for it there.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

One of the intended purposes of this forum is to help newcomers with any questions they may have, and not blast them with ill-considered screams of "RTFM". It's very rude and thoughtless.

If you can't help but resort to such crude and base reactions, then it's prefered that you "STFU". http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/51.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

rgr, fixed. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-happy.gif Would be nice however if these rules applied to all the posters since some of them step over the line waaaaaaaayyyyy farther than I did. I imagine it's kinda hard to enforce it without a software/hardware limiting.<div class="ev_tpc_signature">

As it says in that post, enforcement commences later in the month. It's clear not a lot of people are preparing early, so I'm giving it some publicity by throwing comments at obvious violations as I see them. I agree there are much more blatant offenders about, spend 15 minutes checking file sizes on avatars some time and see how many are under 15KB http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif<div class="ev_tpc_signature">
