I'm the first to admit, I play a very pedestrian type of game in SH4. I stick to deep water, and steer clear of most warships. I don't try to infiltrate guarded harbors, and abhor any water shallower than the darkest blues. If I come back with more than 005 hull damage I consider it a bad patrol.

Having said that, I'm on a very productive career and was given the Balao after the last patrol. The actual Balao, so I figure I got the first because I'm doing pretty good. I figured my run of easy assignments was over, with such a valuable and capable new boat.

My first assignment was just outside Singapore. Shallow water. I don't like it.

Got through OK. Hid in the deepest holes I could find and managed to sink two merchants over the 72 hrs.

But here's the cool thing: I nailed both merchants with perfect below-the-keel shots and split them in half. They ended up pointing bow and stern up straight at the sky with the broken halves resting on the shallow bottom. Like two goal posts. One of the weirdest things I've seen in the game.

Hey, way to go Lou. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/clap.gif That's puttin' the ol' pepper on it. http://forums.ubi.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif Goal posts huh? That'd make for some nice SS. Hope you took some. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/25.gif

Singy can be dangerous, but fun. I seldom attack single merchants, but once I sunk about a dozen outside the entry to Singy. Looks like a small town with all the bows and sterns sticking out of the water. Finally a TF came through and ran into all the bulks sticking out, some got stuck, some pushed them over and even a few DD's blew up. I used it to my advantage.

It was night, sadly I don't think the game sees these sticking out as they seemed to have no effect on radar or visuals as I was on the surface hiding behind the bulks sticking out, but they're real enough when hit by the enemy.

Sunk ships in shallows will give me a green light on sonar, not realistic as sonar would have to be active if you can't hear.

I've had some really weird sinkings lately. One merchant took one torpedo near the bow, and I guess was taking on lots of water. It was not on fire, and I thought it was getting away. But I noticed the stern slowing start to lift as it was sinking bow first.

It kept going, fast and it's momentum drove the bow down until half the ship was, again, sticking straight up out of the water. But it was deep water this time. It started to slide straight down and there as a big underwater fireball, which pushed the ship back up. This cycled about 3 times, 3 different underwater explosions lifting it up, followed by settling a little deeper each time.

Kind of stuff I really like about this game, and I obviously have only scratched the surface.

That can often happen, several will bob up and down. It's often funny, I've hit capital ships in the bow, they don't sink, but slowly the bow will go under, this forces the stern to come up and the props come out of the water, still spinning, but the ship can't go and I can wait until escorts clear and go finish the job.

Yeah, I've seen ships do crazy things when hit also:

Strange skin on that ship, last time I had one that color my video card went bad.

Have seen them sink like that, funny.

Looks like you blew the masts right off that merchant.

I wish I had more time to devote to playing this game, there seems to be so many bizarre things to do and experience. The way I play, I've found I need at least 3 straight free hours to even think about firing it up. Anything less and I start rushing things, using too much TC and generally making poor decisions.

On the other hand, I've blocked out large amounts of time on weekends, and find I can quickly burn out on it. I'm still looking for a good balance.

I'm really enjoying my current career, it is the longest career I have had, at 10 patrols. I've built up, through promotions and acquisitions, a set of officers with a great compliment of abilities. Having so many different abilities from the crew kind of pushes the game to a higher level, in my opinion.

@LouLewis1967:
I couldn't believe the explosion when I hit this ship with 1 torp. The bow did a complete turn-around and then spun quickly several times before coming to rest in the position shown in the pic. http://forums.ubi.com/images/smilies/blink.gif
