In a word, rear projection.

Why put up with three puny monitors side by side, with the necessary "breaks" in the view caused by the the monitor frames? How about setting up three projectors in rear projection mode, with the screen edges touching and thus forming a SEAMLESS image?

Moreover, with suitably large screens (at least 4 feet wide), you could set them up to form three sides of a cube, with your head placed exactly in the center. Running the game at the widest FOV of 90 degrees, you'd get true-to-life image scale, with a 270-degree wide wrap-around! And even more, because of the viewpoint being located at precisely the correct location for the gnomonic projection IL-2 uses, the view would also be completely distortionless!

But of course the cost of high resolution projectors rules out all but the more well-heeled among us. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

Having three monitors still allows you to position them the way you consider most appropriate (subjective)

You can not have three large screens in a cube like position, the 90? between the central and each of the side monitors will give you a false view; you would need a spherical screen.

Apart from that, the monitors you are talking about exist for more than 3 years.

Nevertheless, the next breakthrough will be HMDs (Head Mounted Displays) and this will be a great leap forward; Today, they are still too expensive for normal people...
