Ok, pretty new to the IL2 world, and I'm starting to get really in to it. I know, I know...I'm late... ok question...

When I start a campaign or any mission really I can choose which squadron I want to be in. How do I know which squadrons are historically accurate for the mission/campaign I have chosen?

Thanks for the help!

This is a radical idea...but you could look it up in a book http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/16x16_smiley-surprised.gif

here's a website for company from which I have gotten many nice reference books

Here's some planesets that are historical as far as I could 'research' it:
For German fighter South (298 mission) with II./JG52 squadron, planeset is hitorical as possible, with just one small edit that you can select Bf-109G-14 also instead of Bf-109G-10 on Balaton map (last subcampaign)

Hungarian fighter, squadron VO.101 "Puma" (91 mission) planeset historical as possible

If you don't like German planes here's VVS fighter campaign (5. GvIAP primary eqipped with LaGG/LA series), however I can not say that this planeset is 100% accurate but you can be pretty sure that it is at least very close

I have previously finished this exact campaign with P-39 (primary) equipped 16 GvIAP. You shouldn't have much troubles to find planeset for this unit. Search for Pokryshkin's info since he served in it.(among other units)
VVS units are somewhat hard to track since they aren't unfamiliar with changing squadron designations, the same unit flying on two aircraft types (in the beggining usually on MiG-3 AND I-16/153) and lack of info etc.

I have researched all planesets with info from books and fom net.
I would also appreciate possible corrections to these planesets very much if someone has more detailed/correct info. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I have more finished campaigns but these (if you decide to give 'em a go) should keep you gaming for a long time. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/59.gif

Thanks for the info. I did look online and it's very hard to find info on Russian air squadrons. I'll keep looking.

Thanks for the link. For example which squadrons were at Lvov in '41?
